The Assassin's Redemption: A Princess's Journey to Forgiveness
Chapter 54: Eggs
Isadora the last of the dirt before she rinsed her body and stepped out of the pool. She dried her body with a towel and slipped into her maiden attire. Before stepping out of the room, she studied herself one last time in the mirror and was pleased by what she saw. She was now looking like her gorgeous self but she had still lost some weight. Her skin had gained its radiance back and her now perfectly combed hair added to her unmatched beauty.
She took one last glance at the small room before picking up her backpack and exiting the room. On arriving at what she could term as the sitting room, she found no one except for the blind man who sat in the rocking chair. She didn’t want to leave unannounced despite the cold treatment she received from the woman who was the owner of the house. That was not the real her.
"Excuse me. Where is the owner of the house? The one we came with." She asked and the man stopped rocking the chair.
"She’s in the kitchen." He replied curtly before he resumed rocking the chair. Isadora just stared at him with pity but she knew she could do nothing more. Turning her attention towards the kitchen, she heard the sound of a woman humming a song and the smell of fried eggs filled the air. But the food was not what had brought her here. Still, she was still full. Laura had made sure she emptied her plate before she left. And as caring as Laura was, she had packed a few baked cakes for her which she had enjoyed during her journey.
And even before she realized it, she had already reached where the kitchen was located. She knocked softly on the door and the humming inside stopped. The woman’s voice called for her to come in, and after a while of hesitation, she stepped in.
The sweet and alluring aroma of freshly baked eggs welcomed her together with a warm smile from the woman, a big contrast to what she expected.
"Leaving already?" She asked and Isadora nodded. This woman was hard to understand. The first time, she was cold and distant, and now she acted friendly. She was now confusing Isadora.
"Why don’t you stay for lunch? I was making these for you." She said gesturing towards the eggs that were now on the pan. Isadora was taken aback by the request but she had to keep going. The funeral must have started already and she wanted to be there before it ended. She had so many things to make up for.
"Thanks for the offer but I have to keep going. There’s someplace that I am needed urgently.
The woman just smiled wryly before she let her gaze travel Isadora’s length. A look of surprise registered on her face and she raised her brows questioningly.
"Why didn’t you tell me you were a maid before?" She asked. Isadora was taken aback by the question. The woman had not even given her the luxury to introduce herself yet she was asking her questions as if they had met for almost eternity. This woman was really confusing. "You must know my daughter then. She is called Lydia. She works in Lady Elle’s quarters."
"Yes. The blonde girl, right?" Isadora said. She just wanted to get over this conversation and get going.
"No. The sun-skinned one, with brown hair." Oh no! This was not going how she had planned. How would she get over the conversation without making the woman sad?
"Thank you for everything but I really have to keep going." She blurted out.
"What about the eggs? Won’t you carry some at least?" Isadora did not want to stay any longer nor did she want to hurt the woman’s feelings. Just two minutes, she told herself.
"Okay. I will carry the eggs. Just try to be swift." She said. The woman was more than happy to hear that. She gestured for Isadora to take a seat as she prepared the eggs for her. Isadora didn’t protest though she was now fidgeting in her seat regretting the idea already. Two minutes now seemed like an eternity to her. This was taking longer than she had expected, or maybe she was just impatient.
"Here you go." The woman finally entered the room with the eggs well-packed. Isadora rose hastily from her seat before she took the eggs and left after saying goodbye to the woman, whom she learned was called Natalya, and her father as well.
The castle was not too far from where Natalya’s house was located. She just crossed a few allies before she found herself standing in front of the magnificent castle gate which was now busy. People were streaming in and out of the palace. Faces of different continents could be easily spotted in the vicinity. Isadora was glad for that as she could easily blend in with them, and her maiden attire would be an added advantage.
From afar, she could spot Griffin’s carriage parked beside many other regal-looking carriages. The palace’s compound was more busy than she had expected. She strode across the area and was glad that no one had recognized her until now. Maybe this was the perfect time to go and see Alexander. Most of the knights were patrolling the palace grounds and the throne hall, where the funeral ceremony would take place.
Stepping into the familiar hallways, Isadora caught sight of Jessica making her heart to nearly jump out of her chest. Fortunately, the fat woman was busy yelling orders to some maids. And thinking of maids, Isadora knew she was one herself. She went in the opposite direction as she didn’t want to come across the annoying woman. And who knew she would call the knights if she caught sight of her?
Thanks to staying here for a while she had learned the many shortcuts in the hallway. She used one of the most unused hallways, and though it was longer, it was the only safer way for now. And for some odd reason, the hallway felt ominously quiet. Or maybe not. She could hear a familiar voice on a corner. That was Roselyn’s voice! That was the last person she wanted to come across in this palace. But if she ran or walked without looking back, she might be able to go unnoticed. She looked back and saw two knights coming on her way. Oh no! This was now turning out to be harder than she had expected. But she of course had a few tricks up her sleeve. She was an Arcadian royalty after all.
