Transmigrated as a Stepmother: Time to Bring the Family to Prosper!
Chapter 628: Brazen Fiend, Return My Sister
Given the mouth that eats, Qin Yao hadn’t had time to give the money for that sumptuous dinner to Qin Feng, and Uncle Qi had already arrived.
He started by giving a pack of candies to each of the four children, including Yin Le, who wasn’t left out and was treated the same as the kids.
Then he handed Ah Wang and Liu Ji each a peace charm, claiming they were obtained from a great master, only two left, and they could ensure a smooth career path.
Uncle Qi, having given gifts, enthusiastically extended an invitation for a vegetarian meal at Qingyun Temple the next day at noon.
He specifically mentioned, "Honestly, in my entire life, I’ve visited countless temples and Daoist temples, but when it comes to vegetarian meals, nothing beats those at Qingyun Temple outside Wu City. The stir-fried greens are crunchy and delicious, grown by the Daoists themselves at the Three Pure Ones Pool’s youngest shoots, blah blah blah..."
Having just had a big meal, the three adults and four children gulped successfully.
The children curiously asked, "Can vegetables be grown in water? We’ve never seen that before!"
"The Daoists have great powers; growing vegetables in water is nothing. The yellow dragon in the tree is truly marvelous!" Uncle Qi began to chatter endlessly.
Soon after, Qin Yao noticed everyone around her saying, "Let’s go, let’s go," and sighed helplessly. Even though her heart strongly resisted, she nodded when Uncle Qi invited her again sincerely, "Let’s go."
She wanted to see what Qin Feng and his servant really intended to do.
Liu Ji cheerfully saw Uncle Qi off and then dismissed all unrelated people, leaving only the couple inside the room.
He sidled over to the table, sat next to Qin Yao, and his polite smile receded into a thoughtful look, "Wife, what do you think they insist on taking us to the Daoist Temple for?"
"Don’t get me wrong, my dear. It’s not that I just want to eat that excellent vegetarian meal, that’s why I agreed to Manager Qi. I’m just curious about what they want to do. Could it be they’re finding an opportunity to reunite with you?"
Qin Yao glanced at him with interest, "That Qin Feng is incredibly wealthy. Given your nature, I would find it strange if you didn’t hurry to please such a big brother-in-law." Why does he look a bit guilty?
Liu Ji inwardly complained, isn’t it because he’s afraid this woman will reveal her true self!
But he said aloud, "Am I really such a superficial person who only cares about wealth? Actually, I noticed my wife seems to have some unspeakable reasons that make you unwilling to recognize them, fearing it might be awkward then."
"It’s alright, what will come, will come." At this point, Qin Yao seemed rather calm.
Tomorrow, as long as Qin Feng dared to ask, she dared to answer.
"By the way." She suddenly looked at him with a teasing smile on her lips, her tone suddenly becoming mysterious as she leaned into his ear, "Don’t you have anything to ask me, Liu Ji?"
After she murmured those ghost-like words, she returned to her place and calmly looked at him.
Liu Ji’s heart suddenly jumped; it almost leapt out of his throat, his eyes widened instantly.
His lips trembled twice, as if he really wanted to ask, after all, such an opportunity might only come once in a lifetime.
However, just as "Who are you, really?" rolled on his tongue, he quickly bit his teeth, stood up shaking his head, and said, "It’s late, my dear, get some rest early, I’m going to bed too, goodbye, goodnight!"
With that, he almost fled the room, as if for his life.
Qin Yao chuckled softly, tch, coward.
But from this reaction, he surely has long suspected her identity, perhaps from his perspective, he thought she might be a ghost possessed.
Living with a ghost daily, he’s not afraid?
Qin Yao shrugged, suddenly feeling that coward couldn’t be used to describe him.
Just wondering what Qin Feng’s reaction would be upon finding out she’s a ghost tomorrow.
What to do, she’s a bit looking forward to her identity being revealed, after all, living under someone else’s identity and skin has been uncomfortable.
Yin Le led Si Niang into the room, both turning their heads and glancing outside as they entered, faces full of suspicion.
"Mother, what’s wrong with Father? Why is he walking so wobbly?" Si Niang ran up to mother, hugging her arm like a spoiled child, burying her face in her shoulder and rubbing against it.
Qin Yao shrugged, "I don’t know either. After digesting, let’s sleep."
Yin Le and Si Niang nodded, bolted the door, and laid out the bedding. Originally it was meant for Yin Le, but Si Niang found it novel and insisted on squeezing in with her on the floor, while Qin Yao happily accepted the entire big bed.
Qin Yao slept well through the night, feeling refreshed.
Liu Ji looked weary, his eyes bloodshot, with dark circles under his eyes.
"Did you steal chickens in the middle of the night?" Qin Yao asked.
Liu Ji shook his head weakly, "Had a nightmare."
He dreamt one moment she was burned, then another Qin Feng transformed into a ghost chasing them, shouting fiercely, "Brazen demon, give me back my sister!"
Scared him so much that he dared not sleep, lying awake till dawn.
But such a matter doesn’t need to be known by too many people.
Qin Yao thought Liu Ji was alone, unexpectedly, Qin Feng was even worse, not only with dark circles and bloodshot eyes but also looked pale, as if sucked dry by some monster.
Uncle Qi glanced over unexpectedly, almost dropping the bowl of soup in his hands, quickly placed it on the table, and went over to Qin Feng concernedly to ask:
"Master, are you alright? Should I get a doctor, and rest another night?"
Qin Feng waved his hand weakly, "No problem, just a nightmare."
Still worried, Uncle Qi hurriedly served him a bowl of chicken soup stewed with wild ginseng, "To replenish your qi and blood, perhaps too many surprises on the road recently have exhausted you."
Qin Feng gave a nod, obediently drained the big bowl of chicken soup in one go, feeling a little more energized.
Ever since Uncle Qi came back last night and told him that everything was arranged and Qin Yao’s family had agreed to go to the temple for the vegetarian meal, he had been filled with joy, anticipation, and fear after returning to his room.
As a result, he dreamt dream after dream, one nested within another, never fully awake.
Until at dawn, when a rooster crowed, breaking free from that endless nightmare.
Awakening, he still seemed to hear the young Ah Yao happily calling to him from atop the jujube tree, "Knowing brother is still alive, makes Ah Yao happy."
So, how could his Ah Yao, upon seeing her brother, not reunite?
Qin Feng glanced at the woman at the neighboring table with her back to him. She was so clever, she must have guessed the purpose of his invitation to the temple, yet why was she so unperturbed?
He merely thought about the standoff between the two in the temple, and he was already nervous enough to induce nightmares.
But look at her, eating heartily like nothing’s wrong, enjoying it more than anyone else.
Moreover, she seemed to enjoy the wild ginseng chicken soup he had instructed the inn’s kitchen to prepare overnight, just like when Ah Yao was a child.
After gulping down two large bowls of chicken soup and not even leaving the ginseng in the pot, Qin Yao then savored each unfamiliar dish on the table, before finally wiping her mouth and exclaiming blissfully, "Ah~, it’s delicious!"
