Chapter 32: Chapter 32

Seraine was quiet at breakfast.

Not unusual — he’d been quiet since he told them about his mother, the particular quiet of someone carrying something they’d finally put down for one afternoon and then picked back up again in the morning. Yuuji had noticed it the way he’d learned to notice things at Halcyon: not by looking directly but by the shape of the absence.

He ate his eggs. Didn’t say anything.

Across the table Roux was still humming the Gerald ballad under his breath. Kael was reading something that looked like it had opinions about being read. Elira had her grimoire open but her eyes were on Seraine in the particular way she watched things she was calculating.

Gerald orbited the table once, slowly, and then drifted toward Seraine’s end.

Seraine looked at the dark flame.

Gerald flickered once. Soft.

Seraine looked back at his untouched food.

## Morning Classes

Seraine showed up to first period.

He took notes. Answered when called on. Performed adequately in the practical component. Nothing was wrong exactly — nothing you could point to and say *that*, that’s the thing.

But he was somewhere else.

Yuuji had spent enough time gaming to recognize the look — the face of someone who had made a decision and was just waiting for the right moment to execute it. The kind of settled calm that wasn’t peace but resolution.

He fell into step beside Seraine after class.

"You good?" he asked.

"Fine," Seraine said. Easy. Practiced.

"Sure," Yuuji said.

They walked in silence for a moment.

"She’s been down there for three months," Seraine said quietly. Not to Yuuji specifically. Just out loud, the way you said things when you’d been keeping them in too long. "If the gate is waking up — if that’s why she went — then every day it gets more active is another day she’s—"

He stopped.

"Yeah," Yuuji said.

Seraine looked at him. Something moved across his expression — a question he didn’t ask. Then he nodded once and walked ahead.

## Lunch

Seraine ate this time.

That was good. That was normal. Yuuji noted it the way he’d been noting everything — filed and stored and sitting in the back of his mind with a low hum of attention.

Roux performed two verses of the Gerald ballad for a table of first years who received it with the enthusiasm of people who had never encountered sentient dark flame and thought it sounded extremely cool rather than extremely complicated.

Gerald basked.

Kael watched Gerald bask with the quiet satisfaction of a parent at a school play.

Elira sat beside Yuuji and stole a piece of his bread without asking, which she’d started doing sometime in the last week and which he’d started expecting without consciously deciding to. He pushed the rest of the bread toward her without looking. She took it without comment.

"You’re smiling at your soup," Elira said.

"It’s good soup," Yuuji said.

She looked at the soup. "It’s the same soup as always."

"It’s growing on me."

She gave him a look that said she knew exactly what he was smiling about and had chosen to let him have it, which was somehow more flustering than being called out.

Across the table Seraine excused himself quietly.

"Bathroom," he said.

Nobody thought anything of it.

## Free Period

An hour later Roux asked if anyone had seen Seraine.

Yuuji looked up from his book.

"He went to the bathroom at lunch," he said.

"That was an hour ago," Roux said.

The low hum in the back of Yuuji’s mind got louder.

He stood up.

"His room?" Elira said, already closing her grimoire.

They checked his room.

Empty. Bed made. Uniform jacket folded neatly over the chair.

Yuuji stood in the doorway and looked at the folded jacket for a moment.

You didn’t fold your jacket if you were coming back soon.

"His bag is gone," Kael said from inside the room. He was looking at the desk. "His notes too. The ones about his mother."

Gerald moved to the doorway beside Yuuji and flickered low and dark.

"He went looking for her," Yuuji said.

Elira was already moving.

Kael was already moving.

Gerald surged forward — not drifting, not orbiting, moving with the fast dark purpose of something that knew exactly where it was going.

Yuuji ran.

Down the east corridor. Down the maintenance stairs. Down the stabilization chamber steps two at a time, past the dampening runes and the containment glyphs and the soft blue light of the stone dais, to the back wall where there was a door that wasn’t on any official map of the academy.

It was open.

Just slightly. Just enough.

Cold air drifted through it — the specific cold that had nothing to do with temperature and everything to do with something old and large and patient on the other side.

Yuuji put his hand on the door.

Pushed it open.

Stone steps descended into dark.

At the bottom, far below, something pulsed with faint light — rhythmic, slow, like a heartbeat that had been waiting a very long time to be heard.

And on the third step down, where it had fallen and not been picked up—

Seraine’s academy badge.

Yuuji looked at the badge on the step.

Looked at the dark below.

Looked back at Elira and Kael behind him — her eyes steady, his expression set, Gerald burning low and certain at his wrist.

He picked up the badge.

Held it.

Exhaled once.

And somewhere below them, in the dark where the gate breathed its slow old breath—

The light pulsed.

And went out.
