When the Saintess Arrives, No King Exist
Chapter 937 - 888: Battle of Dusk Bell Mountain (Part 2) (Double-Length Chapter)
The battle at Chest Wall No. 3 and No. 4 is raging on, but over at Chest Wall No. 6, the soldiers are still fervently digging.
Soldiers wield shovels and pickaxes, excavating circular pits over a meter deep.
These pits could potentially impede infantry attacks... but what is their purpose here?
Even though they do not understand, the soldiers obediently continue their work.
"Will that side be able to hold?" A dusty-faced Captain Bai runs over, anxiously whispering to Corps Commander Rubeer.
Rubeer casts a side glance at him: "Stepping out of line, I should whip you twice."
"Rubeer, old brother, shouldn't we send some support over there?"
Seeing his persistence, Rubeer's eyebrows rise: "Didn't you pay attention in orders class? Did Lord Mengse give any orders?"
"...No."
"What is the duty of the War Monk?"
The Captain Bai half-opened his mouth: "...Obey orders."
"What are our orders?"
"Hold firm."
Involuntarily, Rubeer's gaze shifts toward the direction of the middle chest wall, secretly clutching the corner of his garment.
"So are we just going to stand here?" As soon as the Captain Bai finished speaking, Rubeer slammed his knuckles on Bai's helmet.
"Dangβ"
"Ouch, what did you do that for?"
Rubeer ignored him and tightened the strap beneath his chin: "You jinx!"
The Captain Bai is momentarily stunned and glances at the battlefield, feeling an electric jolt run through him.
Through the rolling dust, nearly four hundred knights in ten flag groups surge forth.
"What are you dawdling for?" Rubeer kicks him on the rear, "Get back in line, Holy Gunmen, prepare!" πππππ¨π²πππ¨π―ππ.ππΌπΊ
Under the blazing sun, the thrush emitted a weak yet sharp call.
Unlike usual, the call failed to draw much attention, instead only the sharp swoosh sounds echoed across the bleak green-yellow plains.
The thrush, feeling challenged, ruffled its feathers, let out a piercing call, and swooped down.
"Swooshβthud!"
Blood and feathers burst in the air, fluttering, until caught by the whirlwind created by the knights and blown high again.
"Knights, our comrades have already shed their blood and proven their honor!"
Tadrashe drew out an amber-encrusted longsword, its gold hilt shining brightly under the sun.
"Now, it's our turn!"
Bugle calls and drumbeats resounded within the small space, and five diamond-shaped cavalry formations galloped once again across the grassland.
Three formations roamed the outskirts, attempting to attack and intimidate the Imperial Guard behind the chest wall.
Behind the chest wall, the Holy Gunmen fired in succession, reaping the heads of knights like the scythe of Death God.
Two diamond formations, totaling more than 150 knights in four flag groups, collided at the breach in the infantry passage.
It's almost a reenactment of the Chest Wall No. 3 scene, but Rubeer's side lacks the support of the spring cannon from the central chest wall.
A sufficient number of adept Border Knights dismounted, facing long spears and holy guns, hacking away at sharp stakes, and destroying the chest wall.
It's undeniable that in front of these Extraordinary Knights, perhaps only the mortar chest walls could withstand their brute force.
This chest wall, compacted between two planks with rammed earth, could barely resist and was quickly breached.
"Hawkeye Minex! Damn it, I told you to go to the left, the left!"
"Fifth and Sixth Long Spear Teams, take a step forward, move move move!"
"Holy Gunmen alternate retreat, Long Spearman cover!"
"Watch out, Corps Commander!"
Rubeer rolled clumsily on the ground, half-kneeling to catch the longsword of an elite knight with his feathered spear just in time.
Nearby, two Long Spearmen immediately took a heavy step forward, [Thrust] quickly, piercing the knight's body from both sides.
The knight spat blood, his longsword losing strength, as his body convulsed and fell to the ground.
"Corps Commander, are you okay."
Helped up by soldiers, Rubeer's attention remained focused on the battlefield.
On our side, there are only four falcon cannons; lacking the spring cannon's support, the losses of the Guard Fifth Corps are quite severe.
The casualties aren't enormous, but the rate at which the defense line is dismantled far exceeds Chest Wall No. 3 and No. 4.
If things go on like this, it won't be long before I'm unable to hold out!
With a sudden swish, Rubeer felt a warmth near his ear.
Touching it, he found that a flying fragment had sliced off half of his earlobe, leaving only a thin layer of skin connected.
"Damn it." Clutching his ear, Rubeer tears off the earlobe with a ripping sound and tosses it aside, gripping his feathered spear with reddened eyes, "Even if we can't hold, we mustβ the Imperial Guard has never retreated without orders, I won't be the first!"
As Rubeer is about to heroically fight the knights, he hears a messenger shouting, "Is Corps Commander Rubeer here?"
"I am!"
"I'm Hilier from the Seventh Corps, the adjutant has been killed by stray arrows... I'm taking over..." The blonde young man gasps, "Hide in the soldier pits... alternate retreat."
"What are you taking over? Retreat what?" Listening to the breathless speech of the blonde young man, Rubeer's expression turns sour.
"Please alternate retreat to the sides and rear, vacating enough space."
"The front is fiercely engaged, you take over." Rubeer thrusts the Military Chaplain forward, "I'll lead the rear guard, the others withdraw orderly."
"You don't need to rear guard, please come to the back together later..."
At this heated moment, Rubeer angrily curses: "Are you telling me to abandon those fighting soldiers? If I leave, they'll have to sacrifice themselves as rearguard, is that acceptable?"
