Chapter 29: Chapter 29: A Laughable Outcome

Kaden Xavier stood by the bed. In the faint morning light filtering through the window, he saw Wren Wynter’s pale face and the dark circles under her eyes. His heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand.

The cold look she’d given him at the airport today... it had filled him with a strange sense of panic and fear.

Even now, Kaden Xavier still didn’t understand.

’How had the two of them... ended up like this?’

But he would absolutely not...

Suddenly, his phone vibrated. He quickly pulled it out, switched it to silent, and glanced at the screen. It was his assistant.

’It must be about the compensation negotiations and the PR crisis following the plane crash.’

Kaden Xavier took one last, deep look at Wren Wynter, then turned, quietly closed the door, and walked to the study.

There was a whole mess waiting for him to clean up, including... how to deal with Seraphina Sutton.

The next day, Wren Wynter was woken by her alarm clock.

She reached out to turn off the alarm, wearily opened her eyes, and rolled over in bed. Her body ached as if it had been pulled apart.

She forced herself up. After washing up, she went to the dining room to make breakfast and prepared food and water for Lucky.

Wren Wynter changed into her uniform, left home, and got ready to formally submit her resignation at the company. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Just as she entered the flight surgeon’s office, Joy Lynch leaned in conspiratorially and whispered, "Wren, Seraphina Sutton was disciplined!"

Wren froze. "What was the result?"

’I am a little curious, but...’

Wren lowered her gaze, unable to stop the thought from surfacing: ’Would Kaden Xavier really have the heart to punish her?’

The moment the thought appeared, she herself was taken aback.

’So... without even realizing it, I’ve already lost most of my trust in Kaden Xavier.’

"Apparently, the higher-ups held an emergency meeting last night and decided it." Joy pursed her lips and snorted. "They said it was for ’grossly inappropriate conduct at the scene of a major accident rescue, causing a severely negative impact,’ so she got a one-week suspension and a major demerit."

Joy couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "And that was them going easy on her for Kaden Xavier’s sake. Otherwise, she might have been fired on the spot."

’A one-week suspension.’

Wren’s lips twitched into a sneer as a cold, mocking feeling rose within her.

’A human life, in Kaden Xavier’s eyes, is probably only worth a one-week suspension for Seraphina Sutton...’

’How utterly ridiculous.’

"By the way," Joy said, her eyes sparkling, "Wren, you were so cool yesterday! Pushing that manipulative bitch aside! It was so satisfying to watch! If she weren’t pregnant, she deserved a couple of hard slaps. She’s so disgusting..."

Joy’s disgust for Seraphina Sutton was practically impossible to hide.

Wren lowered her eyes and began tidying up her desk, a self-deprecating smile on her face. "So what? That person... still lost their life..."

’If only I had been a little earlier...’

’But in this world, there are no ’what ifs’.’

"But... what happened with you and Captain Xavier later..." Joy carefully watched Wren’s expression, her eyes filled with worry.

"There’s nothing to say between him and me," Wren said flatly. She took the already-prepared resignation letter from her drawer and turned to look at her friend. "Joy, I’m planning to resign."

"What?!" Joy exclaimed, utterly shocked. "You’re leaving? Where are you going?"

She had never imagined that Wren would actually want to quit.

But resigning...

’Seems like it could be a good thing, too?’

’She won’t have to see that vile, manipulative bitch every day.’

"I haven’t decided yet. Maybe a hospital," Wren said, placing the resignation letter into a folder. "I’m going to find the director first to hand this in."

"Okay, go ahead." Joy nodded. She didn’t really have any objections to Wren resigning.

After all, Wren had been through so much unfairness recently. If it had been her, she would have exploded long ago.

Wren had only endured for so long because she was good-tempered, gentle, and kind...

Just as Wren reached the door and was about to open it, the door to the flight surgeon’s office was violently shoved open from the outside.

Seraphina Sutton’s eyes were red-rimmed, tears still streaking her face. The moment she saw Wren, she demanded furiously, her voice thick with sobs and hatred, "Wren Wynter! Are you satisfied now? I’ve been suspended! I got a major demerit! Are you happy?!"

The entire office fell silent in an instant. Everyone turned to look.

Joy was the first to explode, stepping in front of Wren and cursing angrily, "Seraphina Sutton, what the hell is wrong with you?"

"You were disciplined for your own screw-up, what does that have to do with Wren? If you hadn’t stopped the doctor yesterday, insisting on saving a dog, would that person have died? And now you have the nerve to blame someone else?"

"I didn’t! It’s not like I did it on purpose! How was I supposed to know that person would die?" Seraphina shrieked in rebuttal, tears falling even faster as she gritted her teeth and defended herself. "I was just too anxious... It was Wren Wynter!"

"She deliberately blew the situation out of proportion and made sure everyone saw! She just can’t stand me and wants to ruin me!"

Wren looked at Seraphina’s tear-streaked face as she played the victim and twisted the facts, and suddenly felt an immense sense of weariness.

She stepped around Joy and walked up to Seraphina, her calm eyes filled with scorn. "Seraphina Sutton, the person who died because you wasted time will never come back."

"His family might not even have the chance to mourn until the accident investigation is over and they can finally see his cold body. You’re here crying about your one-week suspension. Don’t you think that’s laughable? Don’t you find yourself disgusting?"

Seraphina was choked speechless by the coldness in Wren’s eyes and the truth in her words, her face flushing red and then turning pale.

"Get out," Wren said coldly. "I’m busy. No one has time to watch your performance."

Seraphina shot her a vicious glare, then glanced at the scornful or indifferent looks from their colleagues. Unable to stay any longer, she covered her face, cried, and ran out.

Joy spat in the direction of her retreating back. "Serves her right!"

She thought Seraphina was completely out of line. Where did she get the thick skin to come here and scream at Wren?

’Did she really think that would cover up everything she did?’

’And did she think she could just pin the blame on Wren for no reason?’

After the little incident, Wren picked up the folder, left the flight surgeon’s office, and headed for the director’s office.

The director was nursing a headache over a pile of accident reports on his computer. When he saw her enter, his gaze shifted downward to the folder in her hand, and his expression grew even more distressed.

He didn’t even have to guess; he knew what Wren was holding.

The director tried to persuade her, his voice full of resignation, "Dr. Wynter, you’re here again... Didn’t I tell you? Now is really not a good time! Look at this mess. The flight surgeon’s office is already short-staffed, and if you leave..."

"Director, my mind is made up." Wren placed the resignation letter on his desk, her calm eyes filled with resolve. "As per regulations, I will ensure a proper handover of my duties."

She could no longer continue working here.

Leaving was the best choice.

’Why should I wear myself out and make myself so unhappy for the sake of others?’

"Oh, come on, just reconsider!" The director stood up, pleading earnestly. "I know about yesterday... there might have been some misunderstanding with Mr. Xavier, but you can’t just up and leave like this!"

"This is a difficult time for us. As employees..."
