The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master
Chapter 297: Family Misfortune
The Preston Family had a lot going on lately. A huge drama seemed to unfold in the compound every other day, to the point where the residents would run over to the Prestons’ house whenever they heard a commotion.
Right now, a large crowd had gathered outside the Preston family’s door. Given how shrewish Rona Langdon usually was, aside from Alden and a few of her mahjong buddies, very few people in the compound were on good terms with her.
After everything that had happened over the past few days, it was obvious to everyone what Rona Langdon was trying to do. What Grandma Dixon said immediately resonated with the entire crowd.
That’s right, who doesn’t have some savings? What kind of wife completely ignores her sick husband to go play mahjong? And then refuses to pay for his treatment? In the old days, a woman like that would be drowned in a pig cage, and that would be getting off light!
Rona Langdon immediately shot back, "Whether my family has money or not is none of your damn business!"
Grandma said coldly, "Whether your family has money may be none of the neighbors’ business, but it is my business! Rona Langdon, I’m swallowing my pride to ask you one last time: are you going to pay for Zachary’s treatment or not?"
Even if she was a complete fool, Rona Langdon knew she couldn’t say she wouldn’t pay for Zachary Preston’s treatment. So, she sat on the ground and began to wail, "Why is my life so miserable! Scraping by day to day was bad enough, but now that Preston is sick and there’s no money for his treatment, you all come to me for it. Where is a woman like me supposed to get that kind of money!"
After her tirade, she glared at Grandma and said, "Don’t you still have a lot of valuable paintings and calligraphy? Why don’t you sell those to pay for Zachary Preston’s medical bills?"
Hearing this, Grandma knew exactly what Rona Langdon was scheming. Those words made her lose all remaining hope for her daughter-in-law. She said coldly, "Didn’t you steal one of our paintings to sell the last time you came over? You of all people should know whether they’re real or fake."
Grandma knew that things had reached a point of no return. It was better to be rid of a daughter-in-law like Rona Langdon. That being the case, there was no longer any need to save face for her!
"Stealing from the elderly! How shameless!" Grandma Dixon immediately chimed in.
Her words once again resonated with the crowd of neighbors. They looked at Rona Langdon with utter contempt, pointing and muttering at her.
Seeing that her usual tricks weren’t working today, Rona Langdon burst into loud sobs. "Zachary Preston is your son, and even you won’t take care of him, yet you expect me, a woman, to do it! You Prestons are bullies! I want a divorce!"
Theresa Goodman was so furious watching Rona Langdon’s performance that she could have exploded. It was obvious she was just throwing a tantrum to avoid paying for Zachary Preston’s treatment. ’Rona Langdon is truly disgusting!’
However, from her position, she couldn’t force Rona Langdon to use her money to save Zachary Preston.
So she turned to look at Grandma. Grandma heaved a long sigh and said, "What a great misfortune for our family, to have married such a wicked wife!"
Vera Xavier saw that the atmosphere was sufficiently charged and that Rona Langdon was now the target of public scorn. She spoke up, "Mom, as your daughter, I won’t comment on your desire to divorce Dad. But before that happens, please hand over the family’s bankbook. Regardless of how much is in there, I need it for Dad’s treatment. We can’t let his medical payments be cut off."
Rona Langdon shot her a vicious glare. Rona was no fool; she had long since figured out that everything today was Vera Xavier’s idea.
Rona Langdon snarled through gritted teeth, "I must have been cursed for eight lifetimes to have a treacherous daughter like you! If I’d known then what you’d become, I would have strangled you at birth!"
