Days as a Spiritual Mentor in American Comics
Chapter 5788 - 4811: Royal Casino (6)
However, events unfolded in a way that caught Greed off guard. Matt was cut down in a single encounter, and since there was no maneuvering involved, not many chips were gained. But this wasn’t the worst news. From the speed of Matt’s dying collapse, Greed could tell that Arkham Batman must have received a substantial upgrade.
Greed silently cursed Doctor Manhattan: Isn’t enhancing Batman’s appearance and physique enough? Do you need to give him even stronger skills too?
As for Arkham Batman, his secret to quickly taking down Matt was actually just two words—sneak attack.
To be precise, it was lying in wait for the prey. Arkham Batman knew Matt could use X-ray vision on him and would definitely come to rescue Superman, so he set a trap.
He took Superman to a chair marked in green—a chair wired with electricity, seemingly capable of electrocuting someone. After tying Superman up, he waited there for a while, pretending to have other tasks to do, and then planned to leave through the front door.
Sure enough, Matt stealthily slipped in through the back door. And just as he went to operate that chair to rescue Superman, Arkham Batman returned, knocking Matt down with a punch.
His punching wind-up was very short. After knocking Matt to the ground, he threw a Batman dart for some extra damage, followed closely by another punch. Strangely, those two punches alone brought Matt to the brink of death. It seems that Superman’s base stats had been strengthened, enabling him to withstand three punches without dying.
With Matt down, Arkham Batman finally eliminated a major threat. Now Greed lacked attack skills, Lucifer was still inexperienced, the agent had turned traitor, and peace was not far off.
"Matt is down," Greed sighed, speaking to the agent.
"Someone must have completed the seal," the agent said. "Completing two seals would unlock new skills, and continuing would enhance them further. Matt might have been caught off guard and attacked by surprise."
"What should we do now?" Greed said, feeling a bit troubled. The situation had rapidly deteriorated, and they really didn’t have enough time left to develop any plans; Batman would soon come knocking.
The agent sighed softly and said, "I could go alone, since my victory conditions have been changed."
Greed raised an eyebrow as the agent briefly described what had happened with his skill. Greed thought for a moment and said, "If you leave, does that count as a win for him?"
"I guess it does, just not as a perfect victory."
"That works too," Greed didn’t hesitate at all, "if we can’t escape, then you can leave alone. Or you could tell him our location; if he takes us all out, you can leave."
"Stop joking," the agent said worriedly, "if it’s just the two of us, that might work. After all, we’re just one. But have you thought about Lucifer and Matt? Not even Superman would spare me, they’d kill me for being a traitor."
"The reason I told you this is that I don’t intend to side with Batman. I don’t want to be hunted down by Superman, Lucifer, and Night Devil together. That’s not part of my job; Mr. President didn’t pay for this."
Greed laughed and said, "Then you surely will be hunted down. Especially by Matt, we’re close, and he is known for hating evil. If you offend him, don’t ever think about going to the Central Universe."
"So we need to think about what to do now," the agent said, "I’m just one person, and can’t stay here to protect you while also rescuing Matt. But we can’t count on Lucifer."
"No," Greed said, "let Lucifer do the rescue."
The agent looked at him somewhat puzzled, and Greed continued, "Lucifer’s not inept, he’s just uninvolved. But that might just be because there isn’t any pressure. You saw how involved he was during escape room games?"
"That’s because Anatoli was there, right?"
"We were there too," Greed said, "I’ll hide first, and you find a way to locate him."
"Where will you hide?"
"In the cabinet, of course."
Although it’s not very safe, there wasn’t a better solution. After the agent left, Greed found a cabinet in the corridor and hid inside, leaving everything to fate.
Arkham Batman indeed quickly came searching, unconstrained with a grappling hook, searching the five-story casino was incredibly easy. And with his night vision goggles, nothing could escape his sight.
Arkham Batman could still use the President Suit’s skills, highlighting the gambling facilities in use. Seeing that someone was using them on this floor, he suspected it was Greed. Now, just dealing with Greed would ensure the game was won.
After going upstairs, the first thing he did was check the rooms, especially the ones with the gambling facilities that had been used, but there was no one there. Then he went up another floor, only to come back down after a while. Afterwards, he came to this floor once more, unwilling to give up. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Greed, hiding inside the cabinet, could only curse in his heart, "There’s nothing on this floor, can’t you just go to the top floor and look? Who gave you the confidence that I’m definitely on this floor? Haven’t you heard the saying that a rabbit doesn’t eat the grass near its own burrow?"
In fact, he really underestimated Arkham Batman. It was because of that psychological tactic played during the hunt that led to Black Widow’s escape failure; now Arkham Batman was predicting Shiller’s predictions.
He thought that Shiller would definitely play hide-and-seek under the lamp. That means, knowing that he would be searched for, instead of running far away, Shiller would hide near the facilities he used before.
After searching once and finding nothing, he would think Shiller had already run away, and then go search farther. In this way, Shiller could take the opportunity to slip away, reveal his whereabouts in another place, continue using this trick to waste his opponent’s time.
Have to admit that he predicted it quite accurately; that’s exactly Greed’s plan. It’s not that he didn’t want to predict, predict the prediction, and so on, but he didn’t have the ability. It’s not about psychological prowess, but he didn’t have the escape skills. Even if he ran, he wouldn’t get far and might even run into him directly. Hiding under the light was out of helplessness.
Watching Arkham Batman stubbornly refuse to leave, Greed was actually hesitating whether to show himself, pretend to be cut down by Arkham Batman, and then escape halfway. But upon thinking that even if he escaped halfway, without acceleration skills, he wouldn’t get far; the old trick of maneuvering around corners wouldn’t work either.
Finally, Arkham Batman began checking the cabinets. It wasn’t that he hadn’t thought of this before, but he didn’t know people could hide in the cabinets. After all, nobody hid in the cabinets last round, so he didn’t know there was such a rule.
Watching Arkham Batman check one cabinet after another, Greed finally gave up on his fantasy. However, he realized there might be another way to survive, which was to rescue Matt.
Arkham Batman didn’t know that he could stand up on his own from a near-death state, so he’d be unprepared. With many control and life-saving items on hand, he could throw them on Arkham at the instant he stood up, then use a med kit to revive Matt; only by escaping together could they truly get away.
But how to get Arkham Batman to take him to where Matt was? He didn’t even know where he had been cut down, and Arkham Batman clearly wasn’t open to persuasion anymore.
Greed weighed his options, contemplating whether to use an item for a desperate gamble, but ultimately decided against it. He didn’t want to waste his items like that.
Greed held his breath inside the cabinet, listening to the approaching footsteps of Arkham Batman. The moment the cabinet door was opened, he darted out, dodging Arkham Batman’s first punch, and immediately ran towards the end of the corridor.
He couldn’t outrun Arkham Batman on a straight path, so he quickly left the straight path and jumped down an atrium. Once he landed on the first floor, he picked a direction at random and hid behind a gambling table, avoiding visibility.
He didn’t know if Batman had a tracking skill, but he could observe. Arkham Batman instinctively scanned the surrounding environment and carpet for footprints, but there were none, of course. This kind of game for fair competition wouldn’t allow for too many external factors; otherwise, Batman would be invincible, his detective skills and full map X-ray vision rendering everything else pointless.
Arkham Batman really hadn’t marked Shiller. His Batman dart needed to hit for it to work; Greed dodged quickly just now, and neither the punch nor the dart hit him. By blocking line of sight just right, it turned out Arkham Batman really didn’t know where he went.
However, Arkham Batman could search slowly because he had night vision goggles. And the hall was spacious; he only needed to stand at certain angles to see if someone was hiding behind obstacles. Greed couldn’t make a move under his nose, or he would surely be discovered anyway.
Greed was banking on changing angles to block the sight line. Seeing Batman walking forward, he quickly moved to the right, but didn’t expect Arkham Batman to charge straight towards his position.
Greed took a sharp breath and began to run, but it was too late. Arkham Batman did a blast blitz, and with one punch, took a large portion of his health. The next blow immediately followed, and Greed was knocked straight to the ground.
He sighed inwardly with resignation; once caught, there was nothing he could do. Batman probably had night vision ability and even his minor movements were spotted.
Arkham Batman picked up Greed and headed towards the basement. Greed, who had been counting on the agents to turn things around, saw Superman and Matt tied to chairs in the same room, and his eyes brightened instantly. This was truly a glimmer of hope!
Unexpectedly, the final execution site turned out to be a communal platform; everyone was tied in the same room.
This was something Arkham Batman was also helpless against. He originally thought it would be simpler if he didn’t have to execute them in order. Although there’s no order rule this round, another execution rule changed: this time, the electric chair’s power source could only start twice.
In other words, he had to execute them collectively. With a total of 5 players and only two executions possible, it had to be either 3+2 or 4+1, but not one by one. So he had to save them all up for one shock session, giving Greed a chance to exploit.
Arkham Batman carried Greed, intending to place him on a chair next to Superman. Just when lowering him down, Greed used a Resurrection Coin, instantly recovering from near-death, then drew out an item and sprayed Arkham Batman’s face with pepper spray. Seizing the moment when Arkham was stunned, he operated Superman’s chair to free him.
Superman, with tacit understanding, shot a heat beam, causing Batman to retreat a few steps. Greed again seized the opportunity to release Matt. With Matt’s X-ray vision already active, the three hurriedly ran towards the door.
By the time Arkham Batman caught up, Greed threw a slime item onto the ground. Arkham Batman felt a pang of nostalgia for his previous immunity to ground skills, but he didn’t step into the trap and instead kicked against the wall to leap over. However, this was a slight delay, and the three had already disappeared.
Arkham Batman punched the wall in frustration, "Don’t let me catch you, Greed!"
