Chapter 261: I Am an Assassin

(Yesterday, my wife and kid took the train back home first. I, Old Lai, need to continue writing and updating, and will stay until the end of the month. Shenzhen’s ticket windows have reduced from ten days to six days and then to two days, and the phone lines are impossible to get through. Starting now, Old Lai has to start writing for the airlines... Please subscribe!)

The driver was desperately fleeing, but Li Yan was much more at ease. So, when he noticed the driver’s intention and moved to collide, he had already seen a truck following behind. Therefore, he just postured to continue charging forward without the real intent to crash into him. To make the driver hit the truck behind on his own, Li Yan swerved to the side at the last moment, but there was also a private car driving parallelly. This scene startled the driver of the private car, prompting them to quickly slow down and brake.

The truck driver, sitting high and seeing far, had already noticed the bizarre scene ahead. All he could do was frantically honk the horn and then slow down. For the impending collision, he maintained a bit of a bystander’s attitude, not expecting at the critical moment, the car ahead to suddenly swerve aside, causing the reversing vehicle to crash toward him!

He was already decelerating but hadn’t come to a complete stop, while that reversing vehicle was speeding fast. The next moment, they collided!

After the collision occurred over there, Li Yan steered his car to the side, then stopped and got out, heading in that direction.

The private car, startled by his swerve, idled past with a window rolled down, yelling insults. Li Yan ignored it, waited for the car to pass, and moved toward the crash site, only to find the person wasn’t injured and had opened the door and fled the scene on foot!

Seeing the hit-and-run, the truck driver was outraged. How could that be permitted? He quickly got out to pursue. Other vehicles were all rubbernecking, but as the red light turned green, the cars ahead moved on. Even the passing cars, after a brief look, continued on their way.

...

A few minutes later, the hit-and-run driver had shaken off his pursuit by the truck driver. After all, his car was left there, and the truck driver couldn’t chase too far.

As he slowed down on a street to catch his breath, he noticed a car about ten meters behind him that looked familiar, trailing him steadily!

Stopping, he stared. Wasn’t that car driven by Li Yan, the one who had been chasing him earlier?

Cursing under his breath, he took off running again, looking back as he ran. He quickly realized this wasn’t working. Running forward allowed the car to conserve its energy, just needing to follow him at a slow pace. Frustrated, after running several dozen meters, he darted into an alley, then into a building’s corridor, and began heading upstairs.

To his shock, he had no time to find a hiding spot in the building. The footsteps below were hardly a floor’s distance away, alerting them immediately if he stopped or the footsteps changed in direction!

After considering a few options, he reluctantly continued upwards, finally reaching the rooftop.

"Keep running. You can jump over from here if you like!"

Li Yan had also made it to the rooftop, having not run nearly as long, conserving his energy. In fact, if he had wanted to, he could have caught the man in the stairwell; he merely wanted to chase him to an empty rooftop.

The man quickly ran a few steps on the rooftop. These were connected buildings, but there were significant height disparities, leaving him with only one side to jump across. He looked at Li Yan, retreating towards the rooftop’s edge.

Li Yan had the leisure to light a cigarette and then casually grabbed a brick from the rooftop entrance used as a doorstop.

"Jump!" he said, tossing the brick lightly in one hand as he moved forward.

The man was cold with sweat. He wanted to jump to the next building’s rooftop to gain an advantage. Even if Li Yan managed to jump over too, if he got there first, he could prevent Li Yan from jumping over. But he hadn’t expected Li Yan to grab a brick. Though confident in his jumping ability, he couldn’t dodge mid-air. If the brick struck and he fell onto the next rooftop, it’d be slightly better; falling down below meant certain death!

"Alright!" the man shouted, "Isn’t it just a traffic accident? I’ll go with you to the traffic police! Whatever needs to be done, I’ll do it; don’t try to hit me privately!"

The man looked resigned, halted his retreat, hesitated a bit, then walked over toward Li Yan with a deliberate stride.

"Crashing your car is just a traffic accident, huh? Well, I happen to have a construction accident here. Would you like to try it out?" Li Yan said, watching him approach as he raised the brick in his hand.

"No, no, this should’ve been my fault for compensating your friend; it’s my main responsibility. If you beat me up, you’ll also have to compensate me, and you’ll be liable too..." The man, frightened, turned his body slightly, raising one hand to protect his head.

"Why?" Li Yan coldly asked.

"What why?"

"I’ll ask one last time—why?"

"What do you mean why? Fine, fine... I’ll say—"

The man looked bewildered and panicked. The two were already close enough for a close-range attack. Though visibly scared, he held his head defensively with one hand, appearing to shield his vision. With the other hand, he discreetly drew a knife, concealed by his body, and, speaking the words, turned around swiftly, aiming a stab at Li Yan’s chest!

"Ugh—"

A suppressed, deep muffled groan resounded, followed by the crisp sound of a dagger falling onto the rooftop.

Li Yan looked at the guy as if he were an idiot, guessing that the man thought he was just bluffing with a brick, not daring to really strike, or believed his speed, plus the sneak attack, could hit Li Yan before the brick came down. To his surprise, his wrist was relentlessly struck by the brick halfway through the stab.

After the first brick, Li Yan unceremoniously followed up with another, smashing it onto the man’s shoulder, instantly rendering one of his arms useless.

"Hiss—" The man gasped, beginning to reassess Li Yan.

"Don’t feel upset or rush into the pain; you broke my friend’s leg. That was just interest earlier; I’ll be taking one of your legs too!" As Li Yan spoke, he was already kicking out, directly sending the unsuspecting man sprawling onto the rooftop.

"I’ve already asked for the last time, do I still need to ask, damn it?" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Li Yan stomped on his chest, wielding the brick again, looking down at his legs, seemingly recalling which leg of Sun Hui was broken.

The man likely didn’t expect Li Yan to be such a tough character; his face changed. With only an injured hand, it wasn’t too bad, but if his leg were hurt, he wouldn’t be able to get away. The place was not far from where the collision with the truck occurred. The other side must have called the police. If they chased here, it wouldn’t just be a hit-and-run issue.

"I’ll tell you...!" He took a deep breath, then chuckled bitterly: "I didn’t mean to hit your friend; the target was you! I’m an assassin, someone paid for your life, wanting us to stage a traffic accident to kill you. I was just taking money to eliminate a disaster for him!"

Assassin... Li Yan laughed bitterly. If he wasn’t lying, he’s evidently an unranked assassin. In the Assassin Realm of the world, apart from a few A-level rookie assassins eager to succeed, or those fearless ones wanting to use him as a stepping stone, the S-level assassins with real power and qualification to challenge the King keep respectful distance. This unranked assassin, not even counting as C-level, dared to attempt to kill the King of Assassins. If this spreads in the Assassin Realm globally, he might actually become infamous.

"Who?" Li Yan asked again. Since they’re coming for him, they must be his enemy. An enemy who can hire assassins is not one he’ll keep around!

"What who? I don’t know! I’m an assassin; how could I leak information about the employer?" The assassin said proudly.

Li Yan swung the brick down; one of the assassin’s knees received it immediately!

"Oh—ah—" The assassin clenched his teeth but still groaned. Trying to struggle was fruitless as Li Yan pinned him down by his chest. "I’ve already told you!"

"Who wants to pay for my death?"

"Have the guts to smash me to death here! Our people won’t let you go, will hunt you daily for revenge!" The assassin yelled angrily.

"If you don’t speak, I’ll smash you to death. Next brick will hit your fingers... Even assassins, if scared, can call for help."

Watching Li Yan’s hand move, the assassin quickly shrunk his hand. Against someone who won’t budge, he felt helpless, had to take a step back and said, "I really don’t know! You don’t understand, we assassins won’t directly contact the employer, have no idea who they are, just know the target and reward."

"That’s for skilled assassins; with your level, it’s just jobs introduced through acquaintances. Worried whether you can get the final payment, you’d certainly figure out who it is." Li Yan asked casually. Though he hadn’t been through such a phase, he knew a little.

"How do you... think that?" The assassin wanted to say ’How do you know?’, but fearing he might give himself away, changed his words halfway.

Impatient, Li Yan raised the brick again, ready to strike the other leg.

The assassin jumped in fright; if both legs are broken, he wouldn’t be able to go downstairs, await capture here instead. "Wait!"

Li Yan stopped.

"I really..."

Seeing he was still like this, Li Yan brought the brick down, not breaking bones but causing unavoidable pain by hitting his thigh.

"Playing with me, huh? This is a warning; I’ll let you know whether your bones or my brick are tougher!"

"Bro! You see I’m not up to standard as an assassin; under your harsh interrogation, if I knew, why dare not to speak!" The assassin pleaded miserably, "I’m really just executing the task. The only one who might contact the employer is our ’Crow’ boss, Crow brother. Even if you beat me to death, I really don’t know!"

Li Yan’s brick pointed at him, the assassin was terrified, shivering all over, but couldn’t say a word.

At this point, Li Yan could believe he really didn’t know. "I’ll let you go back, deliver a message to your boss Crow brother, I want to meet him!"

"Alright, alright!"

"One more question, how did you know I’d be at that place at that time?" (To be continued. For more Chapters, visit www.qidian.com. Support the author and legal reading!)
