Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Pain and Disappointment

As she walked out of the hotel, her phone rang. It was June Evans.

Sophia Shaw looked at the caller ID, a headache already forming.

The Evans family had probably found out Leah Evans hadn’t gone to work and were looking for her.

Sophia didn’t know what to say to June Evans, but she had no choice but to answer. "Aunt June."

June Evans’s voice was frantic. "Faye, get to the hospital, quick! Your grandma collapsed."

Sophia was so frightened the beauty mark by her eye seemed to tremble, and all the color drained from her lovely face.

Forgetting everything else, she started running toward the hospital.

When she reached the hospital, her grandmother had just been wheeled out of the emergency room.

Yancy Shaw and June Shaw were helping the medical staff push her into a private room.

"Grandma!"

Sophia Shaw cried out, rushing to her side.

"Faye." Seeing Sophia, her grandmother tremulously reached out a hand.

Sophia took it.

Her grandmother’s hand was thin and cold, the chill seeping relentlessly into her own palm.

The cold made her heart tremble. She couldn’t help but look at Yancy Shaw and June Evans. "Why did Grandma suddenly collapse?"

Yancy Shaw pursed his lips, silent. June Evans, however, burst out angrily, "Who else could it be but that vicious woman, Yvonne Sherman! She’s deliberately moved all her relatives into the villas surrounding ours."

"They’re always looking for trouble, doing everything they can to disrupt our lives! They won’t even leave an old woman alone!"

June Evans’s eyes were bloodshot, and her chest heaved. She was absolutely furious.

Her grandmother sighed softly. "I’m fine. Why upset Faye by telling her all this?"

"You say it’s nothing! The doctor just said you almost..."

June Evans couldn’t continue, her voice choking with sobs.

She and Yancy Shaw had been together for nearly twenty years. Feeling a sense of guilt, the grandmother treated her better than her own daughter.

Sophia Shaw gasped.

She had been suspicious when she saw Sharon Sherman’s family in the neighborhood before, but she never had the chance to ask about it.

’So they actually moved here.’

’And it’s not just Sharon Sherman’s family?’

Sophia looked at Yancy Shaw. "Since when were the houses around ours so easy to buy?"

The Shaw family’s villa wasn’t in an ultra-prime location where every inch of land was gold, but because it was built early, it was situated in the area with the best environment.

Most of the people who bought property here were early-generation tycoons, and they mostly used the homes for their own retirement. No one was willing to sell.

Even if a property occasionally went on the market, the price would be exorbitant. They were incredibly hard to come by, and you probably couldn’t get one without some connections.

"Easy to buy? Of course not. It was through Vin—" June Evans glanced hesitantly at the grandmother, ultimately stopping herself from saying the name.

But Sophia already knew. Her heart sank.

’Vincent Grant again!’

If Vincent Grant was involved, then nothing was surprising.

With his power, he could find enough properties even in the most difficult-to-buy areas.

’But he knows the Shaws and the Shermans have been feuding for years. He must know Yvonne Sherman is doing this for revenge, so why would he still help her?’

The beauty mark by her eye seemed to shimmer on her pale face.

Sophia silently curled her fingers into fists, but she still couldn’t control the waves of pain and disappointment washing over her.

Vincent Grant knew full well that the punishment shouldn’t extend to the family.

Even if he believed she was guilty, he shouldn’t have done this!

’But for Joanna Sherman’s sake, he’s thrown all his principles away. He won’t even spare the elderly!’

June Evans sighed softly. "Yvonne Sherman bought five villas in one go. Now, we’re completely surrounded by the Shermans."

"They haven’t even moved in yet, and they’re already ganging up on us. Who knows what it’ll be like once they’re actually living here."

It felt like her heart was shattering against her ribs. Sophia’s face grew even paler.

’Five families!’

’That means all of Yvonne Sherman’s close relatives have moved in!’

’She’s going to use these relatives to lay siege to the Shaws, to make our lives a living hell, a fate worse than death!’

Yvonne Sherman had always been vicious and shameless.

But Sophia never imagined she could be this venomous!

"Why didn’t you tell me about this before?"

Pain and anger spread through her chest. She looked at June Evans, who in turn looked at Yancy Shaw.

Sophia understood at once.

’Her uncle was afraid of putting her in a difficult position.’

’Afraid of making things hard for her, he would rather endure it, letting Vincent Grant indulge Yvonne Sherman and the Shermans as they bullied his family!’

Sophia’s heart ached for him.

Afraid of upsetting her grandmother, she fought back her tears.

’Her uncle always put her first.’

’He always had, and he still did!’

’For over a year, Joanna Sherman and her son have been using Vincent Grant to bully him, but he never said a single harsh word about it to me.’

’He wouldn’t even let his wife tell me when the company was being pushed to the brink of bankruptcy!’

The more she thought about it, the more upset she became, and tears began to stream down her face uncontrollably.

Sophia hated herself for being so weak and useless. She quickly turned away to wipe her tears.

"Don’t cry, don’t cry. If worst comes to worst, we’ll just move."

Seeing her tears, her grandmother quickly tried to comfort her.

She shakily reached out to pull her closer and wipe her tears away.

The cool, dry hand rested under her eye, and Sophia’s heart ached even more.

"That’s right, we can just move," Yancy Shaw added, gently patting her back.

His other hand was clenched into a tight fist, yet he forced a smile to reassure her.

Sophia saw it all, and her heart hurt even more.

Yancy Shaw had never been a weak or helpless man, especially when the Shermans had so shamelessly caused his own sister’s death.

But no matter how tough he was, how could he gamble with his own mother’s life?

And how could he put his sister’s only child in such an impossible situation?

His heart was brimming with hatred, but he had no choice but to swallow it all down!

June Evans also saw the hatred and helplessness in Yancy Shaw’s eyes. She felt the same towering resentment and surging hatred, but she understood her husband’s heart better than anyone.

So she could only bite her lip, her silence a sign of her reluctant agreement.

Sophia looked at her grandmother, then at Yancy Shaw, and then at June Evans.

An immense sorrow filled her heart.

’After those vicious people trampled all over my mother, now they’ve come to trample on the three people closest to me!’

’Isn’t there supposed to be karma?’

’Why do the wicked get to live better lives?’

’They live so freely, never worrying about their livelihood. They can bully people without facing any consequences because someone will always protect them!’

’They eat gourmet delicacies every day and use high-end skincare. A fifty-year-old looks no older than forty.’

’But what about my family?’

’Because of her daughter’s death, my grandmother has become gaunt and withered, and she’s cried so much she’s nearly blind!’

’My uncle isn’t even forty, but his hair is already white. He looks older than a man of sixty!’

’And Aunt June... she has suffered so much!’

’Why!’

’On what grounds!’

’I have to do something for my family, too.’

Sophia turned to her grandmother. "Grandma, you haven’t recovered yet. You need to rest well."

Her grandmother was still weak and had little energy, so she nodded obediently.

Sophia then said to Yancy Shaw and June Evans, "I’ll stay with Grandma. Uncle, Aunt June, you two should go take care of your business."

Now that she was awake, there was indeed no need for so many people to stay.

Yancy Shaw knew the old woman doted on Sophia the most. He nodded. "Alright. I’ll head to the company first."

June Evans stood up as well. "I’ll go home to check on Chloe and make some nourishing soup for Mom."

Not long after they left, her grandmother also fell asleep.

Only then did Sophia step out of the room.

She stood alone in the hallway for a moment, thinking. Then, she took a deep breath and dialed Vincent Grant’s number.

’Vincent Grant caused this mess, so only he can fix it.’

The phone rang several times.

Just as Sophia was thinking he wouldn’t pick up, the call connected. "Are you looking for Vincent Grant?"

The voice was clear and cold. It could be no one other than Joanna Sherman.
