Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Don’t Mess Around

Nathaniel Nathan looked at his girl’s bright, yet somewhat defiant eyes. He frowned slightly, instantly understanding. She only dared to say such things because he had to return to his unit immediately. The helicopter was waiting outside; he had absolutely no time to linger with her.

He took a step closer, leaving less than five centimeters between them. He lowered his head slightly, his breath ghosting across Vera Xavier’s face, making her skin tingle and itch.

The moment he drew near, she felt an immense pressure and instantly lost her nerve. As she subconsciously tried to back away, he wrapped an arm around her waist and gently tilted her chin up with his other hand.

He lowered his head a fraction more, until his lips were less than two centimeters from hers.

Vera remembered how bold he could be and immediately grew tense. ’This is a hospital!’ In an era where even kissing on the street was considered scandalous, how could her heart not pound with nervousness?

She said at once, "Nathaniel Nathan, don’t get any ideas!"

After speaking, she subconsciously glanced around. Night had already fallen, and they were standing in a deserted corner on the east side of the hospital. Seeing no one around, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Nathaniel drew another centimeter closer and asked softly, "Get any ideas? What kind of ideas do you think I’d get? Hm?"

His voice lilted up on the last word, and that sound, combined with his already low, seductive tone, made Vera feel as if he had just forcefully plucked a string deep inside her heart.

’I’m going to die of regret,’ she thought. ’I should have known. He looks so cold and aloof, but deep down, he’s a total rogue. I never should have provoked him.’

She bit her lip, saying nothing. But he spoke again, "And another thing... why a puppy? Wasn’t it a big wolfdog?"

Vera’s face, which had only been slightly flushed, instantly turned crimson all the way to her ears. She immediately recalled the completely illogical story she had fabricated a few days ago to cover up a lie. ’So he heard it all!’

She whimpered internally. ’He heard everything! How could he have heard that!’

She decided to play dumb. "What big wolfdog?"

Nathaniel chuckled, then lowered his head and nipped her neck. A jolt of electricity shot through her, and she felt as if her very bones were melting.

Vera felt utterly mortified.

Nathaniel asked her, "Remember now? If not, I can always do it again."

Vera bit down on her lip, struggling to keep her voice steady. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

In the quiet of the night, in their secluded corner, the only sound she could hear was her own heartbeat. She had no idea that her voice, without her realizing it, was now tinged with a seductive allure.

Hearing her voice, Nathaniel felt something tug at his heart. He understood at once. Though he had been the one teasing her, she had inadvertently aroused him to the point where blood rushed south. The self-control he’d always prided himself on was utterly worthless before her, instantly shattering into dust.

His own heart began to race. In that moment, he truly wanted to throw caution to the wind, hold her, and take her right then and there.

Vera felt the change in his body and was instantly terrified. She inwardly cursed herself for never learning her lesson. She knew perfectly well that he was not a man to be trifled with; the last time she’d teased him, things had almost gotten out of hand!

She pressed her hands against his chest, her face a mask of sudden realization. "Oh, I remember now! A big wolfdog is much fiercer than a puppy. They’re legendary, said to be just like real wolves. Nathaniel, how about we get a big wolfdog someday!"
