Chapter 163: Chapter 163: What a Poor Zoo

The director of the zoo, Director Dong, was an old man with white hair who dressed very simply. Anyone who didn’t know him would never guess he was the zoo’s director; they’d most likely mistake him for the gatekeeper.

So, as soon as Shen Yibin got out of the car and glanced around, he walked straight to the assistant standing next to Director Dong. "Hello, I’m Shen Yibin. I’m the one who called earlier about making a donation. Are you the director?"

The director’s assistant was thrilled to hear someone was donating, but his excitement immediately cooled when he saw Shen Yibin’s car. ’How much could someone driving a car like that possibly donate to the zoo?’

’Oh well, something is better than nothing. Even a few thousand yuan would be enough to buy the animals a little more food.’ The director’s assistant quickly composed himself and guided Shen Yibin toward Director Dong. "Mr. Shen, this is Director Dong of our Yunzhong City Zoo."

"Oh, my apologies. Hello, Director Dong." Shen Yibin was a bit embarrassed. He quickly reached out and firmly shook Director Dong’s hand.

"Haha, it’s no problem at all. We welcome you, Mr. Shen, for showing our zoo your support." Director Dong was long used to this kind of treatment. Besides, this man was a potential God of Wealth; he couldn’t afford to be offended. So he laughed magnanimously and said, "You’ve had a long trip, Mr. Shen. Why don’t we go to my office for a cup of tea?"

"That would be great, thank you." After speaking, Shen Yibin called toward the car, "Hah’Er, come on out!"

’Mr. Shen brought a friend? But why a name like that?’ Everyone looked toward the passenger seat in confusion, then froze. A chubby, roly-poly, and utterly adorable panda emerged from the car and waddled over to Shen Yibin’s side.

"Oh, so it’s you! No wonder that name sounded so familiar!" the director’s assistant exclaimed, slapping his thigh. He quickly explained Shen Yibin and Hah’Er’s origins to Director Dong. He liked to watch variety shows in his free time and already knew about Shen Yibin and Hah’Er from the video of the Great Butterfly talent show.

This saved Shen Yibin the trouble of explaining. He smiled and said, "Well, since everyone already knows, that makes things easier. I’m here to make a donation, but to be honest, I have a personal motive. Due to a series of fortunate coincidences, Hah’Er ended up with me. Ever since Hah’Er came to live with me, I’ve been on pins and needles every day, terrified that something might happen to it."

"Even though I have a good relationship with the Sichuan Giant Panda Base and can ask them for help if a problem arises, Sichuan is a great distance from Yunzhong City. If there’s an emergency, I’m afraid they won’t make it in time," Shen Yibin said as he walked with them into the zoo. "That’s why I wanted to come and ask for your help. I figured your zoo must have highly skilled veterinarians. If Hah’Er has an emergency in the future, I was hoping I could turn to you for help."

"No problem. Our zoo may be small, but Director Dong is an expert in this field. Besides, pandas are nationally protected animals. Even if you weren’t donating, we would be duty-bound to help if a problem arose." The director’s assistant was quite articulate.

"I’ll be counting on you, then." As he spoke, Shen Yibin entered the zoo and... he immediately froze. ’This zoo is way too run-down, isn’t it?’ The office building had the old style of the eighties or nineties. The wire mesh of the animal enclosures was tattered, barely able to keep the animals from escaping. There were hardly any visitors, just a sparse few scattered about.

"Here we are. This is our office building. The conditions are a bit basic, so I hope you don’t mind, Mr. Shen," the director’s assistant said as they reached the entrance.

"This building looks pretty old, doesn’t it?" Shen Yibin was genuinely surprised. The building’s heavy Soviet-style architecture and the mottled stains on its walls spoke volumes about its age. Inside the office, Shen Yibin saw there wasn’t even a sofa. The small room was furnished with two old rattan chairs for receiving guests.

"There’s nothing we can do. For years, Yunzhong City has been focused on economic development, and our zoo’s funding has been cut again and again. Without funding, we can’t bring in new animals. Without new animals, we can’t attract visitors. It’s become a vicious cycle." The assistant shook his head repeatedly. He had worked here for many years and had grown attached to the zoo. It pained him to watch it fall into decline.

"I hope things get better in the future." Shen Yibin couldn’t do anything about the situation, so he could only offer empty words of comfort.

After some more pleasantries, the director’s assistant finally couldn’t help but get to the point. "I was wondering, Mr. Shen, how much are you planning to donate this time? We have a very standardized procedure for donations at our zoo. Every expenditure will be recorded and made available for you to review. We guarantee that every cent will be put to good use."

"Regarding the use of this fund, I have my own idea. I wonder if Director Dong would be open to it?" Shen Yibin didn’t answer directly, posing a question of his own instead.

"Please, go ahead, Mr. Shen. As long as it’s something we can do, we’ll definitely agree," Director Dong replied.

"I mentioned my reason for donating earlier. I hope this money can be used for medical purposes—to help treat the animals’ illnesses. At the same time, this would also allow the medical staff to accumulate sufficient experience, so that if anything happens to Hah’Er in the future, it can receive better treatment," Shen Yibin said.

"No problem, we can do that." Hearing such a simple request, Director Dong breathed a sigh of relief. "To be honest, that’s where our biggest shortfall is right now. You’ve really helped us out this time, Mr. Shen."

"I plan to donate three hundred and fifty thousand this time." Egg had earned 1,150,000 from stone gambling last time. According to the Future Pet Shop’s rules, 345,000 of it had to be donated, so Shen Yibin simply added another 5,000 to make it an even number.

Three hundred and fifty thousand was no small sum for the zoo. Director Dong and his assistant were overjoyed, thanking him profusely. They called in the finance department to help Shen Yibin complete the necessary paperwork. If Shen Yibin hadn’t refused, they would have even called in reporters for publicity.

After handling these matters, Director Dong offered to give Shen Yibin a tour of the zoo. Since he had made the trip, Shen Yibin was indeed curious to look around. He also thought Hah’Er might be able to make some new friends, so he agreed.

The zoo wasn’t very large, so the group proceeded on foot. It wasn’t a weekend, and there were very few visitors, so Hah’Er wasn’t mobbed by a crowd. The group leisurely made their way from one exhibit to the next.

"Director, this is bad! Something’s happened!" While they were in the middle of the tour, an employee suddenly came running toward them, shouting. Shen Yibin instinctively looked in the direction the man had come from. ’What on earth happened?’
