Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Night

During this time, the doctor the Old Beastman had called for a house visit arrived. However, worried he might disturb Jiang Zheyu, the Old Beastman didn’t let him in and sent him away.

"It’s done." Jiang Zheyu withdrew the hand that had been holding the man’s. Her small, fair hand vanished into her black robes, her entire figure concealed by the garment.

The Old Beastman had been watching the entire time, terrified something might go wrong. But as he saw the expression on his son’s face gradually soften, he finally began to relax.

Then, his eyes fell on the Beastification Value monitor on Lai Ka’s wrist. He was stunned to see that the value, which had been 87, had dropped to zero.

His pupils contracted. He stared at the robed figure in disbelief, but all he could see beneath the wide hood was a grotesque, smiling white mask.

"Confirm that the treatment was successful, and remember to send the payment."

Jiang Zheyu’s voice was still the mechanical, androgynous sound processed by her Light Brain.

With that, she turned and headed for the door.

"Aren’t—aren’t you afraid we won’t pay?" While the Old Beastman might have harbored doubts about the robed figure’s treatment before, seeing the Beastification Value hit zero dispelled them completely.

Jiang Zheyu paused mid-stride. ’I never planned on taking their money anyway. That’s why I told them to request the payment from my public identity. This way, the money just circles back to me, and the Old Beastman and his son don’t actually lose anything.’

But of course, she couldn’t say that out loud.

"If you dare to default on the payment," Jiang Zheyu’s androgynous, Light Brain-processed voice echoed slowly in the small house, "then what I have healed, I will personally take back."

She only said it to stay in character as the mysterious robed figure.

With that said, Jiang Zheyu left the house.

As soon as the robed figure was gone, the Old Beastman rushed to check on Lai Ka.

The blood on the handsome but haggard young man’s face had dried. He now lay quietly on the bed, his eyes closed.

Before, his brow had always been furrowed, and his sleep was never peaceful, as if he were constantly trapped in a nightmare.

But now, he slept soundly, his brow smooth, seemingly free from any pain or affliction.

The Old Beastman checked Lai Ka’s Light Brain and saw that his heartbeat and breathing were normal. He hadn’t passed away.

Tears he could no longer hold back streamed from his cloudy eyes.

The Old Beastman wiped his tears. He desperately wanted to find the robed figure and thank them, but they were already long gone and impossible to find, so he had to let the idea go.

He thought about the two million Star Coins the robed figure had requested. He opened his Light Brain, and when he saw the female’s contact information, his expression filled with disgust. ’If it weren’t for these vicious females, my son would never have ended up like this, nor would he have had to suffer the daily agony of his damaged spiritual power.’

Although the Old Beastman despised Jiang Zheyu as a female, he still sent her a message: "Honorable female, my son requires a treatment fee of two million Star Coins. I must trouble you to transfer it to me."

Jiang Zheyu left the outer city without incident. Once she was inside the Imperial City Inner City, she changed out of her black robes.

She was now discovering just how useful the system really was. For instance, she could store the robes she’d taken off in the system backpack. ’It’s no different from having my own personal storage space.’ 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

"System, you’re so useful. Why didn’t you tell me about this?" Jiang Zheyu grumbled. She always had to ask the system if a function existed before it would confirm it for her.

’This system has no self-awareness at all.’

"The system is very useful. It is up to the host to explore its functions," the system replied.

Jiang Zheyu was speechless.

In short, the system might have what Jiang Zheyu wanted, or it might not. She would only find out by asking.

She made a mental note of it. After changing out of her black robes in a public restroom, she checked her Light Brain. It was already 10:20 PM.

There were many new messages on her Light Brain.

Su Yan had already tried calling her several times on her Light Brain, and he had sent a ton of messages.

Su Yan: Yu Yu, where did you go?

Su Yan: Yu Yu, please answer me. I’m worried about you.

Jiang Zheyu hurriedly replied, "A yuan, I went out to look for a job. Don’t worry, I’m okay. I’m on my way back now."

A holographic call from her Light Brain came in almost immediately.

Jiang Zheyu was still in the restroom, so it wasn’t a good place to take the call. She decided to answer it once she was outside.

As she walked out of the restroom, she didn’t answer the holographic call. Meanwhile, Su Yan kept calling and sending her messages simultaneously.

Su Yan: Where are you? I’ll come get you.

Jiang Zheyu quickened her pace. ’This feels like I’ve been out all night fooling around and now my husband is catching me in the act.’

Come to think of it, she had met two Beastmen today.

’And both of them are interested in me! The more I think about it, the more the shoe fits!’

She quickly shook her head, trying to banish the thought.

After walking out of the restroom, Jiang Zheyu was just about to answer the holographic call when the screen suddenly went black.

She blinked in surprise. ’No way, is Su Yan that impatient? Did he really hang up that fast?’

’That’s not right. Su Yan isn’t like that.’

As she thought this, she looked down at her Light Brain and found that the entire device seemed to have crashed, its screen turning into a mess of static like a short-circuiting black-and-white television.

The next second, her Light Brain lost its signal completely, and the screen went dead!

Jiang Zheyu realized something was wrong. Usually, interference with a Light Brain’s magnetic field was caused by one of two things: a malicious jammer or a poor signal, like in the mountains. But this was clearly neither of those.

But there was another possibility: the Zerg Race had appeared nearby and was disrupting the area’s magnetic field.

Jiang Zheyu’s spiritual power, which had fully recovered just three or four minutes after she performed the Spiritual Comfort, suddenly felt hazy and unstable.

Her hazel eyes widened slightly as she stared at the buildings in front of her. They seemed to sway and distort, creating a bizarre, surreal scene.

She even felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

A large, slender hand covered her eyes.

"Put up your Spiritual Barrier."

A man’s cold voice sounded beside her ear.

Jiang Zheyu heard the voice. It sounded vaguely familiar.

Moreover, as the man drew closer, the dizziness in her head began to subside.

But she subconsciously asked, "How do I put up a Spiritual Barrier?"

The man seemed to pause for a moment. A faint, breathy chuckle escaped his lips. "Concentrate your spiritual power and use it to enclose your Spiritual Domain."

Jiang Zheyu did as he instructed. She vaguely understood—it was like creating an enclosed space, just as she had done within Su Yan’s Spiritual Domain before.

"Okay, it’s done." Jiang Zheyu grasped the man’s hand with both of hers, trying to pull it away.

The man allowed her to pull his hand away, but in the same motion, he took hold of hers.

Jiang Zheyu saw Feng Qi, dressed in a black military uniform.

"Jiang Yuyu, this place is about to get very dangerous." Feng Qi looked down at her. "That Su Yan fellow is really slacking on the job. How could he let you be out here alone so late? Why don’t you leave him and be with me instead?"
