Chapter 164: Chapter 164: Hah’Er in Peril

"What’s going on?" Director Dong grew tense as well. The zoo was already in such a dilapidated state; it couldn’t afford another incident!

"Just now... A young visitor just accidentally fell into the Xiong Mountain enclosure!" a staff member said, gasping for breath.

"What? But there’s a family of black bears in there!" Director Dong broke out in a sweat. ’Black bears are ferocious beasts! What if the child gets hurt?’ He immediately started running toward Xiong Mountain, shouting orders as he went. "Have the keepers for Xiong Mountain arrived? Go to the security department and tell them to bring out the anesthetic gun!"

"They’ve all arrived, but... but... Ugh! You’d better go see for yourself!" The staff member was too anxious to speak clearly. Fortunately, Xiong Mountain wasn’t far, and the group quickly arrived at the scene.

A sparse crowd of a few dozen tourists had gathered around the Xiong Mountain enclosure. A young couple, the parents, were staring down into it, sobbing in panic. Inside the enclosure, a child of about four or five years old sat on the ground, his face pale. In front of him, a small bear cub was curiously circling and sniffing at him. Not far off, the cub’s parents warily watched a keeper who was trying to approach them.

"Director, the little boy was leaning on the railing to look inside. A section of the guardrail was rusted through, and when he put his weight on it, it snapped. The child fell into the Xiong Mountain enclosure. Luckily, the drop wasn’t too high, so he seems unhurt for now, but it’s hard to say what will happen next..." Someone finally managed to explain the situation clearly.

"Please, save my child! If anything happens to him, I’ll make this zoo pay!" As soon as she saw the director, the child’s mother rushed over, weeping. As for the father, if two staff members weren’t forcibly holding him back, he probably would have jumped down to save his son already.

"Calm down, please, calm down. From the looks of it, your child isn’t in immediate danger. We’re working on a solution, and the anesthetic gun is on its way. We will do everything in our power to ensure your child’s safety," Director Dong quickly tried to reassure them.

He was intimately familiar with the zoo’s routines. ’According to the schedule, the keepers should have just finished feeding them. Black bears with full stomachs usually don’t attack unless provoked. As long as no one startles them, the child should be safe for a little while.’

However, the child’s fall seemed to have startled the bear family. Now, even the keeper they knew so well couldn’t get near the child. The cub’s parents were staring him down; it looked as if they would attack at the slightest sudden move. A zoo-raised black bear was still a black bear. If it went on a rampage, a keeper wouldn’t stand a chance.

"Director, we only have one anesthetic gun in the entire zoo, but there are three black bears down there. This is going to be tricky," the head of security said, troubled. He wasn’t some legendary Soldier King; there was no way he could tranquilize all three bears in an instant. ’If one bear goes down, the other two will probably attack the keeper and the child, right?’ That was a responsibility he couldn’t possibly bear.

"Call the police. Tell them to send someone with an anesthetic gun over here, ASAP," Director Dong said with a frown.

"The police department doesn’t have anesthetic guns. I already called. They’re on their way with sniper rifles, but if it comes to that, the three black bears will be..." The head of security trailed off. Those three black bears were one of the zoo’s few remaining attractions. If they were killed, the zoo’s visitor numbers would be cut in half, at the very least.

"Saving the child is what’s important! We can’t worry about that now. Call them again and tell them to hurry!" Director Dong had watched these three black bears grow up; he didn’t want anything to happen to them either. But things had already come to this. Saving the child was the most important thing.

"But the child is so young. If he’s forced to watch three black bears die right in front of him, won’t that leave him with psychological trauma?" Shen Yibin couldn’t help but interject. ’This isn’t a movie. Forcing such a young child to witness such a cruel and bloody scene would surely terrify him.’

"My poor baby..." Hearing this, the child’s mother collapsed to the ground. A short distance away, the father’s struggles grew more violent. For his son’s sake, he was willing to fight the ferocious black bears himself.

"I know all that, but what other choice do we have now?" Director Dong sighed. He had submitted countless reports to his superiors about the zoo’s dilapidated facilities but hadn’t received a single cent. He and his staff could only make temporary patches, but he never imagined it would lead to a problem this severe.

"Mr. Shen, do you have a solution?" In their desperation, they were clutching at straws, turning directly to Shen Yibin for help.

’What good ideas could I possibly have? Sure, I’m raising a panda, but pandas and black bears are completely different things, okay?’ Huh? The thought of pandas made Shen Yibin subconsciously glance over to where Hah’Er had been. The sight gave him a jolt. ’Where did Hah’Er go?’

’What the hell, Hah’Er, what are you doing?!’ He saw Hah’Er sprawled out right where the child had fallen, craning his neck to peer curiously at the situation in the Xiong Mountain enclosure.

"Hah’Er, get back here!" ’Didn’t he hear them say the railing was rusted through?’ 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"Hmm?" Hah’Er paid Shen Yibin no mind. It seemed to feel a sense of kinship with the dark, furry creature down below, so it stretched out a paw and waved at the little black bear.

Unfortunately, black bears have notoriously poor eyesight. The little cub didn’t see Hah’Er’s gesture and continued to circle and sniff at the child.

"Hmph!" Hah’Er grew frustrated. It squeezed through the same gap the child had fallen through and, before Shen Yibin could lunge for it, slid down the slope.

"Hah’Er!" Shen Yibin was on the verge of tears. ’Now of all times, why did you have to jump into the chaos?!’

Hah’Er landed with a THUMP right beside the little black bear, giving it a fright. This prompted its parents, who had been watching from the side, to rush over to protect their cub. The situation inside the Xiong Mountain enclosure grew even more tense.

"Why did a panda run down there?"

"Where on earth did that panda come from? I never heard that this zoo had a panda."

"Oh no, this is bad! The three black bears look agitated now! They’re not going to attack the child, are they?"

"Get ready to take the shot! All staff, prepare to go down and rescue him!" Director Dong couldn’t wait for the police to arrive. He hurriedly gathered his employees, ready to charge into the Xiong Mountain enclosure. ’Whatever happens, we can’t let anything happen to that child.’

’Oh, Hah’Er, you’ve really caused a disaster this time,’ Shen Yibin thought, a wave of regret washing over him for having brought Hah’Er here.
