The Kingmaker System
Chapter 541 - 540. Even A Dragon Falls Sick (4)
The silence stretched between Davian and Sol before Sol finally spoke.
"What do you think of Ocean?"
Davian blinked, caught off guard. His lips parted, but he quickly gathered himself.
"He’s... like a guardian to me," he said softly. "He stayed by my side when I felt like I had no one. I’ve told you this before, Sol—in this world, after my parents, the only man I can entrust my life to is Master."
Sol’s eyes softened, but only for a fleeting moment before his gaze returned to Ocean’s slumbering form.
"And what will you do," Sol began, his tone slow and deliberate, "when you realise..."
He trailed off, letting the words hang in the air. Davian leaned forward, searching Sol’s expression.
"When I realise what?" he pressed.
Sol didn’t answer immediately. His hand rested lightly on Ocean’s arm, the smallest of gestures betraying the care he kept hidden behind his stoic facade.
"Ocean needs someone by his side," he said at last. "Someone strong enough to shoulder the weight with him. It isn’t something Kai or I can do—not yet. And I don’t trust anyone else." His eyes lifted back to Davian’s, steady and unflinching.
"So I’ll ask this of you."
Davian’s breath caught. Sol rarely asked for anything. To hear such words carried a gravity that made his chest tighten.
"I’ve never made a request to anyone apart from one person before..." Sol said, his voice almost solemn, "but I’ll make this request to you, Davian. If you truly respect him—if you truly care—then stay by his side. Even if someday you feel like he’s betrayed you."
Davian froze.
"Betrayed me? Master?" he repeated, as though the words themselves were absurd. Then he let out a nervous chuckle, shaking his head.
"Is that even possible? Master has done so much for me—why would he betray me? And with what?"
Sol did not smile, nor did he soften his expression. His gaze stayed fixed, dark and steady, as if weighing the young man before him.
"It’s not exactly a betrayal," he said quietly. "But... you may feel it like one."
Davian stiffened, his brows furrowing. Betrayal? From Ocean? The very thought was absurd. And yet, the seriousness in Sol’s tone dug into him like a thorn. He tried to shake it off, but the words lingered.
His mind churned. Ocean had always been his anchor—the man who never lied to him, never turned him away no matter how troublesome his demands. Still, he couldn’t deny it... Ocean’s answers always came readily, but there was something beneath, hidden in the folds of his calm voice and unreadable smile. A depth Davian could never quite reach.
Davian looked back at his Master, his hand tightening slightly around Ocean’s pale fingers. A stubborn warmth filled his chest, pushing back the unease Sol’s words stirred in him.
"It’s fine," Davian said at last, a faint smile curving his lips. "If I ask Master, he’ll just tell me. He always does."
Sol stared at Davian, wondering how could this man become so blind when it came to Ocean. Did he subconsciously have feelings for Reina’s other identity as well?
That would become complicated though.
Sol felt himself dozing off after sitting there for a while and eventually he fell asleep with Davian sitting beside Ocean for a long moment.
Davian still wondered why Sol often talked to him about Ocean’s secret. It was as if he was dropping hints and wanted Davian to somehow figure out the mystery but he wasn’t following that trail that Sol left. He just waited in his spot until Ocean himself would allow for his mystery to be revealed. After all forcing anything out of Ocean was hard, considering he was ignored for 5 years straight after he had pushed Ocean away once.
He didn’t want to push Ocean this time, he would gladly wait and wouldn’t feel bad even if Ocean kept his secret from his for all his life.
After a while, Davian scooped Sol’s sleeping form in his arms before he glanced at Ocean and then left the room.
At night after dinner, Kai and Sol along with Davian and the others who knew of Ocean’s condition were in Sol’s room again to watch over Ocean.
"The fever has gone down." Doc said.
"But why isn’t he awake yet?" Remi asked. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
Doc shook his head before he looked at Sol.
"It’s fine, since the fever is broken he will be awake soon." He spoke and everyone looked relieved.
"Then, I guess we all can rest easy and prepare for a feast since Master would be famished the moment he wakes up." Enora said making everyone chuckle.
Soon enough, everyone left the room except for Sol, Kai and Davian, Roan looked a little hesitant as he looked at Davian and then at the other two.
"Um, Young Master Kai?" He called him over.
Kai walked towards Roan and Roan three one cautious glance at Davian who looked right at home beside Ocean.
"I’ve been meaning to ask you this before but why is Prince Davian here though? You said you included him in the plan so..."
He glanced at Ocean, "Does he know about Master’s real identity?"
Kai shook his head.
"No, Sol knew Davian won’t be fooled so we kept Master’s earstud on so that when Davian comes he won’t know anything." Kai whispered and Roan nodded.
"Well, whatever you do, just don’t let him know of Master’s real identity." Roan hissed and Kai nodded.
"Don’t worry, Sol and I will take care of it." Kai assured him.
Roan nodded before he observed Davian who nursed Ocean as if he was meant to do that without any mind of status or anything and ran his hand through his hair. He was quite on edge after watching Ocean collapsed like that that for a moment he couldn’t help but think for what might happen if Ocean one day did collapse and wouldn’t wake up. What will happen of Oasis and the people then?
Everything that Ocean had built might not stay on its feet after he would be gone, nobody else was currently strong enough to shoulder that weight. So, it was hard to imagine their future without him.
Roan walked out of Sol’s room and then proceeded to sneak out an hard liquor bottle from his secret collection and went over to his room. He poured himself some drink and sat silently as he drank.
After about half a bottle, he was starting to feel as if his vision was halfway swimming and his rationality had already left the room. Then he heard a knock on the door and he staggered to his feet before he walked over to the door.
When he opened it, he saw Remi standing there looking at him with raised eyebrows.
"Remi?" He slurred and the man sighed before stepping inside the room.
Remi looked at the bottle and glass on the table before looking at Roan who looked like he was barely able to stand on his feet.
"Master is currently sick and you are getting yourself drunk, Mr Roan." Remi spoke but then his eyes widened as he felt Roan’s arms wrap around his waist and his face resting over his shoulder.
Remi stilled as he felt the heat from Roan’s body seeping into his, his breath had the bittersweet scent of the liquor and he seemed as if he was holding onto Remi for the life.
Remi felt his heart slowly pick its pace as he gently placed his hand over Roan’s arm.
"M-Mr Roan?" He spoke and then heard Roan’s voice which surprised him.
Back in Sol’s room, Sol and Davian sat on Ocean’s sides respectively. Kai had fallen asleep and Sol sat on the bed while Davian was on the armchair.
"You should head back to your room now, Davian." Sol said as he noticed that it was past the midnight.
"I’m fine, besides, I can’t leave you three alone like this." He said with a smile instead, "You should sleep now, Sol. You must be tried."
Sol sighed looking at Ocean’s face before he lay down between Ocean and Kai.
Davian pulled the blanket on both Sol and Kai before he took his seat back on the armchair.
The snowstorm blew outside and Davian sat awake watching over the three sleeping Dragons. After a couple of minutes, he also dozed off while resting his cheek over his knuckles with his elbow on the armrest.
The storm kept blowing until it finally receeded and Davian’s hand slipped from under his face and he nearly fell before he caught himself and rubbed his eyes.
He sighed and then turned his eyes over to the bed but instantly his eyes went wide as instead of three he could only see two Dragons. Ocean was not in the bed.
He quickly rose to his feet and was about to call for Ocean but then he heard the sleek voice speak calmly from behind him.
"The kids are asleep, Your Highness,"
When he turned he saw Ocean’s form standing near the closed windows with the sunlight slowly seeping into the room illuminating his form.
A smile graced his breathtaking features and for a moment, Davian felt as if his heart had just came to a stop.
"Good morning, Prince Davian."
For a moment, Davian couldn’t believe his eyes and his feet moved of their own accord before he reached in front of Ocean, who stood in front of him.
Without a word, he reached out and touched Ocean’s cheek, the cool and smooth skin met with his and he stared unto the mesmerizing eyes.
"It’s not a dream, I’m awake." Ocean spoke and Davian felt a strange sensation in his chest, it swung between relief and pain.
Before he knew it, Davian threw his arms around Ocean’s neck, Ocean was surprised for a moment before he chuckled and placed his hands over Davian’s back.
"I’m sorry for worrying you all... But I’m fine... now that I’ve made my decision too."
