Chapter 327: Chapter 69: Morning Star Bell

"This boy, Lucian... he’s young and inexperienced, but he’s a diligent worker and meticulous. I can’t say he’s exceptionally bright, but his strengths are that he’s eager to learn and knows his place."

"I’ve been so bold as to bring him here today to ask, My Lord, My Lady, if you might give him a chance. Let him stay by my side and begin by learning the rules and affairs of the castle, inside and out."

"At my age, I can’t promise much else, but if I guide him for a few years, teach him everything he needs to know and watch out for, then in the future... perhaps he can take up this mantle and continue to serve the Monte family, to serve you, My Lord and My Lady."

The moment Old Bernard finished speaking, Lucian stepped forward and bowed deeply, his posture even more reverent than before. His voice was clear, but with a slight tremor.

"Lucian greets you, My Lord, and you, My Lady. Since I was a child, I have listened to the teachings of my grandfather and father, and I know the depth of the Monte family’s grace. To be able to serve you, My Lord and My Lady, is the greatest blessing and duty of my life. I know that I am slow and inexperienced, but I will do everything in my power to diligently learn my grandfather’s skills. I would never dare to be lazy or make the slightest mistake. I implore you, My Lord and My Lady, to grant me this kindness and allow me to remain in the castle to learn and serve!"

His forehead nearly touched his knees as he held the deep bow.

Aurora said to Bernard, "Bernard, you have been with us for so many years. We know better than anyone of your hard work and loyalty. It is a good thing that you have been so thoughtful, wanting Lucian to succeed you and continue this bond of friendship and duty to the family. We are nothing but pleased."

As she spoke, she looked toward Murphy.

Murphy’s calm gaze swept over Lucian, then he gave Aurora a slight nod of agreement.

With Murphy’s silent approval, Aurora turned to Lucian, who was still holding his bow. "Lucian, since your grandfather has recommended you and you yourself have the heart for it, you may stay. Starting tomorrow, you will follow your grandfather. Watch much, listen much, and ask much."

"Your grandfather knows everything best—the affairs inside and outside the castle, the social customs, the management of goods, and even some of my and the Lord’s habits. You must learn diligently and familiarize yourself with it all as quickly as possible."

An excited flush instantly spread across Lucian’s face. He almost bowed deeply again, his voice brimming with irrepressible joy and gratitude. "Yes! Thank you, My Lady! Thank you for your grace, My Lord! I will be sure to remember My Lady’s teachings and will never fail my grandfather’s expectations or your trust, My Lord and My Lady!"

Old Bernard also let out a visible sigh of relief. The deep wrinkles on his face smoothed out considerably, and he broke into a gratified and relieved smile. "Thank you, My Lady. Thank you, My Lord, for indulging this old servant’s selfish wish. Lucian, hurry up and give your thanks, then take your leave. Don’t continue to disturb the Lord and Lady while they discuss important matters."

Lucian quickly complied. He bowed respectfully to Murphy and Aurora one more time before following his grandfather, maintaining a proper distance. He carefully backed out of the study and very gently pulled the heavy oak door shut.

Once again, only Murphy and Aurora were left in the study, along with the secret letter from the Holy City lying on the polished surface of the desk.

Aurora’s gaze didn’t leave the secret letter. She was silent for a moment before turning to face Murphy.

"Brother," she finally said, her voice soft, "what should we do now?"

Murphy’s gaze fell upon her face. His voice was calm.

"We watch and wait. With the canonization of a Saint, the Church Court is bound to have follow-up arrangements, and the Royal Family will also make a move. The Monte Territory is in the Northern Territory; we just need to maintain our own stability and not get too involved. Our relationships with Duke Douglas, Blackstone Fortress, and the Peric Clan should be maintained as they are. As for our dealings with the Church Court, we simply need to fulfill our duties as a Holy Protector."

But Aurora looked at him and slowly shook her head.

She took two steps forward, stopping on the other side of the desk. She placed her hands lightly on the edge, her gaze locked on Murphy’s calm eyes.

"That’s not what I’m talking about. You know that."

The study fell silent. Even the sound of the wind outside seemed to have ceased.

Murphy met her gaze, remaining silent, not answering immediately.

After a long moment, he finally spoke. "I don’t know."

Aurora pursed her lips slightly, as if she wanted to press the matter.

But Murphy suddenly spoke again. "What about the supplies I asked you to prepare?"

Aurora paused for a second, then realized what he was referring to.

"They’re all prepared. The herbs and minerals you listed have already been procured through our channels in various regions. The last two items are expected to arrive early next month."

She paused, then added, "The transport and storage of all supplies have been handled using the most discreet channels and identities. The books have also been properly managed so as not to attract any attention." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Listening, Murphy nodded slightly. "Good. You’ve worked hard, Aurora."

Aurora shook her head. "There’s no need to thank me, Brother. Your business has always been my business. It’s what I should do as your sister, and it’s the only thing I can do for you."
