Chapter 25: Zero

Chapter 25: Zero

I emerged at 6 AM with 523 EXP, and with a shoulder that wasn’t throbbing anymore, around three hours into my time in the dungeon, probably because the nerve stopped caring rather than because my body healed the injury.

It was early enough. Vendors starting to set up stalls, cloth district empty, the grey light of dawn filtering through the buildings. I opened Lyra’s monitoring window as soon as I stepped out of the dungeon.

PASSIVE MONITORING — LYRA

Relationship / Daren: 612 — stable

Corruption: 0/100

Mood flag: Disoriented / Searching

Active interaction: NONE

Vorn contact: no new entries

No contacts. No corruption. And disoriented now became searching, which meant that the side-effect progressed to the next stage – blankness, then realization that something is missing, and finally searching for that something.

I went to the cloth district.

She was there, but inactive.

It was the first impression I had once I got there. The cloth stacks were arranged differently compared to yesterday, only partially put in place, showing that she had left something unfinished before she decided to stop. She stood with her arms hanging limply by her sides, looking at the street without seeing anything.

As soon as I approached her, I checked her UI. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

LYRA — STATUS

Corruption: 0/100

Mood flag: Disoriented / Searching / Unsettled

Trust threshold / Kai: 61 — stable

Processing: active — source unknown

Note: Character currently undergoing post-reversal disorientation — normal duration 4-6 hours

Four to six hours. Since the reversal last night at 4 AM, that’s how long it had been. It was about two, three hours into the search phase now. Disoriented meant she was searching for the cause of whatever feeling she was having.

She looked up when I approached.

"Kai." Surprised? More like she was waiting for somebody to come along, and I happened to be the one.

"Good morning," I said. "You seem tired."

"I slept well," she replied. "I just—" She paused, her hands moving in that familiar way she had when she was figuring something out but hadn’t found words for it yet. "I feel strange today. Something has shifted and I can’t find what."

Post-reversal disorientation. Character experiencing the lack of corruption track built over weeks. She did not recall the visits by Vorn. She did not recall the fourteen recorded contacts, the growing presence, the presence of him in her mind as a constant element. It was just gone, and the place where it used to be felt wrong in ways that could not be put into words.

"Strange how?" I asked.

"Lighter," she replied. "But that’s not the word. It’s just different. As if I’ve been holding on to something and laid it down without knowing when I picked it up."

That is precisely what had occurred.

I leaned against the stall post and said nothing.

"Sometimes that happens," I said. "After a tough period. You don’t even realize the weight of it until it’s lifted."

She gave me a specific stare she had been giving me since the trust threshold surpassed 60 — not one of suspicion, but one of discernment, trying to determine what knowledge I possessed regarding her feelings.

LYRA — FLAG UPDATE

Mood: Disoriented / Searching / Settling

Trust threshold / Kai: 61 → 64

Processing: reduced — partial resolution

64. Three points as I stood there saying hardly anything. The dizziness was settling on me as a point of orientation, something familiar, someone who could be trusted, her mind focusing on the safety flag as an orientation point, while everything else seemed to lose its moorings.

And I would have to be very cautious about that.

But then my peripheral vision caught the ping of the overlay icon in the corner.

VORN — FLAG UPDATE

Lyra metrics check: ATTEMPTED

Result: DATA UNAVAILABLE

Lyra corruption status: [BLANK]

Vorn contact log: [BLANK]

Point of No Return: [NOT FOUND]

Assessment: CRITICAL — data loss detected

Response flag: active investigation initiated

Current location: Ashveil Market — approaching cloth district

Approaching cloth district.

I glanced at the distance indicator.

Sixty meters. Not rushing, walking calmly, but heading somewhere definite.

He’d done his check on the metrics, discovered nothing, and started moving. Less than two minutes from when the blank had appeared until he started walking towards Lyra’s stall. This was not a man who panicked – this was a man who had plans B through E in place and was now executing plan B.

I straightened from the stall position.

"Lyra," I called out. "Daren? Has he mentioned when he’ll be returning from his run today?"

The subject blinked in response to the change of topic. "Noon, he said. Why?"

"He didn’t say why," I responded, keeping my tone relaxed. "But he would like to know if you are having trouble."

LYRA — FLAG UPDATE

Mood: Settling / Warmer

Processing: Daren — positive association present

Trust threshold / Kai: 64 — stable

Excellent. She was processing positively towards Daren. When Vorn came and found her processing positively on Daren, she wouldn’t be the same target as the one he left alone at 99 percent corruption.

Forty meters.

I glanced down at the overlay.

VORN — FLAG UPDATE

Distance: 40 meters

Pace: steady

Assessment flag: active

Objective: determine status of Lyra personally

Objective two: identify data loss

Objective two. Identify source of data loss. Vorn was not simply coming to check on Lyra, he was coming because he needed to know what was going wrong with his metrics. I was there at her stall at 6 AM after doing a night run, either a coincidence for him or a variable to track.

Variable to track.

Twenty meters.

Had two options. Leave before he showed up and give him access to Lyra alone with her lost and confused. Or stay and become whatever he was seeking at the stall.

I stayed.

Vorn rounded the corner of the fabric district as someone who knew their way around. No hurry. No tell. He saw me first and not Lyra and only a slight tweak behind the eyes tipped me off that he was recalculating something.

His overlay flags flipped.

VORN — ASSESSMENT UPDATE

Location of Kai: Lyra’s stall — present

Time frame: early morning, after night run

Probability of coincidence: 12%

Assessment: Kai is the source variable

Confidence: 87%

Eighty-seven percent. He had identified me in under three seconds of visual observation. Blank data, zero log file, no point of no return – he might not know how yet but he knew who.

He stopped at the edge of the stall. Looked at Lyra.

"Morning," he said. Simple. Relaxed. The voice of someone who belonged here.

Lyra looked at him. I watched her screen.

LYRA — FLAG UPDATE

Recognition attempt: processing

Result: partial — recognizable face, no context available

Mood: Uncertain

Partial recognition. He was someone she knew, at least vaguely, though the details, the context, the fourteen instances of interaction leading up to his ambient presence had vanished along with the log itself.

"Good morning," she said. Courteous. Unremarkable. The voice of someone greeting a stranger who might be familiar.

Some shift passed through Vorn’s face. Subtle. Almost imperceptible. Too quick to miss, but not quick enough to escape notice.

VORN — FLAG UPDATE

Recognition response: partial

Recognition phase: reset

Log contact confirm: deleted

Assessment: full reverse reaction confirmed — external factor

Redirected contact request to Kai

His eyes met mine.

Mine met his.

"Kai," he said.

"Vorn," I said.

The vendors in the cloth quarter were beginning to open their stalls. The first customers were beginning to wander in. Nothing remarkable about two strangers meeting eyes in a marketplace in the morning. Nothing out of place about two people sharing an absolute certainty about the recent exchange that had taken place between them.

VORN — FLAG UPDATE

Confrontation: pending

Timing: not here — public, witnessed, no leverage

New contact window: private — today

Note: variable has escalated to become opposition

Threat level: CONFIRMED OPPONENT

Confirmed opponent. Not variable. Not interference. Opponent.

He held it for two seconds then gave me a brief, definitive nod – the kind of nod you give when you’re filing something away forever – and walked back the same way he came.

Neatly done. No confrontation. Nothing new there.

Except, this time, the flag on my overlay was different than it had ever been before.

VORN — STATUS UPDATE

Primary target: Lyra — SUSPENDED indefinitely

Secondary target: Daren — active, ongoing

Third-level response: Kai — direct engagement pending

Timeline: today

Direct engagement pending. Today.

I looked over at Lyra who was looking at the spot Vorn had just stood at with that same confused expression of someone who can’t quite remember where they met a stranger’s face before.

"Who was that?" she asked.

"An acquaintance from the dungeon circuit," I told her. "No worries."

She took that as sufficient explanation and moved to sorting through her bolts of cloth again.

LYRA — STATUS UPDATE

Corruption: 0/100

Mood flag: Settling / Focused

Disorientation: resolved

Trust threshold / Kai: 64 — stable

Vorn contact: no entries — log clear

Zero. Clean. Holding.

I pushed off the stall post and checked the time and checked the overlay and started walking.

Vorn wanted to engage me directly today. I had 523 EXP, a cheat system I’d recently verified I would actively utilize, and an actual enemy flag for the first time in the entire narrative.
