The Exiled Duke's Lottery system
Chapter 2 - The Poisioning
Chapter 2: The Poison Beneath the Crown
Lucien was no longer in the ritual chamber.
The stone halls of House Valcroix’s inner estate were quieter, but not peaceful. They were the kind of silence that only existed in places where everyone was thinking too much and speaking too little.
He was escorted through them without resistance.
Not because he accepted it.
But because his body still didn’t feel like it fully belonged to him.
Every step was slightly delayed, like his nerves were still learning how to function in this world.
Two armored knights walked beside him. Not touching him, but close enough to stop him if he collapsed.
Behind them, a mage followed at a distance, scanning him occasionally with faint pulses of mana.
Lucien noticed everything.
He didn’t know how.
But he did.
His awareness felt sharper than it should have been for someone in his condition.
And somewhere at the edge of his vision, something faint flickered.
Not fully formed.
Not active.
Just present.
> [SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE]
> [HOST CONDITION: UNSTABLE]
> [FOREIGN INTERFERENCE DETECTED]
Lucien didn’t react outwardly.
But inwardly, the words repeated.
Foreign interference.
Poison.
Someone had done this before the awakening ritual.
Which meant one thing.
This wasn’t failure.
This was manipulation.
They brought him into a side chamber.
Smaller than the ritual hall. Less ceremonial. More functional.
A medical inspection room.
Stone walls. Mana arrays engraved into the floor. A floating crystal device in the center humming softly.
The knights stepped back.
The mage stepped forward.
"Sit," the mage said.
Lucien obeyed.
Not out of submission.
But because standing felt like wasting energy he didn’t fully have.
The mage raised his hand.
Mana flowed.
The crystal device activated.
A soft blue light spread across Lucien’s body.
At first, nothing happened.
Then the light flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then distorted.
The mage frowned.
"...Strange."
He increased output.
The crystal brightened.
The distortion became stronger.
Lucien felt it then.
A pressure inside his body reacting to the scan.
Like something hidden was being pulled toward the surface.
His chest tightened slightly.
The mage’s eyes narrowed.
"Mana flow is... artificially disrupted."
He leaned closer.
"Not naturally collapsed. Something has been suppressing it for a long period."
Lucien remained silent.
But his attention sharpened further.
So it was real.
Not just suspicion.
Confirmation.
The mage stepped back slightly.
"I need higher resolution scan."
He placed both hands on the device.
Mana surged more intensely.
The room temperature shifted.
The air felt heavier.
Then—
The crystal flashed violently.
A distorted image appeared above it.
Lucien’s internal pathways.
But they were not clean.
Thin dark threads were visible inside his mana channels.
Like veins of corruption spread throughout his body.
The mage froze.
"...Poison."
One of the knights stiffened.
"Poison?" he repeated.
The mage didn’t answer immediately.
He focused deeper.
Then spoke slowly.
"Low-grade mana suppression toxin. But used repeatedly. Layered over time."
Lucien listened carefully.
Repeated exposure.
Not a single dose.
Long-term control.
The mage continued.
"It doesn’t kill. It weakens. Slowly. It makes mana pathways unstable over time."
He paused.
Then added something worse.
"And it reacts violently during awakening."
Silence followed.
The knight’s voice dropped.
"So the failure... wasn’t natural."
The mage shook his head.
"No. This level of collapse is not normal rejection."
He looked directly at Lucien for the first time with something closer to seriousness.
"It was induced."
Lucien didn’t move.
But internally, everything aligned.
His weakness.
His failure.
The collapse.
None of it was organic.
It had been engineered.
And someone had ensured it happened at the worst possible moment.
The mage lowered his hands.
The crystal dimmed.
The image disappeared.
He exhaled slowly.
"This will require reporting to the central authority."
One knight immediately responded.
"To the royal investigation branch?"
"Yes," the mage said. "This is beyond internal family issue."
Lucien’s gaze shifted slightly.
Royal authority.
Meaning this wasn’t just House Valcroix anymore.
This could reach the kingdom itself.
The door opened behind them.
A heavier presence entered.
Lucien didn’t need to turn to recognize it.
The noble who had judged him in the ritual chamber.
He stepped inside calmly.
His eyes immediately went to Lucien.
Then to the mage.
"Report."
The mage hesitated briefly, then spoke.
"His mana system has been compromised. Long-term suppression toxins detected."
A pause.
Then—
"Intentional."
The room went silent.
The noble’s expression didn’t change immediately.
But something in the air did.
Sharper.
Colder.
More controlled.
"Explain," he said.
The mage repeated everything.
Slow poisoning.
Layered suppression.
Awakening destabilization.
Induced collapse.
By the time he finished, the noble had already understood everything.
Not emotionally.
Politically.
Lucien watched quietly.
He noticed something subtle.
The noble wasn’t shocked.
He was calculating.
That meant this wasn’t just medical information.
It was political damage.
Finally, the noble spoke.
"Who had access to Lucien during the last three months?"
The mage blinked.
"...House Valcroix personnel only."
The noble turned slightly.
"Specifically."
A pause.
Then one knight answered.
"Family residence staff. Training supervisors. Medical attendants."
The noble’s gaze narrowed slightly.
"Any irregular access?"
Silence.
Then—
"Yes," the knight said slowly. "There was one case."
Lucien’s attention sharpened.
The knight continued.
"One of the direct heirs had increased interaction with him during training supervision."
The room shifted slightly.
Everyone understood what that implied.
A sibling.
Lucien didn’t react outwardly.
But something inside him tightened.
So it wasn’t random corruption.
It was internal.
Family level.
The noble exhaled once.
Slow.
Controlled.
Then spoke.
"This matter will remain classified until further investigation."
He turned slightly toward Lucien.
"For now, your status remains revoked."
A pause.
"But you will not be discarded immediately."
Lucien met his gaze for the first time since awakening.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Just awareness.
The noble continued.
"You will be relocated outside the main estate."
A final statement.
"Under observation."
Lucien was escorted again.
But this time, something felt different.
Not physically.
But structurally.
The way people looked at him had changed.
Before, he was a failure.
Now, he was a problem.
That was worse.
As they walked through the outer corridors, Lucien’s mind processed everything.
Poison.
Internal betrayal.
Family involvement.
And then—
The engagement.
The royal princess.
A genius-level existence tied to him by political contract.
If he was removed...
That agreement would collapse.
Or be reassigned.
Meaning someone else inside the family had a direct incentive.
The pieces weren’t scattered anymore.
They were forming a shape.
> [SYSTEM ACTIVITY DETECTED]
Lucien froze slightly mid-step.
Only he saw it.
> [FOREIGN INTERFERENCE IDENTIFIED: TOXIN SIGNATURE MATCH CONFIRMED]
> [ANALYSIS COMPLETE]
> [PRIMARY SOURCE: HOUSEHOLD INTERNAL ACCESS]
Lucien’s eyes narrowed slightly.
So even the system confirmed it.
Not speculation.
Confirmation.
They reached a smaller chamber.
Not prison.
Not room of honor.
Just... separation.
A place for someone who didn’t belong in either category anymore.
The guard unlocked the door.
"Stay inside," he said flatly.
Lucien entered.
The door closed.
No chains.
No restraints.
Just isolation.
Silence returned.
For the first time since awakening, Lucien was alone.
He leaned slightly against the wall.
His body still felt unstable, but better than before.
Not healed.
But no longer collapsing.
And then—
The system appeared again.
Fully this time.
> [INITIALIZATION STATUS: COMPLETE]
> [NEW CONDITION MET: EXTERNAL THREAT IDENTIFIED]
> [SYSTEM RESPONSE UNLOCKED]
Lucien’s eyes sharpened slightly.
Something was coming.
Not passive anymore.
Active.
Then the final line appeared.
> [INITIAL FREE REWARD DETECTED]
> [UNLOCK CONDITION: EXILE EVENT REQUIRED]
> [CURRENT STATUS: NOT YET MET]
Lucien stared at it for a long moment.
Exile.
So it was already decided.
Even if the family hadn’t officially done it yet.
The system already knew.
Or predicted it.
He slowly closed his eyes.
So his first life ended in exhaustion.
His second began in betrayal.
And whatever came next...
Would begin with exile.
