Chapter 29: Authority

Alexander had come across Jessica and questioned her about the whereabouts of Isadora but she had told him that the last time she lay her eyes on her was way back in the morning. She had not seen her again since then. Alexander thanked her and made for the kitchen. But unfortunately, she was not there too. ’Where the hell could she be now?’ He clenched his fists. Patience was not a virtue in him.

"Have you seen Isadora, the new maid?" He asked a maid who was walking through the hallway.

"No, your highness," the maid said and halted to admire the cute prince. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that she was not going to let slip. Alexander didn’t notice this at first as he was searching the hallways. His gaze shifted back to the stagnant maid and he looked at her questioningly.

"What are you looking at?" He asked raising a brow. The maid shook her head before she left, almost running. This made Alexander to chuckle. He was used to maids drooling over him after all. But that was not he wanted for now. He had nearly searched the whole castle but Isadora was nowhere to be found. He looked at many different places only to end up more disappointed. And eventually, he gave up looking for her.

He just walked through the empty hallways lazily. The dagger was still in his hand. He halted when he took notice of Elle’s room by the end of another hallway. Maybe I should visit my sister, he thought. After all, it had been a while since he saw her gorgeous face. He was already missing it.

The throne hall was located on the same hallway as Elle’s room and the library too. So this hallway had more of knights than maids. Stationery palace guards stood on both sides of Elle’s room, the throne hall and the library too. Only one maid was on the hallway. She was coming out of Elle’s room with an empty tray.

Alexander took brisk steps across the hallway with all his attention diverted to Elle’s room. She was the only person in his mind at the moment. The knights who stood by the library’s door bowed once he was close enough. The throne hall’s double doors were slightly open and one could see the throne seat from outside. But as occupied as Alexander was with Elle in his mind, he didn’t notice this. He neared the throne hall and for some odd reason, he felt the urge to look inside but brushed the thought out of his mind. But the more he ignored that feeling, the more stronger it got. ’Come on Alexander. A look won’t hurt,’ that was what ran across his mind and he found his head whipping towards the throne hall as he passed across. However, his mind was not there so he didn’t bother until he took a few steps ahead.

Wait! What exactly did I see? He questioned himself, his finger lifted mid-air. No! That couldn’t be. Was his eyes playing tricks on him? But he was certain that he was not hallucinating. He had seen a familiar face in there. His instincts instructed him to go back and confirm and he found himself pushing the throne hall’s doors open. But when his gaze landed on the scenario in front of his eyes, his face turned colder, more colder that the temperatures in the room seemed to have dropped.

"What do you think you are doing?" His cold voice resonated in the room startling the figures inside. And there on the floor, Isadora was kneeling while Sir Brandon placed a sword on her neck. Princess Roselyn was looking back at Alexander startled by his sudden appearance.

"Your... highness? I didn’t know you were here." She said, struggling to keep her voice neutral. Alexander glared at Sir Brandon before his gaze landed on his broken arm. It was now held with a sling around his neck.

"Seems that was not enough." He said taking a step closer. "Remove that sword from her neck or else... Who even gave you the permission to touch her?" Alexander was trying hard to retain his cool here. If only Sir Brandon was not a royal member’s personal knight, this scenario would have been an ages history right now. He was also not thick skinned to attack him aimlessly. This would cause strained relations between Valoria and Arcadia. Both his mother and father would never forgive him for such a thing. The good relations between the two countries could be dated back to as far as centuries ago.

"Her highness, princess Roselyn did," Sir Brandon replied tried hard to maintain his cool. This guy’s aura was so intimidating! He was just staring at him and he could feel a cold chill run down his spine by just his mere look.

Alexander’s sharp gaze turned and looked at Roselyn. Her heart nearly crawled out of her body at this sight of him. The look he was giving her now could even bring an emperor to his knees. It could as well be termed shortly as the devil’s stare. Gods! If looks could kill!

"She committed an unforgivable mistake your highness," she said looking at Isadora in disdain. Alexander’s gaze did not soften either.

"And what did she do to deserve a punishment from you?" He asked coldly making her to stiffen. Her face was nowhere closer to that of a calm person. Her usually calm and beautiful face was now dripping with sweat uncontrollably.

"She.. she slept with you in your room... last night," she managed to say. Alexander’s face grew even more darker at this. His gaze was now pressing Roselyn down to nothingness. She felt like a mere mortal who could lose her life anytime under his scrutiny and mercy.

"And what authority do you have to punish her for that? You are not even my mistress, let alone wife-to-be." He sneered. That statement alone was enough to switch Roselyn’s mood from that of fear to that of surprise. She knew that he despised him, but this much! All because of that bitch? She shot a hard glare at Isadora who had now stood up. "You bitc...."

"Mind your words princess!" Alexander warned, pointing his finger at her face. "You are only standing now with your head intact all thanks to your title and our kingdom’s close relation with yours. Otherwise....." He breathed heavily letting her guess the consequences of her actions. He then turned around and scanned Isadora’s body. He was more than glad that she was not unscathed. Then with one final glance at Roselyn, he said, " Let this serve as a warning to both of you. If word about you touching even a single strand of her hair comes out, consider yourself dead meat! And next time, I will not care whether you are a princess or not."

He released a silent breath, probably tired of giving empty threats. He didn’t like it either. And as they say, actions speak louder than words. Only if she was not a princess.
