Days as a Spiritual Mentor in American Comics
Chapter 5787 - 4810: Royal Casino (5)
Greed thought for a moment and first placed 20 chips on Superman. Although he couldn’t catch Batman and might lose money, if he did encounter him, Superman would almost certainly take the hit. Even with Superman’s superpower, it’s hard to outsmart Arkham Batman; this game relies more on wits than brawn.
Arkham Batman reached the fifth floor. This area wasn’t a part of the casino, but rather the employee offices. Superman should have found the safe here, but he probably didn’t head downstairs. Arkham Batman knew Clark and figured he would want to search for more here.
Walking along the reddish-brown carpet, Arkham Batman heard noises in the room at the far end, sounding like someone rummaging through drawers. He stopped in his tracks but didn’t rush to open the door. Last time, a heat beam nearly knocked him against the wall and he couldn’t get unstuck; if it were to hit him with a Frozen Breath this time, he’d truly experience the feeling of being a Metropolis villain.
Arkham Batman turned his head to take a quick look inside. Superman was rummaging through a filing cabinet with his back to the door. Arkham Batman waited briefly, and when Superman found something and was assessing it, he quickly stepped in, punching Superman on the side of the neck.
Superman staggered and almost fell to the ground, retaliating with a heat beam. But this time, Arkham Batman was prepared; he dodged to the side and was ready to throw another punch. Only then did Superman get up and run out.
Arkham Batman had to admit, he did feel a bit of dark pleasure. No Batman would be stupid enough to go head-to-head with Superman, and even if a fight were necessary, it would primarily be through brains rather than brawn. Who would trade blows with Superman?
But in this virtual game, you could indeed go toe-to-toe with Superman and even chase him down. Anyone would get a bit of that dark pleasure from it.
Arkham Batman chased Superman down the hallway. Superman looked left and right, seemingly hesitating over where to go. In that split second, he took another punch from Batman. It was predictable, the vision should already be flashing red.
Arkham Batman’s basic punching stats weren’t higher than Hunting’s, but his cooldown time was very short, allowing him to punch continuously, and there was even a chance to stun the opponent, sticking close to keep fighting.
Superman ran toward the other end of the hallway, and Arkham Batman wasn’t in a hurry, following behind at a steady pace until they reached the atrium. Superman jumped over the railing and jumped down.
Arkham Batman naturally jumped over the railing, prepared to go down. However, he started falling, and watched as Superman suddenly stopped mid-air and slowly flew back up.
After landing, Arkham Batman let out a long sigh. He turned his head and saw Superman, who had flown back to the fifth floor, leaning over the railing and smiling at him, his white teeth making the smile even brighter.
This casino had an atrium spanning the fifth floor, and a normal person could only make a leap to the bottom. But Superman could fly; he could jump down and then fly back up when others jumped after him. Just this atrium alone put him in an unbeatable position.
Arkham Batman really wanted to ask Doctor Manhattan what he was thinking. In a game of catch like this, allowing people to fly freely? Isn’t that basically cheating?
Looking at it now, he realized he couldn’t catch any of them: Superman could fly, Matt had X-ray vision of the whole map, the agent could launch in an instant, Lucifer had magical control, and the seemingly skill-less Greed was being tightly protected by them.
As Arkham Batman climbed back up the stairs, he started to think. He felt the main reason he bit the dust this round was actually because the gamblers were too united.
Conversely, the reason for his defeat in the previous round, besides Hunting being very strong, was because they were utterly fragmented. There was no plan, everyone did their own thing—they didn’t protect key targets and instead preemptively sabotaged allies. In contrast, in this round, although there was no communication, both Matt and the agent steadfastly protected Greed, and though Lucifer contributed nothing, he didn’t drag them down, and Superman also took action. While not perfectly coordinated, they were quite united.
This was similar to a competitive game between a random lineup and a preset five-person team. Random teams couldn’t have better cooperation than a five-person team, especially when this five-person team consisted of above-average players. If they weren’t winning, who would be?
As he headed upstairs, another safe was opened. Arkham Batman halted; now that two safes had been opened, it meant his other suit had been unlocked.
When Arkham Batman switched over to check, he didn’t even have time to look at the main skills before seeing in the suit description section: "The suit defaults to removing all movement and action restrictions—become the true Batman!"
Arkham Batman slowly raised his hand, then stretched his leg, and jumped in place, immediately following with a wall kick flip. Alright, alright, who can stop me now?!
Previously, he had already noticed that the ghost’s side couldn’t move freely. For instance, if he wanted to move forward, he could only walk slowly. Wanting to run while leaping big or making a cool superhero landing? Impossible.
He couldn’t even crouch, kick, dodge, or punch without following a set action module; switching moves midway was unlikely, let alone doing something like lying down.
But once equipped with the Bat Suit, all these limitations were lifted, and there was absolutely no stamina limit. He could even advance with a backflip now.
And the suit had more than one surprise for him. The first skill was the full set of Bat Equipment. Don’t be fooled by Arkham Batman’s appearance, it’s just his skin; these equipments had no real effects. For example, the belt couldn’t be opened, the Batman dart couldn’t be taken out, let alone the marking and night vision functions.
But now he regained his full set of Bat Equipment. Once the mask night vision goggles were turned on, the dark and empty hall was laid bare before his eyes. The Batman dart could be used now, and more importantly, the grappling hook in his arm armor returned, meaning he no longer had to take the stairs and could go up and down through the atrium directly.
The second skill, which he thought would be the Batmobile. Driving in the casino might be ridiculous, but the casino was huge, so it wasn’t impossible. But unexpectedly, the second skill was a mini-map.
Yes, it’s the map feature from the Arkham Batman game, not only featuring a semi-realistic 3D map but also marking key points with green icons. For instance, the locations of all the gambling facilities, safes, and exits were crystal clear.
However, on the map, Arkham Batman discovered that apart from these known key points, there were a few lightning-shaped markers. Arkham Batman guessed they might be power devices. Could the power be restored?
But in fact, other than the first floor, there was light in other places, especially the fourth and fifth floors, which never lost power. Arkham Batman quickly realized that these power devices were not for repairs but for disruption. He could cut off all the power, plunging the entire casino into darkness, whereas he had night vision goggles.
Arkham Batman immediately headed upstairs. But at this moment, he encountered the hurriedly emerging Superman. Having just been played by Superman, he was fuming, so without hesitation, he pulled out two Batman darts.
The Batman darts didn’t cause much damage; otherwise, they would work like a sniper, but they could provide a marker. The marker allowed him to see through walls, marking the position of this person, keeping them within Arkham Batman’s sight, convenient for hunting down.
Superman appeared a bit confused, as if he didn’t know what had hit him. Yet he attempted his previous trick, trying to fly to higher floors to escape Batman’s pursuit.
He used his flying skill again, reaching the fifth floor. Little did he know that a dark grappling hook latched onto the fifth-floor railing, and with a whoosh, Arkham Batman was up there, leaping into the air and delivering a downward whip kick. With a bang, Superman was sent flying and landed heavily on the ground.
Another heat beam shot over, Arkham Batman rolled, then kicked off the wall and landed a heavy punch. Before Superman could react, he took another hit.
However, seizing the gap as Batman punched, Superman scrambled up from the ground and ran quickly ahead while Arkham Batman followed him closely, his pace steady, yet his actions far from slow.
The terrain on the fifth floor was too narrow. Superman circled around and came back to the atrium edge, jumping down. This time he did land, but Arkham Batman also followed. Superman stumbled around a table.
This tactic might have worked on the previous Batman, but not now. As Superman circled a gambling table, Arkham Batman performed a blast along with a slide on the platform, then swished his cape and unleashed a spinning kick. Superman fell with a cry, and the two big words "Near Death" appeared in his field of vision.
Greed was stunned by the sound of coins dropping into the bag. Superman was taken down?! How could it be so fast???
He immediately realized that Arkham Batman might have unlocked some new skill or found a killing move. Otherwise, how could Superman, with heat beams and flying ability, be taken down so quickly?
Greed felt a bit anxious because the money earned so far was still insufficient. He wanted to stay and earn more, but the problem was, if Batman came now and took him down, he would have to use a Resurrection Coin to revive, which would cost him a considerable sum of money. Besides those for restoring blood volume, he would waste at least a few hundred chips.
Greed sighed and finally decided to call it quits. He needed to take this money to the store, spend it all first. The current burden was still a bit too heavy.
All gamblers could see the store locations, which were basically evenly distributed. It wasn’t so much a shop as it was a slot machine-like thing. Greed found the nearest one and started inserting coins to select items.
The items here were a motley mix, anything from accelerating reading speed, helping solve puzzles, controlling ghosts, setting traps...
Greed quickly selected the items he wanted - basically all life-saving items, spending until he had just enough left to revive himself to half blood volume, then headed upstairs. This time he chose to invest in Matt because he knew Matt would surely choose to save Superman, and Arkham Batman wouldn’t let him. The two would surely be entangled. Although he didn’t wish for Matt to fall, he considered it a kind of insurance.
