The Art of Chaotic Divinity
Chapter 1541: "Great Devil" Ling Feng
Sensing the oppressive aura radiating from Ling Feng, the two devilkin dropped to their knees, trembling as they bowed low, not daring to lift their heads.
Among the devilkin, hierarchy was absolute. Someone like Ling Feng, whose appearance was almost identical to a human's, could only be a high-ranking devilkin of exceptionally noble blood in their eyes.
"Hmph!"
Seeing that the two had been completely fooled, Ling Feng gradually withdrew part of his aura and spoke slowly, "You two, what are your names?"
"My lord, my name is Horf. This is my attendant, Nader."
The young devilkin, who still looked rather immature, gazed at Ling Feng with shining eyes, unable to hide his excitement. "May I ask where you come from, my lord? You don't seem to be a noble of our Chloe City."
"Chloe City?"
Ling Feng pursed his lips as a thought crossed his mind. There really is a settlement of devilkin here.
"I am not a devilkin of this plane. I wandered here by accident through a distorted space."
Ling Feng kept a straight face as he spoke, making it sound effortless and convincing.
"So you are a high-ranking devilkin from the outside world? No wonder we have never seen someone as noble as you in Chloe City!"
Horf's face lit up with excitement. "My lord, you must come and meet our city lord. It would be the greatest honor for Chloe City!"
"Mm."
Ling Feng gave a small nod. "That works. I also have some matters I wish to ask your city lord about."
"Yes!"
Horf's excitement grew, and he immediately turned to his attendant. "Nader, lead the way!"
The club-wielding devilkin sprang forward at once, running ahead. Horf bowed respectfully to Ling Feng and said, "Please follow me, my lord!"
They continued on their way. The land ahead remained barren. Aside from the occasional demonic beast that blocked their path, there were hardly any other devilkin in sight.
Ling Feng could not help but ask, "Horf, why are there so few devilkin in this place?"
Horf let out a sigh before answering slowly, "My lord, you may not know this, but this plane is actually a space where the Devil Domain and the human realm overlap. In ancient times, we were driven out of the human realm by those hateful Immortals. Most of our kind returned to the Devil Domain, but some, like the devilkin of Chloe City, were forced into this distorted space between the two worlds. We belong to neither side."
Ling Feng pondered for a moment before speaking, "The devilkin are known for their vitality. If they fell into this space, they should have quickly dominated it and multiplied in great numbers."
"That would have been the case at first. But have you seen the twelve Demonic Stars in the sky?"
Horf pointed upward at the strange stars overhead as he spoke.
Ling Feng glanced up, curious. "What do they have to do with it?"
"The Demonic Stars are the source of the devilkin's power. Although this place lies between two realms, it still has those stars, making it a suitable place for our kind to live. However, devilkin are naturally warlike, and the Demonic Stars only amplify the ferocity within our blood. In order to seize the position of overlord, the devilkin who fell into this place began slaughtering each other."
He paused briefly before continuing.
"That conflict lasted for centuries. In the end, only those weaker devilkin who were not suited for battle remained."
"Later, for reasons unknown, the Demonic Stars grew dim, and our power began to fade. After countless years, those of us who barely survived have continued to decline. With the constant harassment from demonic beasts, only a small number of devilkin remain, all gathered in Chloe City. That is why you rarely see any others outside the city."
"Thanks to the blessing of the Great Demon God, my lord arrived in time and saved us!"
Horf looked at Ling Feng with deep reverence, his voice filled with emotion. "My lord, I believe you must be the savior of Chloe City, the one who will lead us back to the Devil Domain!"
"..."
Ling Feng almost laughed. He had no interest in becoming the savior of the devilkin.
Still, it was fortunate that these devilkin were declining rather than evolving. This space was connected to the Xuanling Continent. If these creatures had been growing stronger instead, and found a way into the human realm, it would have sparked another war between humans and devils.
After a long journey, Ling Feng finally saw a city rising in the distance. It was far from grand. A simple wall of piled stone, only a few zhang high, surrounded it, barely enough to keep out the watchful demonic beasts.
At a glance, the level of civilization here resembled that of primitive tribes. Most devilkin lived in caves, while only those with higher bloodlines were allowed to stay in crude stone chambers.
"My lord, this is Chloe City. I will take you to meet the city lord. She will surely be overjoyed to see you!"
Under Horf's lead, Ling Feng quickly entered the city. Most of the guards at the gates looked like grotesque monsters. Only deeper inside the city did he occasionally see devilkin who somewhat resembled humans, dressed in rough cloth that barely covered their bodies.
Some were no bigger than squirrels, while others were towering giants who carried massive stone pillars. Yet compared to the fierce giants Ling Feng had imagined, these ones looked almost simple and honest.
Many devilkin greeted Horf as he returned. When they noticed the stern figure following behind him, curiosity spread among them.
"Horf, who is that? He looks so serious!"
"He looks like those humans from the stories. But why would a human be here?"
"Idiots!"
Horf stepped in front of Ling Feng and shouted, "You ignorant fools, don't point at my lord. He is a noble Great Devil from the true Devil Domain!"
"From the Devil Domain?"
"You mean he is a Great Devil? Horf, don't make things up!"
"Hahaha, Horf has always loved bragging!"
The surrounding devilkin burst into laughter, and some even whistled.
"You... you all!"
Horf's face flushed red with anger. "Who is making things up? You will see soon enough. My lord will become our savior!"
He turned back to Ling Feng with a look of pure admiration. "My lord, could you release a bit of your aura? Let these fools witness what the power of a Great Devil truly is!"
Ling Feng felt a trace of curiosity. These devilkin might look strange, but they were nothing like the vicious creatures described in ancient records.
Were the Devils from Beyond truly all man-eating monsters, as humans believed?
He suddenly thought of the devilkin queen, Ke Weili. Back then, he had agreed to cooperate with her only as a temporary measure. Deep down, he had always suspected she had ulterior motives and was merely using him. If he ever released her, the consequences might spiral out of control.
But now, his thoughts began to shift.
Perhaps he needed to reconsider that devilkin queen. Perhaps he should not judge Ke Weili based on old prejudices.
She might turn out to be a worthy ally.
