Chapter 26: Fall Of The Ariel Capital [4]

Everything starts to fade away as I find myself back in the chapel, hunched over the hunter from before. He wasn’t moving anymore so it is safe to assume I finished him off.

CRACKLE!!!

It sounds like the whole place is starting to fall apart here... Probably best to go and find Lia.

With that I left behind the chapel; eventually making it to a rooftop where I could see a bit more of what’s happening. A lot more soliders were marching through the streets than before.

Some carried flags, others various swords, axes, and even spears. Rifleman stayed a bit further behind them so they also have range against enemies.

I don’t think the Remi’s troops can handle the fight against Lumiel with the amount of people they sent here. This whole thing was destined to be a win from the moment they blasted through the walls.

It’ll definitely be a good idea to ask Lia or Amelia a bit more about the strengths of the other capitals. I need to know how strong Lumiel really is since I’ll be planning to take them down at some point.

But I think Ariel really is done for... No coming back from the slaughter they are bringing to the people who didn’t evacuate.

Maybe King Remi made it out with his wife and might have found the routes his people took. I don’t know if that’ll be the case or if he has a different way to go.

This whole thing is a mess regardless of how you look at it.

"Look at that, the chapel is burning," a voice says from below.

I look down towards the road in front of the chapel to see more soldiers huddled around the entrance. Each one surprised by the destruction of the place.

"Wasn’t a hunter inside?" A soldier questions.

"Either he was the one who set it, or he died in there fighting the person who actually lit the fire. I haven’t seen Hans in awhile though," another soldier responds. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"I’m sure he’s tracking down a vampire or something," The first soldier says calmly.

If only they knew what happened to Hans inside of the chapel... Not that it matters if they find out. Then again, it would’ve been nice to see a look of despair from these assholes.

They could probably use it with everything going on. It might even make them back off a bit, actually no it wouldn’t. There is an army of them so the confidence must be through the roof.

I take a look towards the castle to see if it is still holding up and surprisingly it is. There are soldiers marching up the steps currently but I’m sure the king is gone already.

Airships are also hovering right above the castle as well; They really don’t expect the king to make it out of there but I believe he will.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

I can feel my heartbeat starting to calm down a bit, maybe the adrenaline is also wearing off finally. The feeling from earlier is definitely gone so I don’t know when I’ll experience it again.

My eyes immediately are drawn back to my arm to see if the scales from before are there but they aren’t.

I was so focused on seeing what was happening all around the capital that I didn’t think about the power. The scales from before were pretty unique.

They helped stop my bleeding and even seem to provide a layer of protection.

If this comes from my family... I really wonder what would’ve happened if we weren’t so peaceful. I guess I’ll be the one to test that out since I don’t plan to keep the peace with the humans anymore.

"Mel?"

"Mel??"

"Mel?!?!"

Damnit I don’t know what I’ll do about her yet since she didn’t seem like a threat at the time and even helped me get used to things for a couple months.

I know she’s human as well and so is Amelia... At least they both seem to be human. Remi said he found her when she was little and took her in as his own.

He never mentioned where he found her or if she was anything other than human. Would he even want to know?

I don’t think he would’ve cared if she was human or not since he protected everyone here, regardless of what race they are. Only if more Remi’s existed back then.

Maybe the hunters wouldn’t have formed in the first place.

Footsteps march below me as soldiers continue to talk, interrupting my train of thought.

"Did we ever find the girl?" A soldier asks.

"The princess? No, of course we didn’t find her. She is probably long gone at this point," Another soldier answers.

Would they have kept her alive? I don’t really want to know what their plans were for her since they were killing everyone else. The princesses fate might’ve been way worse if they got to her.

Her personal guard is also a mystery. Why would he just abandon her? The king would’ve had someone by her side that he can trust no matter what.

Did he really run off or did this guy play the role of a rat?

Before I could draw my sword I feel cold steel press up against my neck, there was no footsteps or even the sound of the blade being drawn.

"Are you one of them?" A familiar voice asks.

"One of who?" I respond while keeping a calm tone.

"Lumiel’s men," He says with a serious tone.

"I just killed a bunch of them and a hunter, so I’d say no," I reply.

The blade moves away from my neck and I can actually hear the footsteps back up a bit.

"Then I won’t kill you or get in the way," He says with a laid back tone now.

I turn around to see the man from the guild standing there, except he is covered in a bit of blood. Probably from killing off random soldiers that are lurking around the streets.

"Zerif right?" I ask to confirm.

"Yes. We met briefly when I covered for you and the elf girl," He responds, keeping the same laid back tone from before.

"Well thanks for not stabbing me in the neck," I say before moving towards the edge.

"No problem," He replies.

Footsteps start to go the opposite direction before disappearing entirely. It is safe to assume he is gone.

Time for me to make my way to the wall.
