As evening slipped into night, the storm intensified.

The wind howled through the trees, bending their branches as a lone Bentley sped down the deserted road leading into the vast private estate.

With every metre she covered, drawing closer to the destination, Aliana’s heart began to race.

She knew what she was doing was reckless.

Completely outrageous.

And yet, she could not bring herself to turn back now, as there was no other choice left to her.

Her grip tightened around the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white when her destination finally came into view.

Drawing in a sharp breath, she turned smoothly and brought the car to a stop before the towering metallic gates, where guards stood on alert.

As one of them approached, she lowered her window, the cold wind brushing against her skin.

"How can I help you, miss?" the guard asked.

"I’m Aliana Vanderbilt. Open the gate. The owner of this property is expecting me," Aliana replied, projecting a confidence she didn’t really feel.

"Give me a moment, miss."

The guard stepped away and hurried towards the guard room, most likely to confirm her claim.

As the seconds stretched, Aliana waited, fully aware that she could be turned away at any moment.

But if that happened, ’I will still find another way,’ she told herself, as though trying to steady her resolve.

But, to her shock, the massive gates began to groan open.

She swallowed hard as she watched them widen.

Realisation hit her all at once... he knows she is here... in his lair, and the fact that he had granted her entry made her heart slam against her chest like a trapped bird.

Without allowing herself another moment to think, she pressed down on the accelerator, and the Bentley zoomed into the massive property.

She noticed that, much like her family’s estate, this property featured a long, winding drive before the mansion even came into view.

Her eyes shifted from the smooth, wide road to the rows of trees bowing under the assault of the gale-force wind, while lightning continued to strobe across the bruised, dark sky.

Her teeth sank into her lower lip when, after a ten-minute drive, the house finally appeared.... a stunning blend of classic European architecture and modern elegance. It was smaller than her family’s estate, but the surrounding grounds were just as vast.

As she pulled into the driveway, the car rolled to a halt, and the engine fell silent. Yet Aliana remained still for a moment, her hands still gripping the steering wheel.

She closed her eyes and rested her forehead against it, taking a few seconds to calm the restless rhythm of her thoughts.

"What am I even doing..." she murmured under her breath.

For a brief moment, she questioned every decision that had led her here.

Even after boldly asking Cillian for the address and driving nearly an hour through the storm to reach this place, she still did not know what she would actually do once she stepped out of the car and walked through those looming black panelled glass doors that led to him.

For a brief moment, she wondered if she should turn back, but a loud crack of thunder followed by a flash of lightning tore through the sky, jolting her out of her hesitation.

Straightening in her seat, she drew in a deep breath before murmuring under it, "Screw this. I might as well see it through since I’m already here."

With that, she unfastened her seatbelt and stepped out of the car. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

The moment her feet touched the ground, a strong gust of wind swept past her, tossing her hair wildly.

Along with it came a strange sensation, something unfamiliar, as though the very air around this place carried a different kind of energy than anything she had ever felt before.

It was not just a mansion.

It felt... alive.

As she lifted her hand to brush her hair away from her face, her light grey eyes rose to take in the architecture before her. There was something about it that pulled at her, something subtle yet impossible to ignore.

Almost as if it was calling to her.

Without realising it, she closed her eyes and drew in another deep breath.

The scent of rain hitting the dry earth filled her senses, followed by something richer.... roses. The fragrance wrapped around her gently, bringing with it an unexpected sense of comfort she could not quite explain.

But she could not linger there any longer.

A heavy drop of rain struck her cheek and slid down, pulling her back to the moment. Opening her eyes, she realised the rain had already begun to fall more rapidly.

Without wasting another second, she made her way towards the entrance of the mansion.

Reaching the door, she lifted her hand and knocked lightly against the glass, waiting for someone to answer.

As a minute passed with no response, her brows drew together in confusion.

Did he not have any staff in the house?

It was not as though he didn’t know she was here... so why?

She waited a few more seconds, but when no one came, she reached for the handle and turned it, only to find the door unlocked.

Already damp from the rain, she let out a quiet sigh before stepping inside.

Shutting the door behind her, Aliana’s eyes adjusted as she took in the interior.

The space was dimly lit, with not a single soul in sight. The only sound that filled the silence was the distant roar of the storm outside.

The decor was elegant and easy on the eyes, yet there was a certain coldness to it. A quiet emptiness that made the place feel almost lifeless, as though its owner had never cared to give it warmth.

As she stepped further into the grand foyer, her gaze moved across the details.

Dark abstract paintings framed in gold lined the walls. At the centre stood a large table adorned with a crystal vase filled with fresh roses, their scent filling the air. Above, a grand chandelier hung from the ceiling, its light faint and warm, while a sweeping staircase curved upwards into the shadows.

As she walked forward, her footsteps remained light against the polished white marble floor until she paused at the sight of a set of tall wooden doors to her right. They stood partially open, a flickering glow spilling through the gap as though something inside was burning.

Her pulse had not calmed, and something within her told her with quiet certainty that the person she had come for was waiting right there.

The grip on her handbag tightened as she drew in one last breath before forcing herself to step forward and enter the room.

As she crossed the threshold, her boots came to an abrupt halt.

Her gaze instantly locked onto a lone figure seated near the fireplace in the expansive living room.

He sat with effortless ease in an armchair, the firelight dancing around him.

Yet there was something undeniably commanding in his presence, like a king who had been waiting to pass judgement on a sinner.

And that sinner, at this very moment, was her.

On sensing her gaze, his head shifted ever so slightly from the fireplace, turning to meet her eyes with his alluring, icy blue ones.

For a fleeting moment, Aliana felt as though the very air had been stolen from her lungs at the breathtaking sight of him.

She didn’t make a sound, nor did she move from where she stood, as they remained locked in a silent stare.

That was when she felt it... something about him was different. Something dangerous that sent a quiet, instinctive warning through her, as though a predator had fixed its attention on its prey.
