Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Going to Marinus

"Director," Wren Wynter said with a slight frown, her expression serious. "My resignation has nothing to do with anyone. I just want a change of scenery and a job that’s more suitable for me."

"You know what I did before."

She knew just how outstanding Wren Wynter was, which was why she didn’t want to lose such a talented person.

The director pursed her lips and pushed Wren Wynter’s resignation letter back. "Dr. Wynter, please reconsider. You’ve been here for quite some time, and you’re about to be promoted. It would be a terrible shame to miss that opportunity by resigning so suddenly."

Wren Wynter looked up and sneered inwardly.

’If there really was a promotion, there’s no way it would go to a junior flight doctor like me.’

"That won’t be necessary, Director. I’ve already made my decision."

The director looked conflicted.

She had a high opinion of Wren Wynter. She was competent, even-tempered, and always efficient and decisive in her work.

She really couldn’t bear to let her go!

"Sigh... It’s such a shame."

The director picked up her pen, hesitating as she looked again at the resignation letter on the desk.

Just as she was about to put pen to paper, there was a knock on the office door. A man in a suit stood at the entrance, his expression stern.

"Director Lynch, the senior management meeting is about to start. Don’t be late."

"Okay."

The director seemed to let out a sigh of relief, putting down her pen and looking at Wren Wynter with an apologetic expression.

"Dr. Wynter, I’m terribly sorry, but I have to go to a meeting now. I’ll handle your resignation when I get back. You should take some more time to think it over, too."

With that, she got up and hurried out of the office as if making an escape.

Wren Wynter, unable to get a word in, watched the director’s retreating figure, her gaze heavy with unspoken words.

’Fine. I’ll just come back tomorrow.’

Wren Wynter left the office.

After work, just as Wren Wynter finished feeding her puppy, her phone rang.

Seeing the name on the caller ID, she paused in surprise.

Then her expression softened, and the first genuine smile in days appeared on her face.

She answered the phone, a smile on her lips. "Third Senior Brother."

A cheerful, laughing voice came from the other end of the line. "Wren! Have you missed your senior brother?"

Her Third Senior Brother’s name was Leo Crowe.

Among all their peers from medical school, he was the most vivacious and the least like a typical, straight-laced student.

Instead of working in a hospital after graduation, he started his own medical device company and was doing exceptionally well.

"Third Senior Brother, why the sudden call?" Wren Wynter asked as she walked to the window, her expression relaxing considerably.

"Hehe, it’s good news!" Leo Crowe’s voice was filled with a smugness he couldn’t hide. "Your senior brother is getting married! Next weekend, in Marinus. We’re having a small ceremony, inviting only our closest family and friends. Wren, you have to be there! You’ve got to come and show some support for your new sister-in-law!"

Wren Wynter was utterly surprised. She never expected her Third Senior Brother to settle down so soon.

She was genuinely happy for him and said in pleasant surprise, "Really? Congratulations, Senior Brother! I’ll definitely be there!"

"Then it’s a deal! I’ll message you the address. By the way..." Leo Crowe paused, his tone becoming a bit more serious. He hesitated for a moment before saying, "Our teacher will be there too. He doesn’t say it, but he really misses you."

"When you come over, you’d better apologize to him properly, you hear?"

Warmth flooded Wren Wynter’s heart, followed by a pang of sorrow. "Mm, I know. Thank you, Senior Brother."

’She had been so foolish back then.’

’All for a so-called love...’

’How ridiculous it all seemed now.’

After hanging up, Wren Wynter started planning her trip.

Marinus wasn’t far from the Capital; it was only a little over two hours by high-speed rail.

She opened her closet, started picking out suitable clothes, and pulled a small suitcase out from under her bed.

A hint of anticipation colored Wren Wynter’s eyes. She wondered what kind of person her new sister-in-law was, to be able to snag her Third Senior Brother.

’And Teacher...’

’She missed him dearly. She wondered if he would ever forgive her... if he would let her come back to him.’

But these thoughts couldn’t spoil the slight improvement in Wren Wynter’s mood.

She was only halfway through packing when the bedroom door was suddenly pushed open.

Kaden Xavier didn’t even knock; he just walked straight in.

Wren Wynter’s brow furrowed slightly. The gentle expression on her face vanished in an instant. Without giving him so much as a glance, she continued packing her things.

Kaden Xavier saw the open suitcase and the clothes scattered on the bed. He stopped in his tracks, his brows knitting instinctively as he demanded, "Where are you going?"

Without looking up, Wren Wynter continued placing items in her suitcase. "To Marinus, for a senior brother’s wedding."

"Senior brother?" Kaden Xavier took two steps closer, his gaze scrutinizing her as he pressed, "What senior brother? When are you coming back?"

"A senior from medical school." Wren Wynter closed the suitcase and zipped it up, her cold eyes sweeping over him. "I’ll be gone for a few days, depending on the situation. But this is my business. It has nothing to do with you."

If not for his incessant, annoying questions, Wren Wynter wouldn’t have even bothered to explain.

Her calm and detached attitude made Kaden Xavier feel an inexplicable tightness in his chest, along with a flicker of tension he could barely perceive.

He had a feeling that this trip was different from any of her previous business trips or short getaways.

"I’ll have the driver take you," he said, softening his tone in an attempt to negotiate with her.

"That’s not necessary. I’m taking the high-speed rail." Wren Wynter’s refusal was curt. She wanted nothing to do with him.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Wren Wynter ignored Kaden Xavier and walked around him to open the door.

Joy Lynch was outside. She had changed into casual clothes and was carrying a small bag.

"Wren, are you packed? We’ll miss the train if we don’t leave now!" Joy Lynch said with a grin, but her smile faltered slightly when her gaze went past Wren and landed on Kaden Xavier inside the room.

Kaden Xavier looked at Joy Lynch outside the door, then at Wren Wynter, who had returned to grab her suitcase. His expression darkened.

’So even Joy Lynch knew where she was going. Only he, her husband, was being kept in the dark.’

"Wren, be safe," he finally managed to say, the words sounding hollow.

Wren Wynter hummed in acknowledgment and left with Joy Lynch, pulling her suitcase behind her.

The door closed, and the vast villa fell into an unsettling silence.

Kaden Xavier walked to the window and watched as Wren Wynter and Joy Lynch got into a taxi and sped away.

The unease in his heart grew stronger and stronger.

Suddenly, his assistant called.

Kaden Xavier answered with a frown, only to hear his assistant’s anxious voice. "Mr. Xavier! There’s a problem over in Marinus."

"The family of the passenger who died in yesterday’s incident due to delayed medical treatment... they’ve rejected our compensation offer. They’re extremely agitated."

"They... they’re threatening to go to the media, saying our airline has a reckless disregard for human life and is covering for the culprit..."

Kaden Xavier rubbed his aching brow and said wearily, "The compensation amount can be renegotiated. Pacify the family and make sure to minimize the impact."

’He knew Seraphina Sutton had gone too far this time!’

’But there was nothing to be done. She was carrying Asher Lynch’s only child.’

And he had promised Asher Lynch that he would take good care of Seraphina Sutton.

"Mr. Xavier, the family is taking a very hard line. They’re demanding to see the company’s highest-ranking executive and want an explanation."

"Specifically... they’re extremely dissatisfied with the outcome of Miss Sutton’s case, believing the punishment was too lenient," the assistant explained cautiously. "The Marinus branch can no longer handle the situation."
