VRMMO: World's First Glyphborne
Chapter 275: The Impending Doom
Whilst Vestra was enthralled with her new book, uncovering secrets that only she would know for the moment, Revenant took control of the conversation once again.
"How can you be so... lax about all of this? You spoke to a god, and not just any god, you spoke to the Goddess of Trickery! Queen of Thieves, creator of the undead scourge. She might not be the worst of them, but she’s definitely up there of all the gods I would definitely not want to mess with."
"Really? I didn’t think she was so bad. A bit scatter brained and weird, but that’s kind of relatable. She seemed more mischievous than anything else." Belladonna replied with a shrug,
"I really don’t see what the big deal is."
To her side, Saige rolled his eyes and cut in before Revenant decided to tear Belladonna’s head off, which had a very real chance of happening at this point.
"Is it possible that the gods knowing about what we discussed could impact the plan or even alter the future."
Revenant glanced at him, before letting out a heavy sigh and flopping back into his seat,
"Honestly, I don’t know. In my time, we never actually found out what caused the inciting incidents. I know when they appear and where, I even know what they are, although that has a possibility to change.
But we never actually found out why these creatures came across. Whether it was an intentional attack by some otherworldly force, or if it was simply a matter of the barriers between worlds breaking down. Either way though, that leaves Sylvi as the first to blame."
"Why do you say that? What makes you so sure it’s her fault?" Belladonna couldn’t help but ask, glancing at Vestra for a moment to check her reaction, but the girl was too lost in her new book to pay attention.
Revenant sighed again, "Sylvi is arguably one of the more diverse gods, as if she couldn’t decide what she wanted to precide over, or simply picked up the left overs. Amongst her domains, are the barriers between worlds.
The afterlife, the material plane, spiritual plane, and so forth are separated from each other not by physical barriers but illusions. Fields of mist that clouds each realm from seeing each other.
If you ask the people of this world what happens when you die, they would tell you that you find yourself in a world of fog and mist, like an eternal dream, that they are guided through by the Lord of the dead. However sometimes the Lady of the Lost decides to keep them there, tricking them with memories of the living world, until they stumble back to the world of the living as an undead.
That’s how you get things like the spirits that we fought." He explained, nodding to Belladonna.
Biting her lip, Belladonna considered his words. It didn’t take a genius to understand that the realm he was describing, the endless dream of mist and fog, was the realm that she had wandered into.
"So you’re suggesting that she tricked some beasts and led them across her domain into our world... for fun?" Belladonna asked after a few moments of silence.
"It’s possible..." Revenant answered with a shrug, "It’s even more possible that she will do it now, considering what she has learned from us. Or it could be that something else forced its way through her domain to our world, however if that was the case she would definitely know. Wouldn’t you notice someone tunnelling straight through your house?"
"Is it possible that she didn’t know?" Saige asked, steepling his fingers and leaning on the table. "I mean I understand that it could all be a trick, but it does seem like she is trying to help us, no? Or at least isn’t trying to stop us."
Revenant glanced at him, opening his mouth to answer, before considering it for a few seconds and eventually answering with an exasperated sigh.
"I mean... I guess, but that just means it was one of the other gods that did it. Either way, we can’t trust them. Not even your beast god." He said, directing his last comment towards Saige himself.
Saige frowned, looking down as he thought it over, fighting with the concept in his head. He clearly did not like this outcome, for a multitude of reasons, but he could not find anything of merit to argue with beyond irrational feelings.
Lilith, sensing his emotional turmoil, immediately reached over and gave him some consolatory head pats and scratches behind the ears. She also had to do the same to Gaia a moment after, so the baby dragon stopped pouting in jealousy.
"So, I know you said ’the secret is going to be out’ within the next few days," Figg began, finally contributing to the conversation after his prolonged pouting session,
"But how long do you think we have until the monsters start coming through? Because... well... some of us might need a little more time to prepare than others and it will be nice to have as much time as possible."
Revenant glanced at him with a serious stink eye, before rolling his eyes and answering,
"Hard to say. With all the changes that have been happening, and still not knowing the true cause, it could be happening any day now. Originally we had a few weeks after the secret was out, before anyone in the real world started to change race, but I can’t say for certain now. I will be keeping an ear out for the markers, however we should be preparing for combat as if it will be happening tomorrow."
Figg paled at the realisation and let out an audible gulp, before whipping his head towards Belladonna and smiling widely,
"So my address is 216 Ma- Actually you know what, I’ll message it to you. Would hate for you to forget it right? Ugh can you imagine all these delightful crystals going to the wrong address? That would be... that would be... haha..." Figg laughed half heartedly, picking up a handful of the crystals and squeezing them tight in his hand, while wearing a crazed and worry filled smile. It was almost as if he thought that if he let them go, he would die in that very moment.
