The 1970s: Married First, Fell in Love Later
Chapter 415 - 414: Daya Arrives at the Military Base
That evening, Liu Jian Country had just gotten home after a long day at work when his mother called him into a room.
Inside, his father was sitting and smoking. He Yun stood to the side with her head hanging, while Jinbao stood on the other side, his eyes darting around as he looked at him.
Liu Jian Country glanced around and asked, "What’s going on?"
Mrs. Liu said angrily, "What’s going on? You knew that Daya recovered from her illness, didn’t you? Why did you hide it from us?"
Liu Jian Country glanced at He Yun and saw that her eyes were downcast.
Mrs. Liu snapped, "Don’t you look at your wife! The two of you are really something else, keeping us completely in the dark. If Xiao Wei hadn’t run into Daya in Beijing City, we still wouldn’t know a thing."
Mr. Liu, still smoking, looked at Liu Jian Country and said, "Oldest son, Daya has recovered?"
Liu Jian Country nodded. "Yes. I only found out at my mother-in-law’s funeral. But Daya won’t acknowledge us, so we didn’t tell you and Mom. We were afraid it would upset you."
Mrs. Liu rolled her eyes. "Hmph."
Mr. Liu said, "So what are your plans now? Daya is a member of the Liu Family, after all. Your younger brother said she’s successful now. We’re not looking to freeload off her, but Jinbao is already fifteen. In a few more years, it’ll be time for him to get married. With our family’s current situation, we can’t afford it. She’s Jinbao’s older sister; she should take care of it, shouldn’t she?"
Liu Jian Country’s expression changed. "Dad, we already signed the papers and gave Daya away. Isn’t it a bit much to ask her to pay for Jinbao’s wedding now?"
Mrs. Liu cut in, "What’s wrong with it? Jinbao is her biological brother, isn’t he? And you two are her biological parents. If she’s unfilial, we’ll sue her. Let’s see how she’ll face the world then!"
Liu Jian Country frowned.
"Daya is in Beijing City, we—"
Mrs. Liu sneered. "So what if it’s Beijing City? You think we can’t go there? We’re going to Beijing City tomorrow. I’d like to see if she still thinks she’s not part of the Liu Family."
Of course, Daya had no idea the entire Liu Family was about to descend on Beijing City.
Meanwhile, Xue Yue went home and told them what had happened.
Mr. He said angrily, "The Liu Family is truly shameless. How dare they go looking for you."
He Lang said in a low voice, "They know Daya is better now. Their motive is simple: they want money. Honey, is that paper they signed still around?"
Xue Yue thought for a moment. "It should be. I’ll look for it in a bit."
He Lang nodded. "Find it first. Knowing the Liu Family, they probably won’t let this go so easily."
Mr. He looked at He Lang. "Are you saying the Liu Family will come to Beijing City to find Daya?"
"It’s very likely. We all know what kind of people they are; we’ve been dealing with them for years. Is there anything that family wouldn’t do for money?"
Xue Yue worried for Daya. "Then what should we do?"
He Lang thought for a moment before saying, "Have Daya go to the military base to find Gu Kai Zhi. We’ll hold off the Liu Family."
"The Liu Family are all scoundrels. What can we do against them?"
He Lang snorted. "Then we’ll let them see whose turf Beijing City is. If they dare to cause trouble, I’ll make sure that getting here was easy, but leaving will be hard."
It had been many years since He Lang had to resort to his old methods. Besides, times had changed. If it came down to a contest of who could be more of a scoundrel, He Lang was no amateur. Otherwise, how would he have earned his bad reputation for over twenty years?
"You want me to go to the base and find Kai Zhi?"
Daya looked at He Lang, confused for a moment.
He Lang nodded. "The Liu Family is probably coming for you. Since you’re married to Gu Kai Zhi anyway, just go stay at the base for a few days. I’ll let you know when they’re gone."
Daya asked in surprise, "Is it my uncle, he—"
He Lang sighed. "It’s probably more than just him. You can’t handle them. After you leave, I’ll deal with them."
"Uncle," Daya said, very worried.
"It’s fine. Go on."
That very day, He Lang arranged for Daya to go to the military base to find Gu Kai Zhi.
A day later, Daya arrived at Gu Kai Zhi’s military base.
She was carrying her luggage and standing at the gate when a guard stopped her.
"Hello, I’m looking for Gu Kai Zhi."
The guard looked at her and asked, "What is your relationship to Gu Kai Zhi?"
Daya replied, "I’m Gu Kai Zhi’s wife. My name is An Xin."
Hearing this, the guard stared at Daya for a few moments, then went to call Gu Kai Zhi.
When Gu Kai Zhi received the call from the gate guard, he was stunned for a second. He asked again, "Say that one more time. Who’s here?"
"Your wife. She says her name is An Xin."
Only then was Gu Kai Zhi certain that his wife had really come. He dropped the phone and bolted toward the gate.
Wen Kai watched, confused, as a delighted and frantic Gu Kai Zhi rushed off. He called out, "Gu Kai Zhi, where are you going?"
But Gu Kai Zhi was already too far away to hear.
From a distance, Gu Kai Zhi saw the person he had been longing for.
"Honey."
Daya smiled as she watched Gu Kai Zhi run toward her.
Gu Kai Zhi ran to Daya’s side, took the luggage from her hands, and looked at her. "Honey, what are you doing here all of a sudden?"
Gu Kai Zhi had only been back from Beijing City for two days; he really hadn’t expected Daya to show up so suddenly.
Daya pursed her lips. "Let’s talk after we get inside."
Gu Kai Zhi nodded. "Okay."
The guard saw Gu Kai Zhi and saluted him. "Deputy Battalion Commander Gu."
Gu Kai Zhi put down the luggage and returned the salute. Seeing the smile on the guard’s lips, he took the opportunity to introduce her. "My wife, An Xin."
The guard called out to An Xin, "Hello, ma’am."
Daya froze for a second, then hurriedly said, "Hello, hello."
Gu Kai Zhi picked up the luggage and said to Daya, "Let’s go."
Wen Kai caught up just in time to see Gu Kai Zhi walking over with a beautiful young woman.
Wen Kai knew Gu Kai Zhi had gotten married. He had never seen this woman before, so he figured she must be Gu Kai Zhi’s new wife.
Wen Kai ran over and said loudly to Daya, "Hi, ma’am! Welcome to the base! I’m Wen Kai, one of Gu Kai Zhi’s best friends."
Daya nodded at him. "Hello, I’m An Xin."
Wen Kai smiled and said, "Ma’am, did you come from Beijing City?"
"Yes, I came to see him."
Seeing Wen Kai talking endlessly with his wife, Gu Kai Zhi kicked him. "Get lost, get lost. You got nothing better to do? We have things to do."
Wen Kai shot him a look, then said to Daya, "Ma’am, how do you put up with his temper? See? He’s even like this with his own buddies."
Hearing this, Gu Kai Zhi went to kick him again, but Wen Kai had already taken off. He looked back and said to Daya, "Bye, ma’am!"
"Bye."
Daya watched the man run off into the distance, then said to Gu Kai Zhi, "Why are you so mean to him? Aren’t you two good friends?"
Gu Kai Zhi laughed. "It’s because we’re good friends that I know what he’s like. That guy loves to take a mile if you give him an inch, and he talks way too much. If I didn’t shoo him away, he’d be pestering us all day."
Daya raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"Come on, let’s go to my dorm."
