The First Legendary Demonic Scholar
Chapter 22: New Robes
"What do you need?" Hearing the cold voice of the shop owner, Shen Yuan did not freeze.
He has gotten used to the treatment of the servants, which was also a reason he visited this shop first.
Dragon And Phoenix Clothing Center.
Looking at the cold disgust in the eyes of the owner, Shen Yuan realized how correct his decision was.
Not just this man, but every shop owner would judge him by his clothes. They will only see him as a servant and deny him the good stuff even if he could afford it.
So the first thing he had to do was... adapt.
"I am here to purchase some fresh sets of clothes."
Shen Yuan’s words left the shopkeeper stunned. Servants did not usually spend their money on new clothes but saved them as much as they could.
’Ah, it’s already that time of the year. He should be in despair now.’ The fat shopkeeper thought Shen Yuan was trying to live the last days of his life in luxury. ’I can use this chance to swindle money out of him.’
The servants were required to wear their uniform while they were working. The offense is punishable by death. But once they were off duty, they could wear whatever they wanted.
It was also the reason Peng Ho and Shi Jin wore normal clothes most of the time.
With a greedy gleam in his eyes, the man led Shen Yuan inside.
The black-haired boy saw through his intentions with one glance but did not say anything.
"What kind of robes are you looking for?" The shopkeeper had stopped before the first pile of clothes that was hanging on the wall and said, "All of them should be in your price range."
’Those look even worse than my current robes.’ Shen Yuan thought to himself at the poor finish of the clothes hanging from the wall. It looked like they had been used by someone else.
Instead of answering to the shopkeeper, Shen Yuan walked around him only to feel a firm grip on his shoulder.
"Where are you going?" Seeing him walking deeper into the shop, the owner asked coldly. The grip of the man was firm, definitely not belonging to a normal human.
’He is as powerful as Zhi Wei,’ Shen Yuan thought to himself, feeling the power of the grip holding him down, and slowly turned to look the man in the eyes. He took the hand holding his shoulder and tightened his grip around it, slowly taking it off.
The coldness in his eyes scared the owner of the shop as he hurriedly pulled his hands away from Shen Yuan’s grip.
’What?’ The man thought as he stumbled a little, ’How is he so strong?’ This is not just any servant. He might as well just become a senior servant.’
The disdain in his eyes morphed into fear. The difference between the statuses of junior servants was like heaven and earth.
’I cannot afford to offend this man.’ Realizing the cold truth, the shopkeeper suddenly curved his straight back and put on a flattering smile, rubbing his palm together. "Ah, forgive my rudeness, customer. Please let me guide you to the real stuff."
Shen Yuan merely stared at the man blankly, letting his back be covered in a layer of thick sweat as his fat oozed.
The man started to fluster. "Please, this way."
Without even waiting for Shen Yuan, he lowered his head and rushed past him as if someone were chasing him on a dark night.
He stopped before a wall where three robes were hanging, spread out, to clearly display their grand appearance.
The first was dyed in an azure blue shade. It’s tailored from silk so fine it seems to absorb light. There was golden embroidery on the shoulders of the robes reaching the strap on the waist.
The second robe was in faded red, a bit lackluster. But it had sturdy padding sewn in the vital parts of the body.
When the shopkeeper saw Shen Yuan looking at this robe weirdly, he explained. "This robe is perfectly fit for taking hits. There are not many of this piece, and it is popular among male disciples for specific adventures, If you know what I mean.
Shen Yuan felt weird at being winked at by a fat middle-aged man, but he understood what he was saying. The servants of the demonic sect had weird hobbies. Some even tried to spy on female servants in their baths.
When caught, this robe prevents them from being kicked into impotence.
"What about this one?" Shen Yuan turned to the final piece and asked. He did not even have to think deeply about it since he already had his mind fixed on it.
Even so, he did not let it show on his face. The shopkeeper turned to the final piece.
The outer robe was black in color, matching his raven hair. It was well-made—you could tell by the seams, which were nearly invisible, and by how the fabric draped even while hanging still. High collar, wide sleeves. It was traditional and also stylish.
The black was matched by a white inner robe visible at the neckline and wrists. The belt was black with a work of golden thread in the middle. The golden thread matched the markings on the white inner robe and the edge of the black outer layer.
Even though the colors were a bit faded, the material seemed to be pristine and quite expensive.
There were also accessories along with the clothes. A silver-white silk hairband that matched the outfit well.
"125 Grids. The custom fitting is included in the price, just for you. If you want to make other changes to the robe, that will cost extra." The owner opened his mouth and directly asked for a price that left Shen Yuan stunned.
"How many days of labor is that?" He was not sure if he could even afford it if not for the money he had loo—acquired from Zhu Wei.
"I will take it but for 100 coins." This was the first time Shen Yuan was bargaining for something.
The shopkeeper put on a reluctant expression as he rubbed the material of the cloth. "I am almost taking a loss on that deal... but if it’s for a promising customer like you, I’ll do it." He turned to look at Shen Yuan with a smile that may look forced, but the glint in his eyes was not, and said, "I am sure I can work with it."
It did not take him a minute to pack everything up and set Shen Yuan on his way before he could change his mind or realize what had just happened.
