70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman
Chapter 409 - 1: Worthy of First Place
Time quickly slipped by, and soon it was time for the New Year’s celebration. Xu Mumu practiced the choir performance a few times with her classmates.
As for Jiang Zhenghao and his comedy skit, they practiced really well. They had performed twice in class, leaving their classmates laughing so hard they couldn’t keep their mouths closed. Xu Mumu thought they would be the stars of the show as long as they didn’t get stage fright.
The script she wrote was fine-tuned by Jiang Zhenghao and the others, and the performance was quite compelling.
On the day of the New Year’s celebration, Xu Mumu carried her stool to the school’s playground since the whole school was attending, and the auditorium couldn’t accommodate so many people.
It was said that even some outside officials were coming to watch, so the preparation for the celebration was done quite thoroughly.
Their department was still some distance from the stage, but fortunately, she took good care of her eyesight. Even from afar, she could see everything on the stage clearly.
The choir was one of the first few performances. There was no uniform outfit; everyone was just asked to dress nicely.
After watching a couple of performances, Jiang Zhenghao led the group backstage to await their turn to sing.
There were fewer girls in the class, so just one row was enough for them to stand. In front, there was a male and female lead singer. Initially, Jiang Zhenghao wanted Xu Mumu to be the lead, but she refused. She could carry a tune but wasn’t a professional, and had issues with tone and rhythm.
So, the chosen lead singers were Shen Ya and a tall, sturdy boy.
When Shen Ya was first picked, she even showed off in front of Xu Mumu, but Xu Mumu didn’t pay her any mind, leaving Shen Ya with nothing to boast about.
When Su Yue’e heard about this, she teased Shen Ya in the dorm. Su Yue’e wasn’t on good terms with other girls in the dorm mainly because when she initially tried to befriend Xu Mumu, Shen Ya and others isolated the two of them.
Since then, Su Yue’e’s relationship with Shen Ya and the others soured, and she didn’t plan on mending it.
Shen Ya was a petty, vengeful person. After knowing what kind of person she was, Su Yue’e decided not to associate with them anymore.
Su Yue’e’s teasing made Shen Ya even more uncomfortable, but now that she was no match for Xu Mumu and Su Yue’e in every aspect, she had to endure it and was determined to shine at the New Year’s celebration by showing everyone how great she was.
Su Yue’e was busy with her studies every day and didn’t notice that Shen Ya had spent a lot of time practicing her singing recently, determined to do well in the lead singing part and achieve perfection.
Their department’s name was soon announced, and under the guidance of the two leads, they orderly walked onto the stage.
The song chosen for the choir was a revolutionary song. The collective singing by the class was quite impressive, although slightly off-key at times. Xu Mumu thought the result was pretty decent, considering they hadn’t spent much time rehearsing.
While Xu Mumu was content, Shen Ya was not very satisfied because she noticed a few off-key moments, especially during her lead sections.
After getting off the stage, her face was noticeably unhappy.
Back in her seat, Xu Mumu happily watched the various performances. There were many singing and dancing acts, with even more revolutionary songs. Such performances stayed within acceptable boundaries, causing no problems.
Those performances in singing and dancing were quite impressive, and even some comedy skits and operas were interesting.
Xu Mumu’s class also had a comedy skit scheduled later in the program. Around noon, it was finally time for them to perform, and the classmates immediately perked up. Even though they knew their show was excellent, everyone was a bit tired after watching so many acts. So, if others didn’t clap, they decided to promote themselves.
Very soon, Jiang Zhenghao and another boy went on stage. They even borrowed long robes, making them look quite the part.
The jokes Xu Mumu recalled were quite funny even in later years; otherwise, she wouldn’t have remembered them so clearly.
The jokes were hilarious, and the two did an excellent job managing the rhythm, constantly capturing the audience’s attention.
The pair didn’t have any stage fright and fully conveyed what Xu Mumu intended.
Listening to the skit on stage, everyone burst into laughter, and even after it ended, their mouths were still wide open.
From the front seat, the principal looked on with satisfaction as the two students walked off stage. He chatted with someone beside him, acknowledging how well-written the skit was. The person next to him also expressed great satisfaction. This was the spirit contemporary university students should embody—full of energy and vitality.
Thunderous applause erupted from the audience, and the students from Xu Mumu’s class were incredibly thrilled, their eyes filled with pride.
Yin Yang, also watching the New Year’s celebration, saw Jiang Zhenghao’s performance. She just gave a faint smile since these things were told to her by Xu Mumu in the small courtyard before. Although they were funny, hearing them a few times made them less amusing.
By noon, the performances finally concluded, and it could be said that Xu Mumu’s skit was very successful.
Walking back with Yin Yang, Xu Mumu kept overhearing discussions about how interesting her skit was, as people hadn’t seen anything like it before.
Hearing their discussions, Xu Mumu felt a bit proud, even though she had just copied them from modern times.
"Everyone’s talking about it," Xu Mumu exclaimed excitedly.
"Yes, you deserve the first prize," Yin Yang gently replied.
"Of course, just see who wrote it," Xu Mumu boasted.
"Yes, you’re the best."
When they got back, Xu Mumu was still bubbling with excitement and immediately shared the performance highlights with Madam Chen and the others.
Madam Chen and the others didn’t understand much, but they knew Xu Mumu and her class had won an award. Being awarded was impressive, and they were happy for their granddaughter.
Professor Song felt somewhat regretful that he had a medical check-up today and couldn’t attend the school event. If he had known it was so exciting, he would have gone—the check-up could’ve been delayed till the afternoon or the next day.
"Grandpa, I had someone record it on a camera. I’ll bring it to you in a few days so you can watch it at home," Yin Yang said with a smile, knowing they had a TV to view it on at home.
"That’s more like it. Mumu went up to perform, why didn’t you do a performance too?" Professor Song lamented again, thinking how they wouldn’t see Yin Yang on screen.
"I don’t have that much time to participate in performances. I need to spend more time studying." Yin Yang said, half-crying, half-laughing. He didn’t expect his grandfather to hope he’d perform—it was a wish Yin Yang probably couldn’t fulfill in this lifetime.
