Witch, Fireball and the Evil God of Steam
Chapter 1065 - 257: Old Friends
"The rebels have blown up the starport. The starships of the Holy City Navy and the pirate joint forces are hovering over the First Special District. It won’t be long before they possibly commence orbital bombardment on the ground, hmm hmm..."
Lindong savored the grilled chicken thigh burger, not noticing the grease on the corner of her mouth as she casually stated the worst-case scenario.
The Department of Justice and the Sanctuary of Logic have become the last line of defense, while the Chief Prosecutor and the Archbishop stared in shock at the illustrious First Seat Lady.
"Fries."
Interrupted halfway, she coquettishly said to Ethan, "Dip them in more ketchup."
Is this truly the voice of the First Seat?
Everyone witnessing the scene couldn’t believe their eyes; for a moment, they suspected that what stood before them was a malfunctioning super artificial intelligence. The First Seat Lady had created numerous super AIs with appearances identical to hers for managing lab work, making it almost impossible to tell them apart by looks or speech.
Besides the First Seat Lady’s technical prowess being close to indistinguishable from reality, her perpetually cold expression contributed to the ambiguity.
No one in the Holy City had ever seen the First Seat Lady smile before.
But today, ever since she received the burger meal prepared by Ethan, her upturned lips never ceased.
"The Origin Society also participated in the rebellion. The Seventh Seat provided technical support to the rebels, implanting something in their brains that allowed their thoughts to evade the Lord of the Holy City’s insight."
Upon hearing this, the Chief Prosecutor and the Archbishop exchanged glances, seeing awkwardness in each other’s eyes.
The Lord of the Holy City himself was present, and they felt saying such things before Him might be considered sacrilegious. However, judging by the Holy City’s Lord personally preparing Lindong’s meal, their relationship seemed far more complex, and they dared not judge hastily.
"If that’s the case, we should immediately enact the emergency provisional act, temporarily consolidating the family’s military authority under the temporary strategic command center!"
Vedis, the Archbishop, was a solemn and serious woman, undeterred by the emotional dynamics between Lindong and Ethan. Clearly, a greater crisis was at hand. "If the Origin Society has joined the rebellion, perhaps they also possess the keys to disable the First Special District’s defense systems!"
In her view, both the family and the High-tier Council were beyond redemption.
Should the rebels conduct an orbital bombardment on the surface, those involved could be blasted along with their political games and power struggles, which wouldn’t be a bad thing.
However, Vedis did not intend for the entire Sanctuary to be buried with them.
"Isn’t that even better?"
Lindong calmly vetoed Vedis’s suggestion, believing that if the rebels could help eradicate the cancerous elements, it would be a perfect outcome.
As she spoke, she glanced at Ethan.
Just as Vedis said, the High-tier Council was beyond saving. Yet, she didn’t want Ethan to carry the stigma of executioner or terrorist. Fortunately, during the stalemate, the talented young Seventh Seat emerged from nowhere.
Though Lindong couldn’t remember the Seventh Seat’s name, it didn’t hinder her desire to reward him with a small red flower.
This was why she remained unfazed by his arrogant words before her, even endorsing his academic achievements as the First Seat upon departure, supporting him to succeed the Second Seat’s position. In her view, the Holy City now required such a pioneering young individual to deliver a painful lesson to the High-tier Council and the family. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"But the cost is too great!"
The Chief Prosecutor, despite the odds, stepped forward to assert his stance. Everyone knew the members of the Origin Society were madmen; if left unchecked, their civilization would have perished in frenzy.
"Orbital bombardment is likely to utterly destroy the planet’s surface, erasing everything we’ve built here."
Apart from material loss, many symbolic elements would be obliterated in the bombardment.
He knew the First Seat Lady had little regard for these, but considering they still had rebuilding tasks upon repelling the rebels, the spiritual totems sustaining the galaxy must not waver. Over time, it’s the belief in the Holy Master that has united countless worlds. Any crack in this belief, even if they executed the rebellious Navy Marshal and the pirate gang leaders, would make stable governance difficult.
Subsequently, more rebellions would sprout across worlds, and the Edge World might fall out of control.
The Chief Prosecutor sensed that this moment could be a critical juncture for the civilization’s survival.
"I know you’ve long grown weary of the High-tier Council’s political games, but sometimes, we still need them."
The Chief Prosecutor declared firmly, even if he knew this might displease the First Seat Lady, but as the Department of Justice’s leader, he must fulfill his duties at such a crucial time.
In trivial matters, he could maneuver opportunistically, even resorting to flattery, but when facing calamity threatening the Holy City, he was ready to stake his life at any moment.
