The Alpha's Mark
Chapter 91: You Are Truly Beautiful, My Love!
The air inside the bedchamber was soft and thin, the cool night breeze rustling the curtains as the moonlight poured over the edge of the bed.
Valex sat heavily at the edge of the large bed, his broad shoulders slightly hunched under the weight of an unyielding exhaustion. The dark circles beneath his eyes seemed to deepen in the quiet light.
Odesse closed the heavy oak door behind them, the latch clicking into place with a definitive finality. She turned, her pale gray gown swaying softly around her ankles as she crossed the stone floor. Walking toward the bed with a warm, measured smile, she sat beside him, the mattress shifting under her weight.
She leaned in closer, her voice a soft, grounding anchor in the quiet room. "So, my king. Why don’t you tell me the things that give you so much bother?"
Valex turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto hers with a desperate, searching intensity. "I want solid proof that you are my wife, Odesse. Not vow rings, not wedding ceremonies, or the testimonials of the staff." He reached out, his large hands resting flat against his knees to steady his trembling fingers. "I want something that will absolutely connect the dots in my mind and clear this fog completely."
Odesse did not flinch at his intensity. Instead, her smile widened with a deep, nostalgic enthusiasm. She reached out, covering his large hands with her own.
"The first day we met was during the mating ceremony," she said softly, her eyes shining with the memory. "I was a simple servant, my king. I had met you entirely by accident"
Valex watched her lips move, a faint, involuntary smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as the genuine warmth in her voice began to soothe the jagged edges of his mind.
"And then," Odesse whispered, tilting her head to the side. She reached up with her right hand, sweeping her long silver strands away from her shoulder to expose the smooth skin of her neck. Gently tracing a small, intricate pattern near her collarbone, she said, "Then this mark appeared."
Valex’s breath hitched. He raised his hand slowly, his calloused fingers hovering for a fraction of a second before gently brushing against the skin of her neck. The contact sent a sudden, electric vibration straight through Odesse’s frame, her breath catching in her throat.
"You say you got this mark for me," Valex murmured, his thumb lightly tracing the contours of the skin. He looked up, his brow furrowing. "How am I sure it belongs to me?"
"Doesn’t it remind you of something?" Odesse asked, her voice a gentle prompt.
Valex dropped his hand, shaking his head in frustration. "My brain cannot quite comprehend right now. It feels blocked."
Without a word, Odesse reached forward. She took his right hand, gently turning his wrist over while pulling back the heavy fabric of his dark sleeve. There, etched permanently into the skin of his inner wrist, was a sharp, identical tattoo matching the exact linework of the mark on her neck.
Valex froze. He stared down at his own wrist, his eyes widening in complete shock. "We have the same mark."
"You had it tattooed the very day after we got married, my king," Odesse said, her voice dropping to a tender whisper.
Valex stared at the twin designs, his thumb moving automatically to rub the ink on his skin in absolute amazement. The logical barriers Azure had built inside his mind cracked wide open. He looked up at Odesse, whose face was illuminated by the soft moonlight filtering through the window.
"So... you truly are my wife," he whispered.
"Yes, I am, my king," she replied softly.
A single, heavy tear escaped Valex’s eye, tracking slowly down his rough cheek. The rigid, defensive posture he had maintained for a month finally collapsed. "Where did you go then?" he asked, his voice thick with a raw, unlocked grief. "Why did you leave? Who is Azure? She... she keeps telling me she is my wife, but Odesse, I remember nothing of her. I feel absolutely nothing when she touches me."
Odesse moved forward seamlessly, wrapping her arms around his massive shoulders and pulling him into a slow, deep embrace.
"I tried to gaslight myself," Valex muttered against her shoulder, his hands gripping the fabric of her gown as if he were drowning. "I tried to force myself to believe I was in love with her because it was what she told me. But I kept having dreams of you. The moment I saw you at the masquerade ball, I knew my mind wasn’t mistaking."
Odesse held him tight, her fingers gently smoothing the tense muscles of his back. "It is alright, my king," she caressed his hair softly. "You will remember everything one day. Just give it time. This time, I am going nowhere. Azure will not be able to separate us again."
Valex pulled back slightly, his green eyes flashing with a sudden, dark intensity. "What did she do to separate us?"
Odesse’s gaze lowered, a heavy, profound sadness settling over her features. The warmth in her expression vanished, replaced by the grim reality of their past. "I lost someone very dear to me, My King, Including our unborn child."
Valex’s chest heaved, his eyes opening wide in horror. "An unborn child?"
Odesse looked up, her silver eyes steady and clear despite the pain behind them. "Yes, my king. Our unborn child. She took our baby from us."
Valex stood up slowly, the sudden shock jolting him out of her embrace. He paced a short step away, his hands clenching into fists as he struggled to process the gravity of her words. He turned back to face her, his voice tight. "Do you have proof of this?"
Odesse looked up at him from the bed, her posture remaining entirely dignified. "I know you need a reason to believe me, especially since you have not fully recovered the memory of what we shared. But trust me, my king... I would have no reason to lie to you just to gain your trust or force you to love me. I do not need to steal what is already mine."
Valex stared at her, the sheer honesty in her voice cutting through his lingering doubts. The sharp tension in his facial features began to release, his shoulders dropping as the heavy skepticism left his body. Slowly, he walked back to the bed and sat down beside her once more.
Odesse shifted closer, her hands rising to cup his face gently. She studied his features in the dim light—the heavy bags beneath his droopy eyes, the dark circles, his parched lips, and the rough, neglected skin of his face.
A small, maternal smile touched her lips. "You need rest, my king. Real, good rest. You do not look well at all."
Valex leaned into the warmth of her palms, his eyelids growing heavy under her touch. "Your brain deserves sleep," Odesse whispered softly. "A king gets tired too. We should not expect you to carry the weight of the entire world all at once."
Valex looked up at her, his resistance completely melted. "Shall I rest on your lap, then?"
"Yes," Odesse smiled brightly, her heart swelling with tenderness. "Yes, of course, my king."
She released his face and adjusted her position on the mattress, leaning back against the headboard. Valex lowered his massive upper body slowly, comfortably settling his head onto her lap. He looked up at her as she began to run her fingers through his dark hair, gently shifting the stray strands away from his forehead.
"This feels really good," Valex muttered, his breathing finally turning slow and rhythmic. "When you touch me... I feel safe."
"Well, that is because we are each other’s safe haven, my king," Odesse replied smoothly, looking down at him with an unyielding affection. "If not me, who else?"
Valex closed his eyes, leaning into the steady movement of her fingers. "I truly want to remember the moments we shared in the past. The love, the way we used to speak to each other."
"This right here was exactly how you always came to me when you were exhausted," Odesse murmured, her voice a soothing melody in the quiet room. "You always knew you couldn’t carry every problem alone on your shoulders, so you trusted me. You told me everything that bothered you."
Valex remained silent for a long moment, absorbing the peace that filled the chamber. Then, his eyes opened slightly. "Azure told me she was the one who broke my curse. But now that I am actually thinking clearly... I truly do not believe it was her."
Odesse’s eyes hardened for a brief second, a flash of cold disdain crossing her face. "It wasn’t Azure. That lying thief simply took the glory. It was our love that broke it, my king. It was hard, and it nearly broke us, but we did it together."
Valex sat up right, his movements sudden as he turned to face her completely. He bent his head forward, his voice thick with emotion. "I really want to remember who you are, Odesse. Who you were to me. That is all I want."
Odesse reached out, her fingers gently lifting his face by his chin. She brought her face closer to his, her lips inches from his own. "If you truly want to remember," she whispered, her boldness making him melt entirely, "then why don’t we get even closer tonight?"
The absolute certainty in her gaze overrode the last of his hesitation. Valex wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. When their lips collided, the remaining confusion of the past month dissolved into the heat of the room.
Odesse held onto his back as Valex kept his hands firm and steady against her hips, guiding her onto his lap. The atmosphere in the room turned thick, charged with an authentic, passionate energy that had been suppressed for far too long. Moving with a deliberate, slow grace, Odesse pushed him back flat against the mattress. She reached for the ties of her nightwear, letting the fabric slip away to leave her bare in the silver light.
Valex stared up at her, his eyes thoroughly mesmerized. "You are truly beautiful, my love," he murmured.
Odesse’s pale cheeks flushed a deep, brilliant crimson. She leaned forward, her fingers trembling slightly but remaining precise as she unbuttoned his shirt, exposing his chest to the cool air of the room. Valex reached up, his hands catching her hips and pulling her down until she rested against his chest. He cleared the stray silver hairs from her face, staring deeply into her eyes.
Odesse blinked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Why do I still act so shy when this is not our first time?" she thought to herself, her face burning hotter.
Valex let out a soft, low chuckle. "Are you shy?"
"No, of course not," she said quickly, looking away in embarrassment.
"I can hear your heart beating so fast," Valex murmured, a genuine, warm amusement breaking through his exhaustion. He turned her gently onto the mattress, shifting his body above hers. "It is marvelous. You are entirely marvelous, my love."
He lowers his head, slowly kissing her neck, her breasts, and her stomach. Odesse could feel the heat radiating from her body as she clutches the bed tightly, thinking, "We haven’t even started yet, and I already feel like I’m about to melt." The heat radiating between them felt absolute, a physical manifestation of the bond Azure had tried so desperately to destroy. Valex rose slightly, discarding the rest of his clothing before returning to her, his lips locking with hers once more.
The night passes with silent moans, gasps, and passionate love shared between them. Within the locked confines of the royal bedchamber, the lingering traces of the dark spell were completely washed away, witnessed only by the brilliant moonlight that continued to stream through the window, bathing the true King and Queen in its silver protection.
