The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!
Chapter 503 - 495: Responsibility
How could Gu Yifeng not be worried about this? But there was simply no other way. The Imperial Physician over there had already said that the person was currently struck down due to anger, and they would have to wait until they woke up to know the extent of the situation.
Moreover, if the person remains in a foul mood after waking up, it could aggravate the illness.
Thinking of these things, Gu Yifeng couldn’t help but worry, his sharp brows tightly furrowed. Lin Youning grabbed his hand, "Big Brother, Aunt is ill right now, you must stay calm. Only your words will carry weight with her."
Gu Yifeng nodded. The two of them hadn’t been sitting long in the East Mansion when Li Si came to deliver a message, saying the old madam had woken up but couldn’t move. She could only utter sounds like ’ah ah ah,’ and no one could get close; she was flailing her arms about.
Gu Yifeng stood up, and Lin Youning followed him off the soft couch. "Big Brother, let me come too."
She knew why her big brother didn’t want her to go; it was because he was worried she’d run into Gu Er, who might say those things again. But so what? She hadn’t done anything wrong in the first place, so why should she avoid Gu Er?
Lin Youning looked at her big brother with determination. Gu Yifeng saw her determined look and knew it was impossible to stop her, so he nodded, "When we get there, stay with me and don’t get separated."
Lin Youning obediently nodded, "Don’t worry, I’ll listen to you."
When the two arrived at Shi’an Garden, they saw Mrs. Gu Sr. throwing a tantrum; no one could get close. Things were thrown everywhere, anything she could reach was tossed to the ground.
Gu Er and Princess Yuanhua stood at a distance, while Nanny Chi and the others were still trying to get closer.
But their approach only provoked Mrs. Gu Sr. more, making it impossible for them to get nearer.
Gu Yifeng and Lin Youning arrived together, relieving Nanny Chi and the others. Suyi directed the maids to clean up the mess on the floor, while Gu Yifeng approached the bed.
However, he did not touch Mrs. Gu Sr.; he simply began to speak, "Mother, the Imperial Physician has already said that if you calm down and recuperate properly, you can get out of bed on your own. But if you keep this up, it will only worsen your condition."
Mrs. Gu Sr.’s hands, which had been flailing in the air, finally stopped. Gu Yifeng sighed and gently held her hands, "Mother, Sister Ning is here too. She’s pregnant and most worried about you. For the sake of the child she’s carrying, don’t you think you should reassure her?"
Gu Yifeng slowly placed his mother’s arms back on the bed, "I’ve asked Sister Ning to come over so you can touch her belly. We will be counting on you to help with the child in the future; mother needs to take good care of herself."
Mrs. Gu Sr. remained silent, but Gu Yifeng knew she had listened. Lin Youning, without being called by her big brother, stepped forward quickly. When Mrs. Gu Sr.’s hand touched Sister Ning’s belly, she finally couldn’t help but curse.
Lin Youning’s eyes reddened. She comforted, "Aunt, you will get better. We just need to take care of you properly."
"Get... get them... out," Mrs. Gu Sr.’s sobbing finally quieted down enough for her to say her first words.
Even if it was just one sentence, everyone in the room understood whom Mrs. Gu Sr. was referring to.
Princess Yuanhua’s expression remained unchanged, but Gu Er’s face darkened. He said angrily, "I told you not to let Mrs. Kong come, but you insisted. Now you’ve ended up like this and blame us. It’s simply unfair."
"And as for big brother, what doesn’t he know? He must be aware of Mrs. Kong’s pregnancy, yet he kept it from you. Now you hold it against us. Mother, why do you have to be so biased?" The more Gu Er spoke, the more agitated he became, raising his voice considerably.
The room was silent; only his voice echoed.
"Leave." Gu Yifeng said just two words, but they carried an undeniable coldness.
"Second Young Master, let’s go back for now and not cause the old madam any more distress. It’s not too late to visit in a few days," Princess Yuanhua suggested, giving Gu Er a way out.
Gu Er nodded, not because he was thinking of coming back in a few days, but because his big brother had genuinely scared him. He still remembered the last time he angered his brother, he was punished to kneel in the courtyard for so long that his legs nearly stopped working.
So Gu Er dared not continue and took the opportunity Princess Yuanhua offered to leave with a show of reluctance, flicking his sleeves in anger as he exited.
With these two gone, Lin Youning finally sighed in relief. "Nanny Chi, prepare some porridge that Aunt likes, and I’ve heard there’s a type of chair now that can be sat in and pushed around. We should get one for Aunt."
"I heard Mr. Wu invented it," Suyi chimed in. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Lin Youning nodded, "Only she could think of something like that. Then have someone go to the Wu Mansion and let her know."
Suyi responded and left.
Nanny Chi and Nanny Chang also sensibly retreated to the kitchen.
With no outsiders in the room, Gu Yifeng finally spoke, "I did know about Mrs. Kong’s pregnancy, but I knew even if I stopped her, mother would still insist on letting her come to the mansion."
Mrs. Gu Sr. remained silent on the bed, tears flowing as she stared at her son. Lin Youning pulled out a handkerchief to gently wipe her tears, "Aunt, Mrs. Kong deliberately said those things to upset you. Why let yourself get so angry and give her the satisfaction?"
Mrs. Gu Sr. simply stared at her son, and Gu Yifeng sighed, "She’s a concubine at Prince Xian Mansion. Mother, do you want me to stand up for you? But you should know this only happened because she got to you; otherwise, you wouldn’t be so upset. However, I can promise mother, if the opportunity arises in the future, I will help you vent this frustration."
Beside them, Lin Youning suddenly realized that this was what Aunt had been silently asking of her big brother.
Mrs. Gu Sr.’s eyes widened, clearly disagreeing, but Lin Youning understood her big brother wasn’t someone who spoke untruthfully, so she quickly interjected, "Aunt, the new year is just months away. You are ill, and how can big brother focus on anything else now? Besides, if something happened to Mrs. Kong right after your incident, we would be the first suspect. It would be better to wait until after the new year when your health is better. What does Aunt think?"
Mrs. Gu Sr.’s eyes rolled, which seemed to indicate agreement.
Lin Youning finally felt a sense of relief on her face.
