Chapter 165: Panda, Black Bear, Bear Child
That reckless kid, always so impulsive, had really gotten himself into a mess this time. In just a few moments, the child’s mother had already collapsed to the ground. If it weren’t for three staff members holding him back, the boy’s father would have probably charged down there himself. The security chief nervously aimed his tranquilizer gun into Xiong Mountain, while the director himself put on a protective suit, preparing to go down and rescue the boy.
’Huh? Something doesn’t seem right.’ "Director, don’t rush! Let’s wait and see!" Shen Yibin quickly stopped Dong. "The black bears don’t seem to have reached their breaking point yet."
Huh? Dong followed his gaze into Xiong Mountain and was stunned as well. Hah’Er, seemingly oblivious to the danger he was in, was still waddling unsteadily toward the little black bear cub.
The little black bear cub was also curiously sizing up this newcomer. It looked a bit like itself, ’but why is it wearing clothes? And why does it have so much white fur?’
"Mmm!" After crawling in front of the little black bear, Hah’Er reached out a paw and gave it a little wave. For some reason, Hah’Er had felt a sense of kinship with the little guy the moment he saw it.
The little black bear, which had been sniffing around the boy, now took a great interest in Hah’Er. It cast the child aside and slowly crawled over to inspect Hah’Er. It reached out a paw and gently touched Hah’Er’s nose, then touched its own, as if to say, ’Why is your nose so much smaller than mine?’
Hah’Er was also carefully observing the little cub. He likewise reached out a paw to touch the white patch on the black bear’s chest, then looked down at his own body, as if wondering, ’Why does this fella have so little white fur?’
The two silly-looking creatures just sat there, sizing each other up. They would grunt one moment and squeal with delight the next. It was as if... as if long-lost cousins were examining how much the other had changed.
"Huh? How strange." Dong rubbed his eyes, finding it hard to believe what was happening. The child’s mother had stopped crying and was now watching Hah’Er nervously alongside the father.
"Director, while the cub’s attention is on the panda, should we have a keeper sneak in and get the child out?" the security chief whispered.
"No, don’t make a move yet. Look, even though the cub’s attention is mostly on the panda, it still glances at the child from time to time. The adult black bears are also keeping a close eye on the keepers. We can’t act rashly until their guard is completely down. The child is safe for now, so let’s wait for the police to arrive." Dong couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. Hah’Er’s accidental intervention had bought them precious time.
"Mr. Shen, do you think there’s any way to get your panda to lure the little black bear away from the child?" Dong asked, turning to Shen Yibin. He was pinning his hopes of saving the child on him.
"I’ll do my best," Shen Yibin replied, though he couldn’t make any promises. ’Who knows if this silly furball can pull it off?’ He took a few steps forward, positioning himself above Hah’Er. "Hah’Er, take your new friend over there to play!"
"A roly-poly?" Just as the crowd was waiting with bated breath, hoping Hah’Er would lead the little black bear away, the mischievous kid who had fallen in also recovered from his shock. He looked at Hah’Er with delight, completely forgetting the danger he was in. He got on his knees and crawled toward Hah’Er, apparently wanting to touch him to see if he was a real panda or a stuffed toy.
"Long Tao!" The mother’s heart leaped into her throat again. ’How can this child be so reckless? He was just out of danger, and now he’s serving himself up on a platter!’
"Mmm!" Hah’Er, used to playing with Nuomituan in the park, wasn’t surprised to see Long Tao approaching. He treated him just like Nuomituan, reaching out a paw to gently pat Long Tao’s head.
"Mommy, Mommy, it’s a real panda! You lied and said the zoo didn’t have any pandas! Look, it’s even patting my head!" little Longtao shouted excitedly. The crowd above was floored. ’How can this kid be so completely unaware of the danger?’
Well, so much for the plan to lure the little black bear away. From the looks of this kid, wherever Hah’Er went, he would follow. ’Hey kid, don’t be fooled by how dopey and harmless that little black bear looks. If it gets angry, you won’t stand a chance.’
"Roly-poly, do you want some candy?" Seeing the panda, the mischievous kid was delighted and pulled out some candy from his pocket to share with Hah’Er.
"Mmm!" The moment Hah’Er saw a tasty treat, he forgot everything else. He took the candy, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth. Then he unwrapped a second piece and held it to the little black bear’s mouth. He really was the type to share good things with his buddies.
Hmm? The little black bear leaned in to sniff it, then stuck out its tongue for a lick. It seemed quite pleased with the taste of the candy, then flicked it into its mouth with its tongue and began to CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH. It was no wonder, really. Black bears have always loved honey; they have little resistance to sweet things.
"I have lots and lots more candy! If you play with me, I’ll share it with you, okay?" little Longtao said, looking at Hah’Er with hopeful eyes while rummaging through his pockets for more candy. He was thrilled that Hah’Er liked his gift.
"Mmm~" Hah’Er reached out and patted his head again. Just then, the little black bear finished its candy. It stretched its head forward, getting close to the child and staring at the candy in his hand.
"Hmph!" As if annoyed that it might scare the child, Hah’Er slapped it on the head without warning. The crowd gasped in alarm, and in the distance, the adult black bears sat up.
"Mr. Shen, can you please tell your panda not to do something so dangerous?" Dong, who hadn’t even caught his breath yet, was terrified by Hah’Er’s slap. If the little black bear flew into a rage, the consequences would be dire.
However... what left the audience utterly stunned was that the little black bear didn’t seem angry at all. Instead, it meekly pulled its head back, holding the spot where Hah’Er had slapped it with both paws. It seemed a little wronged, and also a little afraid of Hah’Er. But its eyes never left the candy in little Longtao’s hands.
Hah’Er picked up another piece of candy, unwrapped it, and held it high as if to put it in his own mouth. The little black bear stared at the candy without blinking, wanting it but not daring to try and snatch it from Hah’Er.
Heh heh. Hah’Er gave a silly grin. Just as the candy was about to reach his own mouth, he suddenly stuffed it into the little black bear’s mouth and gave its head a comforting pat.
HAHAHAHAHA! The onlooking crowd was amused by Hah’Er’s antics. Much of the heavy tension that had been hanging over the zoo dissipated. However, Dong and the child’s parents still couldn’t relax their guard. After all, the boy was still inside Xiong Mountain.
