"Could you grill a chicken rack for me? They don’t really like it, but I love it. And grill three pig’s feet, for Tang Dou and the others to grind their teeth on," Qiaoqiao said as she handed over the items to be grilled.
"I think it’s better to let them gnaw on it raw. Once it’s grilled, it’s all sticky and hard to chew," Liu Banxia commented casually.
"Oh come on, eating cooked food helps with digestion," Qiaoqiao replied.
Without any other choice, Liu Banxia obediently put the items on the grill. He also had to set the pig’s feet aside so they wouldn’t get any seasoning on them.
It seemed like they knew it was a special grilling session for them. Tang Dou and Tiggie, leading the four little ones, waddled over. Accompanying them was Doudou.
The four little pups were really just her toys. They didn’t care what they ate as much, and when the toys were on the move, they had to follow along.
"Hey, aren’t you all done with eating and drinking? Shouldn’t you be thinking about replacing Su Wenhao?" Liu Banxia called out.
"Teacher Liu, to be fair, Old Su’s skills are really unbeatable," Huang Bo laughed and said.
"I can give it a try, but don’t blame me if it’s not grilled well. Without Old Su around, I might have a chance to show off, but now I’m too scared."
"You can just sit down; I’ll grill it myself. Everyone’s almost done eating anyway, grilling takes no time now," Su Wenhao said.
"You are quite an honest guy, make sure to eat more yourself. Otherwise, with all the smoke and grilling, you might lose your appetite," Liu Banxia said.
Su Wenhao nodded with a smile, not acting courteously with Liu Banxia.
Time spent together had fostered a deep understanding of Liu Banxia’s personality. While one might have to be mindful in other settings, there was no need for that here.
"I wonder what it will be like when I intern in the future," Xiao Yue sighed.
"What else? Just like me," Liang Xiaolin replied.
"First, study with Director Liu for two years, and then I could probably mentor you, too. By then, you’ll have many choices: my brother, Chief Director Li, hahaha, you’ll have your work cut out for you."
Apparently imagining the joyous future of harassing Xiao Yue, Liang Xiaolin was quite pleased herself.
Xiao Yue’s face turned sour at once, knowing well what learning with Liu Banxia entailed. Not only had Xu Yino and the others shared stories, but she also had firsthand information from her cousin, Xu Dan.
"It’s really nothing; as long as you can endure the first two months, it’ll be fine," Liu Yiqing said.
"Does that mean the requirements will relax after two months?" Xiao Yue asked eagerly.
"No, after two months you’ll just realize you’re used to it, like a dead pig that doesn’t fear scalding water," Liu Yiqing responded.
The others all nodded in agreement, even Qing Kewa did.
Her initial role was somewhat special, so Liu Banxia’s demands on her were not as stringent. Still, she hadn’t avoided her share of difficulties.
"This guy is really determined to cement my title as the Great Demon King. Xiao Yue, as long as you come to the second hospital for training, you won’t escape my grasp," Liu Banxia said with a sly smile.
Xiao Yue’s advantage was having good resources.
With Director Xiao at the second hospital, surely she’d receive due attention. Precisely because of this, she’d be held to high standards wherever she interned, just like Liang Xiaolin.
Clinical medicine is like that, involving many procedures. It’s not enough to just observe or extern, unless your future aspiration is purely administrative, simply aiming for graduation.
Liu Banxia was confident that when Xiao Yue came for an externship in her senior year, she’d be properly trained. Then, during her final year, she’d get a full year’s worth of coaching.
Graduate-level internships would then be entrusted to the cardiac surgery department, laying a solid foundation for Xiao Yue’s basic skills.
However, how much hardship she would endure depended on Xiao Yue’s insight and operational ability. At any rate, Liu Banxia wouldn’t relax his standards, and he could assure that with complete confidence.
"Brother Liu, do you usually guide study or occasionally organize team-building activities like this?" Qiu Mingyuan asked curiously.
"Not a chance, the Great Demon King at most invites us for a dish in the cafeteria," Xu Yino began venting.
"This time there are mainly two reasons, one is the great success of the live surgery, and the other is because of Qing Kewa’s influence. My dear doll, you should consider coming once a month."
"I’d love to, but there just isn’t enough time," Qing Kewa honestly replied.
"Actually, studying medicine, especially during the first few years at the hospital, is indeed busy," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Book knowledge is important, but it’s more focused on the theoretical side. Practical operations are different; you have to get your hands well-trained."
"Like me, originally I wasn’t that good at grilling skewers. But now, no matter what, I’m almost catching up to Comrade Old Su’s level. That’s progress. Come on, dear, the fragrant grilled chicken rack is ready."
"Oh, come on, stop being sticky and share the pig’s trotters with Tang Dou and Tiggie." Qiaoqiao rolled her eyes at him.
"Sure thing." Liu Banxia replied.
The freshly roasted pig’s trotters were still somewhat hot. Tang Dou and Tiggie, the experienced dogs, didn’t mind, but the dogs Beifeng, Dongfeng, Nanfeng, and Xifeng had no idea, just wanting to eat, causing them to howl when burned.
Especially Dongfeng, barking non-stop at a piece of pig’s trotter, refusing to lose in momentum.
Though Qiaoqiao liked eating chicken racks, she only took a few bites before passing the rest to Liu Banxia. It’s a habit, wanting to try everything but not eating too much for the baby’s sake.
Having almost finished the kebabs, the steak should have been served but went on hold. The final dish was Qiaoqiao’s favorite, poached fish.
Usually, Liu Banxia wouldn’t let her eat too much, especially having just eaten some last time, so she took the chance to indulge now.
She really bought plenty; just the filleted fish filled a big bowl. Liu Banxia made two pots, serving up two large bowls. Everyone enjoyed it, even Doudou ate several pieces of the non-spicy version.
"Today was such a treat. It would be great to rest tomorrow and take a nice long bath." Xu Yino stretched after eating her fill.
"I really stuffed myself today. Applying a steady face mask later will be nice." Liu Yiqing chimed in happily.
"Don’t just focus on eating. Take heart to what I said today." Liu Banxia reminded.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"Qing Kewa, why are you nodding too?" Qiaoqiao asked with a laugh.
"It’s different. Dr. Liu is my teacher, so I should remember his words. But there’s one problem—I don’t get to rescue on site, such a pity." Qing Kewa said, a bit downcast.
Her frustration wasn’t about nodding, but about not having the chance like Xu Yino and others to attempt on-site rescues.
Listening to Xu Yino’s thrilling accounts today made her yearn for a chance herself.
"Sigh... Am I working too hard as a teacher? Covering everything from eating, drinking, living, and learning." Liu Banxia remarked.
"Haha, greetings Teacher Liu." Qiu Mingyuan responded seriously.
"But Brother Liu is indeed very dedicated. My dad wasn’t this thorough with his students, even with the graduate students he mentored." Xiao Yue commented.
"Everyone has their own ways. I’m still young, so teaching with new methods is necessary." Liu Banxia laughed.
"A mentor teaches, guides, and solves problems. Currently, I’m still learning myself, but I can scrape by at teaching and solving problems."
"Teaching them what I know and helping them avoid the mistakes I’ve made. Thinking through any unclear issues with them makes me content."
"High-level mentors like Director Xiao and Director Zhou are busy daily and can’t have as much time as I do."
"It’s just this batch. I can’t focus as much on those studying at the Emergency Center now. I mostly assess their operational standards and conduct periodic evaluations."
"Haha, we’re pretty lucky then." Xu Yino joked.
"Feeling lucky should come with preparing for hardship. The day after tomorrow, there’s a surgery involving liver autotransplantation to remove tumors. You’ll all observe then." Liu Banxia informed.
"I secured this opportunity with the director. Shi Lei is the first assistant; compete among yourselves to be the second, third, or supportive assistant—it depends on your abilities."
"Teacher Liu, rest assured. If I can assist with you in surgery, what am I afraid of?" Xu Yino boldly declared.
"Yes, after learning with Teacher Liu for so long, not only have my medical skills greatly improved, my courage has grown too." Su Wenhao added.
The group laughed, rarely hearing the honest student speak his mind.
Indeed, everyone felt similarly; Liu Banxia was absolutely an excellent teacher. Though strict, much knowledge was gained—truly they’re fortunate.
Initially, they were swayed to Second Hospital when heated and reckless. In hindsight, it was quite pleasant.
Of course, it would be even better without Teacher Liu’s tricky ways—hard to guard against, often keeping them on edge.
"Drive slowly when you leave. No calls chasing us means nothing urgent. Take these freshly cooked kebabs and untouched poached fish back; reheat in the microwave later." Liu Banxia suggested.
"Teacher Liu, let us help clean up before leaving." Huang Bo offered.
"No need, Xu Yino and the others are tasked with cleaning." Liu Banxia replied.
The group didn’t insist, thanking Liu Banxia and Qiaoqiao again before taking the kebabs and poached fish to drive back to the hospital.
