The Smiling Death
Chapter 436: He Never Tried to Seduce Her!!
"Well... that... I..." Amon was at a loss for words. He genuinely didn’t know what to say right now.
With her ears slightly red, Seraphina raised her voice once again, something very unlike her usual self. "Father! That’s enough. It’s not what you think!!!"
"What enough—!" Bertram tried to continue, but his father interrupted him before he could finish.
With a calm expression, Alistair spoke, "Bertram, that’s enough. Selena came here as a guest to enjoy their winter holiday. And Amon came to meet his friend after a long time. Let them eat calmly. Don’t ruined the moment."
Bertram clicked his tongue. "Tch! What kind of winter holiday? Our city and the capital city don’t even have that much cold weather anyway. They shouldn’t give this holidays."
It was the twelfth month of the year 1236.
It was winter season, but it wasn’t like the entire country experienced harsh cold. There was no snowfall here. Only slightly chilly weather at night. At least for strong people, it wasn’t cold enough to matter much.
Amon easily got distracted and went into deep thought.
’Professor Adelia’s family territory and even Arnold’s family’s territory are on the northern side. So their places might actually have snowfall.’
Finally, Selena spoke with a composed expression, "If it’s okay now, can we eat our breakfast, Uncle Bertram?"
Bertram let out a sigh and nodded. "Oh yes. Let’s put that topic aside for now. I will talk about it later. Eat first."
Amon immediately felt relieved.
Though he still realized he would probably have to talk with Seraphina’s father again later.
Leaning slightly closer to him, Selena whispered into his ear, "Don’t worry. I will take care of it."
Hearing her words, Amon suddenly had the urge to hug Selena and yell thank you with tears in his eyes.
But he somehow controlled himself.
He looked at the breakfast spread in front of him.
There were many kinds of food, but he decided to pick normal things first.
Fresh white bread made from fine wheat, buttered rolls, honey cakes, sweet pastries filled with berries and cream, sugar-glazed bread, roasted sausages, boiled quail eggs, and fruits such as sweet grapes, apples, and pears.
Amon picked up a piece of sugar-glazed bread and took a bite.
The sweet flavor spread across his tongue as he chewed on it happily.
Without any shame, he continued trying different dishes one after another.
While eating elegantly, Bertram turned toward Selena and asked, "By the way, Selena. How is Sister Celestia doing?"
Selena swallowed her food first before replying calmly, "She’s doing good. Just annoyed sometimes because of paperwork."
Bertram nodded with a small smile. "Yeah, I can understand that."
Then his gaze shifted toward Amon again.
With curiosity in his eyes, he asked, "But I’m wondering... how did you become friends with such a commoner boy?"
Obviously, Amon, who was fully focused on enjoying the food, didn’t care much about the question.
Selena answered casually, "Well, you do remember I survived in that town with one of my juniors, right? It was Amon who was with me. Did you forget his name?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Bertram blinked once before realization appeared on his face. "Ah! Now I remember. I forgot the name. So that’s why you’re close with him. Was he with you these past few days too? Living in the royal palace?"
Selena nodded. "Yes, he was."
Bertram frowned slightly. "Hmm... so Sister Celestia didn’t mind it?"
Alistair chuckled softly from the side. "She’s not like you, Bertram."
Bertram immediately defended himself. "What? Hey, I’m not against having my daughter’s friend stay at my house even if they are commoners. But how can I allow it if they’re of the opposite gender? How did Sister Celestia not mind when her daughter brought a man to the royal palace?"
This time, Amon himself replied.
With a confident expression, he said, "It’s because Her Majesty actually cares about me. We are kind of close."
Silence.
The entire table went quiet.
Everyone looked at him with surprise.
Even Selena was slightly taken aback.
Of course, Amon was completely lying.
He himself didn’t know why he suddenly said that.
Maybe he simply thought it would make things easier for him here.
After a moment, Selena nodded calmly. "Yes, he is close with Mother. He came with me to the royal palace at the start of the year and met Mother back then. So they are kind of close."
Bertram stared at Selena with wide eyes as if he had just heard the most ridiculous thing imaginable.
Alistair also looked surprised now.
At first, when Amon made that claim, he thought the young man was simply joking around.
But after hearing Selena confirm it, even he wasn’t sure anymore.
"Huh... I thought the young man was merely joking," Alistair admitted with an amused smile. "But now that you also said this, I’m not sure anymore."
Lucia looked genuinely impressed. "Oh? Then this young man must be amazing to be able to get closer to Her Majesty."
Seraphina nodded without hesitation. "Yes, he is."
She herself didn’t know whether it was fully true or not, but she simply decided to go along with the flow.
Bertram still looked unconvinced.
"Well... how is that even possible?" he asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyes at Amon.
Amon smirked proudly. "How? Of course because I am so handsome and charming. What other reason could there be?"
Silence filled the table once more.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Bertram slowly turned toward Selena with an expression that clearly said he had no idea what to do with this boy.
With a tired sigh, he muttered, "This young man sure is delusional. But where does he get so much confidence to say he’s handsome with such a straight face? As if he’s telling the truth."
Selena chuckled lightly. "Haha... well, I don’t know. That’s just how he is."
Amon felt personally offended by Duke Luminous calling a handsome man delusional.
Still, he didn’t show it outwardly.
Instead, he calmly added, "Also, Sir Bertram. I already have a very beautiful lover. So please don’t worry about me trying to seduce your daughter. She is just my close friend. Nothing else."
Bertram blinked. "Wait. Really?"
Alistair simply watched everything calmly with a small amused smile, clearly enjoying the family drama unfolding before him.
Even Seraphina looked surprised after hearing that.
Selena once again shook her head helplessly.
She already knew there was no way Amon wouldn’t bring this up.
For him, having a girlfriend had basically become something he wanted to proudly show off to everyone.
Bertram carefully studied Amon’s expression.
After a while, the suspicion in his eyes slowly faded.
"You don’t seem to be lying."
Amon was indeed speaking honestly this time.
There wasn’t even the slightest hint of deceit in his expression.
Bertram finally relaxed slightly and sighed. "Hah... good to hear that."
Curiously, Seraphina turned toward Amon. "When did that happen, Amon? You didn’t tell me."
Amon chuckled awkwardly. "Hehe... it’s a long story."
Then Seraphina suddenly asked with an innocent expression, "Is she Professor Adelia? I mean, you used to spend a lot of time with her at the academy and even flirt with her."
Cough!
Amon nearly choked on his food.
Meanwhile, Selena completely lost it.
"Hahahaha!" Even the usually calm princess burst into loud laughter.
Bertram’s eyes widened once again in absolute shock.
Even Lucia covered her mouth elegantly in disbelief. "Oh my... flirting with his teacher."
Bertram immediately exploded.
"Boy, are you insane?!" he shouted. "Flirting with Professor Adelia means flirting with a lady from the Evangeline household! Are you serious?! Is that woman the one you are calling your lover?! Do you even understand what that means?!"
Panicking, Amon waved his hands rapidly. "Hey!! She’s not! She’s not! My lover is someone else!!"
Then he quickly turned toward Seraphina.
"Sera, don’t say things like that out of nowhere. I will tell you about it later in detail."
Seraphina simply nodded.
She honestly hadn’t expected such an intense reaction from everyone.
For nobles, the master-disciple and teacher-student relationship was considered sacred and highly respected.
Of course they would react strongly.
Still looking suspicious, Bertram asked, "Then who is it?"
Amon answered honestly this time.
"She’s the woman I met on the island when I was lost there."
Bertram finally looked satisfied.
"Oh... so that’s how it is."
For the first time since breakfast started, the strict Duke Luminous finally calmed down completely.
