Chapter 228: The Storm’s Boundaries

Daniel frowned, his arms crossed over his chest. "Hold on—how’s that possible? How can a storm decide to hit just some places and leave others dry?"

Paula looked at him, patient but focused, as she pulled the map closer and pointed to the faint blue rings drawn over the parchment. "It’s not the storm choosing, Daniel. It’s the currents. The winds, pressure shifts, and terrain here in Nirvana don’t follow normal patterns. Our land is... complicated."

"Complicated?" he echoed, clearly unimpressed.

"Yes," she said, leaning over the map. "See this here?" She traced a finger over the faint ripples that surrounded the heart of Nirvana, then drew a small circle around the pack’s border. "The storm front moves like a living thing, but it’s bound by something — energy, elevation, maybe even wards, we are not sure. We’ve studied the winds for years, and they twist differently here. Most times, when a storm forms this far north, it sweeps the entire region. But this one..."

She paused, tapping the map lightly. "It’s forming right on the edge of the basin. It’s heavy and slow, and it’s reacting to something in the ground. It’ll pour hard on the central regions — our region — and fade before it reaches the eastern and northern ridges. That’s why Ronan and his group won’t feel a drop."

Lysander nodded thoughtfully, but Daniel still didn’t look convinced. "You’re telling me the rain knows where to stop?"

Paula smiled faintly. "Not exactly. It’s more like the rain can’t pass certain points. It’s as if the land pushes back. We’ve seen this happen before — storms that build walls around themselves. The air above those boundaries gets thicker, heavier. It’s as if the storm hits something it can’t cross."

Mary tilted her head. "You’re losing me," she admitted bluntly. "All these lines and currents... what does that even mean? Why would the storm not cross?"

Paula nodded, then straightened and brushed the dust from her hands. "Alright," she said, "let me put it simply." She glanced around the circle, and even Caspian leaned forward a bit, the faintest smile tugging at his lips.

"Imagine the storm like a bucket of water. When you pour it on flat ground, the water spreads evenly. But if you pour it on ground that’s uneven—say, full of ridges and walls—it’ll stop where the walls rise. It’ll fill the valleys, but it won’t climb up." She gestured toward the terrain sketched faintly on the parchment. "That’s what’s happening here. Nirvana’s landscape isn’t uniform. Some places hold magic deeper in the ground—old, rooted energy. The air bends around it. The storm hits that magic like water hitting a wall. So, instead of spreading across all of Nirvana, it’ll flood certain pockets."

Mary blinked at her, then nodded slowly. "Ah... so the land itself decides where the storm goes."

"In a way, yes," Paula said. "But it’s more about reaction than choice. The storm reacts to the land’s energy, not the other way around."

Caspian grunted approvingly. "Now that makes sense. We’ve seen strange weather patterns before—clouds that break over the shrine but never touch the forest edges."

"Exactly," Paula said. "Same thing here. The readings say this storm will concentrate on our basin. Heavy rainfall that will occur within three days, maybe some thunder, but the outer ridges will stay dry."

Orion, who had been quietly listening, finally nodded. "As long as it doesn’t affect Ronan and the others, that’s what matters."

Paula inclined her head in agreement.

Satisfied, Orion straightened, his expression firm again. "Alright then. You all know what to do. Keep your people moving, and make sure no one takes this lightly."

The meeting began to dissolve naturally after that. Caspian stretched his back with a faint groan, muttering something about roofs that never stayed fixed. Daniel clapped Paula on the shoulder before heading off, and Mary rolled up the map, her forge-bound hands steady as always. Lysander was already flipping through his notes, muttering about the herb stores that needed checking before the rain began. Madam Tyler, serene as always, simply said, "The Goddess blesses those who prepare," before turning to leave.

As the group dispersed, Orion lingered. The courtyard was quiet now except for the wind brushing through the trees and the snow that fell on them.

A storm was coming but the snow was relentless in Nirvana, as always.

But even with the news of the storm he just received, his mind wandered to Sophia.

Her wondered if she was awake now and if she had seen or even eaten the porridge he left for her. He wondered what her reaction was when she read the notes.

Maybe she’d want to hit him or maybe she’d laugh. Orion sighed, he wanted to go to her right at this moment. Yo just forget about the impending storm and embrace her, wallowing in her scent and that calmness that always settled over him whenever she was around.

But the pack came first. Always. There were preparations to oversee, orders to give, and people depending on him. Still, he reasoned, maybe as he continued with work, he could use an opportunity to sneak and see her.

And maybe even sneak in a kiss. With that thought in mind, he began to move with renewed vigor.

At the same time, deep within the shrine...

The air was cool and thick with the scent of wet stone. The opening just above the shrine cast light on it, illuminating the altar.

The markings glimmered faintly, the runes breathing like living veins beneath her palm.

She didn’t fully understand how she knew what to do—only that her body did. Her fingers traced the ancient script with a kind of reverent familiarity, as though they had done it a thousand times before.

Each motion awakened a whisper.

The altar responded.

The stone beneath her skin pulsed softly with light as she drew her hand down the center, following a line of symbols carved deep into the slab.
