Apocalypse: Zombie King is the Female Lead's Younger Sister
Chapter 272: A Little Trouble
Serena knew that Zerra and Cassias shared a room. The fact displeased her, but she still knocked on their door.
"Cassias?" She said in a soft tone. Overnight, she had devised a plan on how to get close to the immortal-like man and get rid of his current partner.
Cassias’ appearance just hit right on her aesthetics! Such a man who was so ethereal even when he was fighting; she wanted him! Although he looked a bit thin and weak from the outside, she never made a wrong judgement about a man.
He was actually very powerful; she could feel it. Just the thought of his face alone already made her very excited.
Subconsciously, she knocked harder on the door. "Cassias?"
No one opened the door. She didn’t know if anyone was inside. She gritted her teeth and called out, "Zerra?"
Just as she thought that the girl despised her and afraid she would snatch her fiancee away, thus unwilling to open the door, she heard a click. The door was opened, revealing a slender and fair-skinned girl.
Even Serena was a bit jealous at Zerra’s looks. In the apocalypse where the weather was uncertain and declining air or water quality, most people’s skin became more rough and dry.
"What’s the matter, Miss Serena?" Zerra smiled softly at the girl in front of her.
Her smile provoked Serena further; she hated seeing this girl had such a happy face! Her fists clenched, wanting to tear her face apart. However, Serena still held herself back. Outwardly, she presented a similar soft smile.
"Is Cassias inside?" She peered into the room. A slender frame suddenly blocked her sight.
"What business do you have with us?" Zerra curled up her lips.
Serena was annoyed, but her roaming eyes caught something unusual. Zerra’s foot was bandaged. How did she get injured...?
"Oh, it’s nothing special." Serena’s mood improved a little. A gleam of calculation flashed in her eyes. "The number of crystal cores our team submitted yesterday was a little too many."
"Among the members of our team, you and Cassias contribute the most. So, I come here to give you the excess crystal cores." She handed a bag to Zerra.
Zerra inwardly raised her eyebrows. She couldn’t have counted wrongly since Cassias also checked the number. The one in charge of the missions stated they had fulfilled the mission too.
She would be a fool if she didn’t notice it was merely an excuse to meet Cassias. He rarely came out of the room, pretending not to hear when she mentioned about getting a new room. He was so cunning; changing into his cute dragon form just to divert the topic.
"Thanks." She took the crystal cores from Serena’ hands. "Sorry, Miss Serena, I am a bit busy today so I can’t entertain you."
Serena’s expression became a little stiff at Zerra’s words. Seeing her standing like a statue without responding, Zerra also became a little impatient.
"See you later, Miss Serena." With that, she closed the door.
Zerra threw the small bag to Cassias, who was teasing the baby tiger.
She was also sure this guy was avoiding her parents now; she didn’t understand the reason. Every time her parents were awake, he acted like a silly little dragon again.
For now, she would just let it be. Her parents’ recovery was her utmost focus. They still had difficulty changing into their human forms. Each transformation only lasted for a few minutes.
Zerra sat on the bed, recalling what had happened last night. They finally captured and killed the special zombie, but she was also bleeding.
However, it also didn’t matter much. The crystal core in the zombie’s brain was as big as a pigeon egg! As soon as Cassias cleaned that thing, even she couldn’t resist shifting to her fox form and began to munch on it.
Now, she has six tails.
Besides that, they also found out about a zombie gathering a bit far from the base. There were more than one intelligent zombie!
These intelligent zombies were a little more cunning and ruthless. They deliberately hid their presence and didn’t hesitate to sacrifice their own just to deceive the base’s people, sending a few zombies to give the impression that their numbers were declining.
The ability users would never have imagined that these zombies were pretending to be pigs to eat the tiger! There might be a zombie siege soon!
Cassias stared at the back of Zerra’s head, his eyes twinkling. Her mood seemed to be a little bad. Was it because Serena was looking for him...?
"Why are you looking at me like that?" The moment Zerra turned around, she saw Cassias’ weird gaze.
His eyes deepened. He smiled and asked, "Are you going to tell them?"
Zerra’s little face scrunched up a little bit. "I think I should."
However, they might not believe her.
"At least you would have told them. It didn’t matter even though the decision is still theirs to make." Cassias shook his head. He understood why Zerra wanted to inform the base.
She considered them taking her in as an act of kindness, so she was just trying to repay it back.
When Cassias waved the remaining intelligent zombie’s crystal core in front of her, she instantly turned to her fox form and started munching on it.
She even allowed Cassias to stroke her fur as she ate. The more her tails increase, the better her control over her transformation. Even if she accidentally turned into a fox, the frequency had decreased a lot.
For the whole morning, she spent her time munching over the delicious crystal core while having the baby tiger licking her. The intelligent zombie they killed seemed to be the strongest around this place.
The rest of the intelligent zombies weren’t as strong, but the numbers were a lot. It might take a while to kill them all even if she and Cassias joined forces. But, they also didn’t have the time to do that.
Her parents would recover soon, and at that time, they would leave.
***
"Miss Zerra, Mr. Cassias. What brings the two of you here?" Mr. Davis, the base leader, was a middle-aged man with a beer belly and a shrewd appearance.
Despite his looks, he must have been a capable one to be able to lead a human base. There should be many people eyeing his position. He could still stand firm even with his spoiled daughter occasionally causing trouble too.
Zerra didn’t beat around the bush. "During a mission my fiance and I participated in last time, we discovered an anomaly. There seemed to be a few intelligent zombies." She paused. "They might pose a significant threat to the base."
Besides Cassias and Mr. Davis, there were also a few high-ranking members of the base. When she said she wanted to talk to Mr. Davis, they somehow followed and stuck around, wanting to hear what it was.
A disdainful look crossed their faces. Serena was right; this woman was so pretentious.
"Miss Zerra, do you have proof of your claim?" a high-ranking member snorted.
Zerra calmly admitted. "I don’t."
"If that’s the case, then Miss Zerra shouldn’t speak carelessly! If you found several intelligent zombies at once, it was impossible for your small team to have anyone making it out alive!" An agitated high-ranking member jumped and slammed the table in anger.
"Miss Zerra, we hope that you won’t spread news carelessly to others and create panic among our base members."
"Miss Serena came with you yesterday and she didn’t spot any intelligent zombies you mentioned. Even if there were more zombies than usual, it didn’t mean the horde had birthed an intelligent zombie."
They all kept voicing out her discontent about her previous words.
Zerra glanced at Mr. Davis, who was merely watching from the side and didn’t interfere even if his people were throwing accusations on her.
"Miss Zerra, you have only come to our base around a week ago." Mr. Davis shook his head. "Their opinions are correct. We hope that you won’t spread what you have said to us outside, lest it cause panic among people."
"Our teams have done regular checks on the area around our base to make sure that zombies weren’t plotting against us. We always took care of the zombies which had formed a small gathering." Mr. Davis shook his head. "We still have confidence in our people."
Zerra nodded and didn’t argue further. "Alright, I won’t spread it outside."
The people were a little astonished at Zerra who was quick to give up. She didn’t even argue back to defend her claim.
"You are really making fun of us, are you, Miss Zerra?"
She shrugged. "Then, what do you want? Even if I argue with you again, you still won’t believe me, do you?"
They were a little speechless, but her words did make some sense.
"We are leaving." She stood up, taking Cassias’ hand.
However, before she could leave the room, she met with Serena at the door, who was wearing a smug smile.
"Miss Zerra, where are you going? Are you feeling guilty and want to escape after a zombie bitten you?"
