Apocalypse - Infinite Resource System
Chapter 108: Self-Destruct
Puff! The front left tire of Waldo’s car was punctured by an iron spike. Unlike a nail slowly deflating the tire, the iron spike directly tore open a gash in the tire.
The sudden loss of control caused Waldo to slide sideways, catching him off guard. With no ABS in the old car, the steering wheel became unsteady. Despite Waldo’s efforts to maintain a straight line, it was futile.
He could only slam on the brakes, but the car ended up colliding with the roadside fence. Fortunately, the car lacked airbags, not due to the impact being weak, but because the old vehicle didn’t have them in the first place.
At this moment, the other members of the police station quickly closed in, firing at the car. As Waldo stepped out of the car, it suddenly exploded. Unfazed, Waldo promptly took out his AK47 and returned fire. The pursuing police members were mowed down.
Scorpion cursed aloud, frustrated by how many bullets 10086 seemed to have, as if they were endless. The thought crossed the minds of others too, but none dared utter it in front of Sheriff, fearing his wrath.
In the midst of the chaos, Black Bear joined the fray, disliking the way Waldo was rampaging like a god of war. Waldo saw Black Bear approaching and sprayed bullets his way. However, Black Bear activated his awakened ability, hardening his body as he charged forward.
"10086! Your opponent is me!" Black Bear shouted, using his shield to protect himself from the gunfire. While charging, he was grazed by a stray bullet but remained undeterred.
Waldo threw a few grenades at Black Bear, injuring him but not enough to stop his relentless advance. Waldo then abandoned his AK47 and unsheathed a long-unused Critical Strike Warrior’s blade. He and Black Bear engaged in close combat.
Black Bear’s awakened ability seemed to be another survivor with extraordinary combat skills. Waldo had learned from his previous battles with Crow and honed his fighting techniques accordingly. He now employed evasive maneuvers and combined them with the length of the Critical Strike Warrior’s blade.
As the battle raged on, Black Bear, a seasoned killer, grew increasingly agitated, revealing openings that Waldo took advantage of. Dodging a punch from Black Bear, Waldo swiftly countered by slashing from under Black Bear’s right armpit.
Despite the brutal combat, Waldo’s strategic moves and precision with the Critical Strike Warrior’s blade made him a formidable opponent. Black Bear’s frustration mounted, leading him to become more reckless and prone to making mistakes.
Waldo managed to avoid Black Bear’s right fist, deftly using the length of the blade to his advantage. As the battle intensified, Black Bear’s anger grew, making him more impulsive and vulnerable. Waldo seized the opportunity, sidestepping Black Bear’s punch and swiftly countering with an upward thrust of the Critical Strike Warrior’s blade.
Even though Black Bear activated his awakened ability, "Hardening," he couldn’t withstand Waldo’s attack. His severed arm flew through the air as he clutched his wound, grimacing in pain. His forehead veins bulged, and cold sweat streamed down his face.
The ground in front of him was instantly soaked with a mix of sweat and blood. The intense pain forced him to deactivate the "Hardening" ability.
Snap! Waldo fired a shot, aiming at the back of Black Bear’s head. Black Bear, fallen in battle!
Sheriff stood among the crowd of police officers, with a defense line made of wooden stakes and iron wire they had prepared from their backpacks separating him and Waldo. The tension between the two created sparks in the air. Then, Sheriff coldly spoke, "Open fire!"
Everyone pulled the triggers, not holding back on their last ammunition. In this battle, success meant gaining control of all of 10086’s resources. Every loss and sacrifice would be rewarded. Failure meant oblivion.
When they ran out of bullets, they resorted to throwing grenades. When grenades were gone, they used crossbow arrows. When arrows were exhausted, they resorted to hand-to-hand combat.
The police members charged at Waldo with large knives, but they couldn’t pierce his armor. Waldo could fend them off for quite some time unscathed. However, he couldn’t afford to be swarmed by multiple opponents, or he’d be easily overpowered and defenseless.
Waldo knew he couldn’t continue to hold his ground indefinitely. He took out his AK47 and continued firing. One by one, the police members fell until most of them were dead.
In the midst of the chaos, Scorpion managed to sneak up on Waldo. Waldo quickly turned his gun and shot Scorpion. But Scorpion successfully grabbed hold of Waldo, hugging him tightly. Then, a white light emanated from Scorpion’s body.
Something’s not right!
Waldo tried to break free but was held in a firm grip. Scorpion exerted all his strength, hysterically shouting, "Let’s die together, 10086! Long live the police station!"
Boom! Scorpion activated his one-time skill, "Self-Destruct."
Waldo never expected Scorpion’s skill to be this suicidal attack. What’s the difference between this and the kamikaze from Japan?!
Caught off guard by this unexpected turn of events, Waldo took the full impact of the explosion, sustaining serious injuries. The seemingly indestructible combat suit proved insufficient in fully resisting Scorpion’s self-destructive attack.
As the smoke cleared, Scorpion vanished, reduced to ashes. Waldo lay motionless on the ground, gravely wounded. The once vibrant colors of his combat suit were now completely darkened.
Quickly, Waldo applied a hemostatic agent to his wounds, and its effects were almost immediate. The flow of fresh blood from his injuries quickly ceased.
Sheriff strolled over, approaching Waldo with an indifferent expression. All of this was part of his plan. He was well aware of Scorpion’s skill and knew that Scorpion would willingly sacrifice himself for the sake of the police station. After all, Sheriff had saved Scorpion’s life before.
Looking at Sheriff, who seemed triumphant and sly, Waldo snorted dismissively.
Sheriff looked down on Waldo from a high vantage point, assuming the posture of a winner. He already regarded Waldo as a prisoner at his mercy. A severely injured survivor like Waldo couldn’t possibly stir up any waves, or so he thought.
However, at that moment, Waldo suddenly shot up from the ground with explosive force. His leg muscles swelled, releasing astonishing power. Ignoring the reopened wound that had just been treated, he gripped a military dagger and thrust it towards Sheriff, who was within arm’s reach.
Sheriff remained unfazed and skillfully caught the military dagger that was aimed at him. But instead of Waldo’s wrist, it was the blade of the dagger that he held. His palm showed no signs of bleeding but was instead covered in calluses and dark, black hair!
Seeing the shocked expression on Waldo’s face, Sheriff thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Despite his surprise, Waldo quickly reacted, immediately releasing the dagger and putting some distance between them.
The core members of the police station had all awakened their skills, including Sheriff as the leader. This transformation didn’t surprise Waldo at all. Just at that moment, Sheriff’s body was covered in dark gray hair, and even demonic-like horns protruded from his head. His eyes emitted a faint yellow light as the transformation completed.
Sheriff sneered and said, "You didn’t expect this, did you? Scorpion’s self-destruct was just a part of my plan. I am the key to the plan! I will tear your head apart with my own hands!"
Sheriff’s awakened skill was "Bestial Transformation." He continued to mock Waldo, feeling confident and powerful. However, Waldo, with AK47 in hand, fired towards Sheriff. Using a nearby railing as a makeshift cover, Sheriff charged at Waldo.
With a swing, the railing struck Waldo like a club, sending him flying. Waldo tumbled on the ground, leaving scratches before coming to a stop. Despite being heavily wounded, Waldo showed great resilience and managed to use a special ointment to stop the bleeding.
Waldo activated his "Stealth" skill, intending to get closer to Sheriff unnoticed. Sheriff saw Waldo disappear and finally realized how Waldo had managed to steal the platinum-level supply box right under everyone’s noses.
He mused, "So, you’ve awakened a skill too. Though, it seems quite useless, doesn’t it? Stealth suits you, like a little rat, haha!"
Sheriff laughed mockingly, but Waldo remained undeterred. A qualified infiltrator couldn’t let external factors affect their emotions.
Suddenly, Waldo made a move, but Sheriff smoothly dodged the attack with a quick turn. Waldo’s strike missed its target.
Sheriff teased, "Come out, it’s futile. I can smell your presence."
Unexpectedly, Sheriff’s sense of smell had also improved. His "Bestial Transformation" had enhanced his physical qualities to such an extent.
Waldo deactivated his skill, revealing his body, looking serious. He shifted the military dagger through different motions, his brain working rapidly to devise a plan.
Sheriff, observing Waldo’s behavior, felt even more confident of his victory.
Are you regretting opposing my police station now? Let me tell you, it’s too late! Since the moment you refused to join the police station, your fate was sealed! I am the sole ruler of this city, and anyone who obstructs my path will die! Those who follow me will prosper, while those who go against me will perish! Don’t you understand?
As Sheriff passionately delivered his monologue, Waldo couldn’t help but feel embarrassed for him. "After all that, are you trying to recruit me?" Waldo asked.
Sheriff misunderstood Waldo’s words and believed he was finally scared and begging for mercy. "Now you realize how powerful I am? Haha, too late," Sheriff sneered. "Do you want to join us? No, no, no, I want you dead! I once gave you a chance, but you didn’t take it seriously. Now, I’ll kill you, take your supplies, and claim your woman!"
Waldo’s expression turned cold. "Are you angry? Haha, what can you do about it?" Sheriff laughed arrogantly.
Waldo took out two military daggers and gripped them tightly. "What can I do? Try me and you’ll find out."
Sheriff wasn’t intimidated by Waldo’s words; in fact, he found them amusing. How could a pathetic loser who had been beaten down by him have the audacity to act tough in front of him?
"Try you?" Sheriff said mockingly, his attacks growing even more ferocious. He vowed to crush Waldo beneath his feet and avenge the humiliation he had endured at Waldo’s hands. He couldn’t bear the disgrace he had suffered before Saturn and Drug Lord’s teams.
Sheriff’s eyes, which had turned slightly yellow due to "Bestial Transformation," began to turn red as his anger took control.
Waldo tried his best to avoid the attacks. Sheriff’s strikes were too fierce, like that of a raging tiger coming down from the mountains, leaving him with no chance to retaliate.
But Waldo couldn’t afford to sit back and wait for death. Even without opportunities, he had to create them. Waldo intentionally took a punch to the head from Sheriff. The hardened S-alloy of his battle suit’s facial mask was slightly deformed from the impact, but luckily, his head remained unharmed.
During that instant, Waldo used the opportunity to slash Sheriff’s abdomen in exchange for his own injury. Although Sheriff’s "Bestial Transformation" provided some level of skin hardening, he was still flesh and blood, with some vulnerable and fatal spots.
Sheriff kicked Waldo away, touched the wound on his abdomen, and seemed unbothered. "Any other tricks? Show me what you’ve got! Where’s your gun? Come on, see if you can kill me!"
Sheriff treated Waldo like a little pet, planning to toy with him until he grew tired of the game, then kill him.
Sheriff didn’t consider himself cruel; instead, he believed that sparing Waldo’s life was a mercy. If it weren’t for his benevolence, Waldo would have already been waiting in line to drink Meng Po’s soup in the underworld.
Sheriff thought Waldo had been left speechless by his taunts. "What’s wrong with you? Weren’t you acting all high and mighty before? Why aren’t you saying anything now?" he continued to mock.
Waldo remained silent and slowly extended his fingers, one by one.
Three.
Two.
Waldo slowly retracted his fingers.
Sheriff frowned deeply. "Are you crazy? What are you doing with these antics?"
Waldo didn’t speak, looking at Sheriff as if he were already dead.
One!
