Chapter 31: Chapter 31

Yuuji woke up and made a decision.

Today was going to be normal.

Not academy normal — not "the toast is sentient" normal or "Gerald knocked something over" normal or "a government official is watching your every move" normal. Actually normal. The kind of normal where nothing exploded, nobody issued a formal duel challenge, and the most dramatic thing that happened was someone spilling tea.

He sat up.

[System Notification: Good Morning!]

➤ Today’s Agenda: Classes, Lunch, Free Period

➤ Threat Level: Low

➤ Gate Activity: Dormant (For Now)

➤ Nour’s Schedule: Off-Site Meeting Until Evening

➤ Yuuji’s Chance Of A Normal Day: 34%

➤ That’s The Highest It’s Ever Been!

➤ Congratulations!

"34% is practically a guarantee," Yuuji said, getting dressed with optimism.

From across the room Elira looked up from her grimoire. "You have that face."

"What face."

"The face where you’ve decided something foolish."

"I’ve decided today is going to be normal."

She stared at him.

"...That’s the foolish thing," she confirmed, and went back to reading.

## Breakfast: Suspiciously Uneventful

The cafeteria was loud and warm and smelled like actual food for once — no suspicious gurgling from the stew, no toast with opinions, no enchanted objects with union representation.

Yuuji sat down with eggs, toast, and tea, and felt genuinely good about it.

Kael arrived and sat beside him. Gerald was calm. Seraine arrived looking slightly less exhausted than yesterday. Roux dropped into the seat across from Yuuji with the energy of someone who had composed three songs before 9AM and was ready to tell everyone about them.

"Good morning," Roux announced. "I wrote a ballad."

"About what," Yuuji asked.

"The gate."

"Roux—"

"It’s called ’Gerald and the Dark Below’ and it has four verses and a bridge."

Kael looked up from his tea. "Does Gerald feature prominently?"

"Gerald is the emotional core," Roux said seriously.

Gerald flickered with what could only be described as pride.

[System Notification: Gerald’s Ego]

➤ Currently: Dangerous Levels

➤ Cause: Being Called An Emotional Core

➤ Recommended Action: Do Not Encourage This

➤ Kael’s Response: Absolute Encouragement

➤ Roux’s Response: A Second Verse About Gerald Specifically

"Can we not make the ancient sentient dark flame famous," Yuuji said. "On the grounds that it will make him insufferable."

"He already knocked over my ink pot this morning," Seraine offered.

"See!"

Gerald flickered innocently.

"He says it was an accident," Kael translated.

"It was not an accident," Seraine said.

## Class: Cooperative Spellwork (Again)

Professor Meriton floated into the lecture hall with the energy of someone who had seen too much to be surprised by anything anymore, which at Halcyon Academy was a reasonable survival strategy.

"Today," she said, "we will be practicing Synchronized Casting. You will pair with a partner and attempt to cast a single unified spell using combined mana. Coordination is key. Communication is essential. Try not to explode."

She looked at Yuuji when she said that last part.

"I’ve only exploded twice," he muttered.

"Three times," Elira said beside him.

"The second one was barely an explosion—"

"It took out two desks."

"They were already damaged—"

"Pair up," Meriton called.

[System Notification: Pairing Recommendation]

➤ Optimal Partner For Synchronized Casting: Elira Vortemer

➤ Reason: Highest Compatibility Score

➤ Secondary Reason: She Won’t Let You Explode

➤ Tertiary Reason: You Want To Pick Her Anyway

➤ Just Pick Her, Yuuji.

Yuuji turned to Elira.

She was already looking at him.

"Partners?" he said.

"Obviously," she said.

Across the room Roux caught Leonhart’s eye and mouthed something that looked suspiciously like "told you so." Leonhart looked away with the dignity of a man who had also told someone so but wasn’t going to admit it.

## The Synchronized Casting Incident

The spell was simple in theory.

Two casters, one mana thread between them, combined into a single stable construct. The textbook example was a light orb — clean, safe, basically impossible to mess up.

Yuuji and Elira stood facing each other, hands raised, mana thread glowing faintly between their palms.

"Steady flow," Elira said. "Match my output."

"Matching," Yuuji said, concentrating hard.

The thread brightened.

"Good," she said. "Now shape it. Think of something stable."

Yuuji thought of something stable.

The thread pulsed — and produced a perfect, glowing, gently rotating—

—small replica of Gerald.

Complete with tiny dark flame orbit.

The class went silent.

Elira stared at it.

Yuuji stared at it.

"I panicked," he said.

"You thought of Gerald."

"He was the first stable thing that came to mind."

From across the room the actual Gerald flickered with enormous satisfaction.

[System Notification: Synchronized Casting Result]

➤ Spell Produced: Miniature Gerald Construct

➤ Stability: Perfect (Ironically)

➤ Professor Meriton’s Assessment: Speechless

➤ Gerald’s Assessment: Deeply Pleased

➤ Kael’s Assessment: Emotional

➤ Elira’s Assessment: She’s Going To Think About This Later

"That’s—" Meriton started. Stopped. "That is technically a stable construct."

"Thank you," Yuuji said.

"It looks like Kael’s familiar."

"It’s a coincidence."

The miniature Gerald bobbed gently in the air between them. Elira reached out and poked it once with one finger. It flickered and spun in a little circle.

Something crossed her face. Soft and surprised and gone quickly.

"It’s kind of cute," she said, very quietly, like she hadn’t meant to say it out loud.

[System Notification: Elira Said "Cute"]

➤ About Something Yuuji Made

➤ Unintentionally

➤ She Is Now Looking At The Ceiling

➤ Her Ears Are Pink

➤ Miniature Gerald Is Still Spinning

➤ Today Is A Good Day

Yuuji looked at the miniature Gerald.

Smiled at it.

"Yeah," he said. "Kind of."

## Lunch: The Roux Situation

By lunch the ballad had spread.

Not because Roux had performed it — he hadn’t, yet — but because Roux had told three people about it, those three people had told five people each, and now half the cafeteria was asking when the Gerald ballad was going to be performed publicly and whether they could request specific verses.

Gerald, for his part, was orbiting Kael with what could only be called a celebrity aura.

"This is your fault," Yuuji told Roux.

"I prefer to think of it as Gerald’s moment," Roux said serenely.

"Gerald destroyed my sock."

"Artists are complicated."

Kael looked quietly delighted in the way he looked quietly delighted about everything — from the outside you couldn’t tell, but Yuuji had learned to read the slight softness around his eyes that meant he was genuinely happy about something.

"You’re pleased," Yuuji said to him.

"Gerald deserves recognition," Kael said simply.

"Gerald is sentient dark flame that named himself."

"And now he has a ballad." Kael’s voice was entirely serious. "This is a good day for him."

[System Notification: Gerald — Happiness Level]

➤ Current Status: Unprecedented

➤ Gerald Has Never Had A Ballad Before

➤ Gerald Would Like More Ballads

➤ Kael Agrees

➤ Yuuji Is Outnumbered On This Issue

Seraine, sitting quietly at the end of the table, let out a short laugh.

Everyone looked at him.

He looked slightly surprised at himself — like he hadn’t expected it to come out. Then he shook his head slightly, and the laugh settled into something smaller but real.

"Sorry," he said. "It’s just—" He gestured at Gerald, at Roux already humming what was presumably the ballad, at Kael levitating slightly with quiet pride. "It’s a lot."

"Too much?" Yuuji asked.

Seraine thought about it. "No," he said. "Just — a lot. In a good way."

[System Notification: Seraine Thorne — Status Update]

➤ First Genuine Laugh Since Enrollment

➤ Cause: Gerald’s Ballad Situation

➤ Note: He Needed That

➤ Note: Keep An Eye On Him

➤ Not Because He’s A Problem

➤ Because He’s A Person Who Forgot To Laugh For Three Months

## Free Period: The Courtyard

The afternoon was warm enough to sit outside, which almost never happened at Halcyon where the weather had strong opinions and expressed them aggressively.

Yuuji sat on the courtyard bench with his face tilted up toward the sun, eyes closed, doing absolutely nothing productive and feeling extremely good about it.

Footsteps approached.

He opened one eye.

Elira sat down beside him. Book in hand but not open. Which for Elira was basically the equivalent of anyone else lying down and staring at clouds.

They sat in comfortable silence for a while.

"Today was normal," Yuuji said eventually.

Elira said. "You synchronized cast a miniature Gerald."

"That’s within normal parameters for this school."

She considered it. "Fair."

Another silence. Warm and easy.

"Yuuji."

"Yeah."

"The miniature Gerald." A pause. Very careful. "You thought of something stable and you thought of Gerald."

"Panic response," he said. "Already established."

"Gerald is stable to you," she said. "Kael is stable to you. This whole ridiculous group of people is—" She stopped. "You’ve only been here a few months."

He opened both eyes and looked at her.

She was looking at her unopened book, expression doing the thing it did when she was being precise about something that mattered.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I have."

She was quiet for a moment.

"Me too," she said. Even quieter.

It wasn’t a big statement. It wasn’t dramatic. It was just Elira being exactly as honest as she could manage, which was always more honest than it looked because she made every word work hard before she let it out.

Yuuji looked back at the sky.

His chest was doing something warm and inconvenient.

[System Notification: Bond Deepened — Elira Vortemer]

➤ Hidden Trait: Fiercely Loyal — 95% Unlocked

➤ She Just Said "Me Too"

➤ Do You Understand What That Means For Her

➤ She Doesn’t Say Things Like That

➤ Yuuji

➤ Hey

➤ Yuuji

"I hear you," Yuuji told the system internally.

[System: Good.]

➤ Just Making Sure.

➤ Don’t Waste It.

He didn’t say anything else.

Neither did she.

They just sat there in the warm afternoon light while somewhere inside the academy Roux was performing the first verse of the Gerald ballad to an audience of thirty students and one very satisfied piece of sentient dark flame.

It was, by any reasonable measure, a good day.

[System Notification: Daily Summary]

➤ Explosions: Zero

➤ Duels: Zero

➤ Government Officials: Off-Site

➤ Gate Activity: Dormant

➤ Miniature Geralds Created: One

➤ Elira Said "Me Too": One
