Legacy of the God of War
Chapter 276: The Lins
Madam Jiang’s eyes burned with fury as she turned her gaze upon Tang Ziyi, her lips curled into a snarl of disgust. "You," she spat, pointing an accusing finger at him. "How dare you show your face here, you bastard child?"
Master Jiang flinched at his wife’s venomous words, but before he could intervene, Madam Jiang rounded on him. "And you, Honglin! Why didn’t you take that... that thing to an orphanage in some far-off city? Why did you have to burden the Tangs with your mistake?"
Master Jiang’s expression was pained, his eyes pleading for understanding. "The Tangs were our friends, and I knew they would take good care of him. It was the best option at the time."
"The best option?" Madam Jiang’s voice rose to a shrill screech. "You brought shame upon our family, and then you had the audacity to foist your illegitimate spawn onto our friends? What were you thinking?"
The room descended into chaos as the Jiangs erupted into a bitter argument, their voices rising in a cacophony of recriminations and accusations. Li Chen slammed his fist on the table, the resounding thud silencing the room.
"Enough!" he bellowed, his face flushed with anger. "If you’re going to have this argument, do it in your own home. I will not have you disrespecting Ziyi or the Tangs under my roof."
Jiang Xiaofeng, who had been watching the exchange with a mixture of disbelief and revulsion, turned to his father, his eyes narrowed. "Dad, is this true? Is this... thing here my brother?"
Master Jiang’s shoulders slumped, and he nodded solemnly, unable to meet his son’s accusatory gaze.
A voice rang out from the adjacent room, cutting through the tension like a knife. "Don’t you dare call him a thing!" Madam Tang’s voice was laced with maternal fury as she emerged, her eyes flashing dangerously.
Madam Jiang’s lips curled into a sneer as she took in the sight of the formidable matriarch. "So, you’re the one who raised him? You took in my husband’s bastard child?"
Madam Tang’s chin lifted defiantly, her gaze unwavering. "You didn’t want him in your household, and your husband gave up all parental rights the day he gave him to my late husband. He is my son, not a ’thing’."
Li Chen stepped forward, his expression thunderous. "Master Jiang, I would appreciate it if you and your family left now, before I have the guards remove you forcibly."
Jiang Xiaofeng’s face twisted with contempt as he glared at Tang Ziyi. "I don’t care about this... this product of infidelity. I want my sister back, Li Chen. Where is she?"
Li Chen’s jaw tightened, his patience wearing thin. "I’ve already told you, I don’t know where your sister is. Now leave, before I lose what little respect I have left for you."
Turning to one of the guards stationed nearby, Li Chen nodded curtly. "Escort the Jiangs out and make sure they are never allowed back onto these premises."
The guard stepped forward, grasping Jiang Xiaofeng’s arm firmly. "This way, please," he said, his tone brooking no argument.
Madam Jiang cast one final, withering glance at Tang Ziyi before turning on her heel. "I will deal with this later," she hissed. "For now, I want my daughter back home."
Master Jiang’s gaze lingered on Tang Ziyi, a flicker of remorse passing over his features. "Jiang Xiaolin is your sister," he said quietly. "If you have any information about her whereabouts, please, help us. We are one blood."
Tang Ziyi met his father’s gaze unflinchingly, his expression unreadable. "I don’t have a sister," he said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion.
With a defeated sigh, Master Jiang followed his wife and son out of Sun Lixia’s villa, the room descending into an uneasy silence in their wake. Tang Junjie stepped forward, his brow creased with concern.
"Brother, are you okay?" he asked quietly, placing a comforting hand on Tang Ziyi’s shoulder.
Tang Ziyi mustered a small smile, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and resolution. "I’m okay, bro. They don’t bother me."
Madam Tang’s expression softened as she regarded her adopted son, her heart aching for the pain he must be feeling. "I’m sorry, Ziyi," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
But Tang Ziyi shook his head, his gaze resolute. "For what, Mom? For raising me so well when my own biological father and mother abandoned me? That’s not something to apologize for, okay?"
Zhang Mei sighed deeply, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Well," she said, forcing a smile. "Let’s just continue with our day, shall we?"
Li Chen’s gaze lingered on Tang Ziyi, his brow furrowed with concern. "Are you sure you’re okay?" he asked, his voice tinged with worry.
Tang Ziyi met his brother-in-law’s gaze squarely, his eyes clear and determined. "Certain, Brother Chen. I knew he was my father two months ago, so I’ve had time to process it."
Li Chen nodded slowly, his respect for the young man growing by the minute. He clapped a hand on Tang Ziyi’s shoulder, his expression one of admiration. "You’re a strong man, Ziyi. Stronger than most, myself included."
Tang Junjie grinned, slinging an arm around his brother’s shoulders. "That’s my bro for you. Tough as nails, and twice as resilient."
A tentative knock at the door broke the moment, and all heads turned as one of the maids poked her head into the room. "Master Li, Miss Zhang, there are some visitors here to see you."
Li Chen exchanged a glance with Zhang Mei, his brow furrowing. "Who is it?"
The maid hesitated, her expression uncertain. "It’s... it’s the Lins, Master. Lin Dongchen and his wife, Cen Yingying."
The door swung open, and Lin Dongchen strode into the room, his expression thunderous. Cen Yingying followed close behind, her face pale and drawn, her eyes flickering nervously around the room.
"You," Lin Dongchen growled, pointing an accusing finger at Li Chen. "We need to talk. Now."
Li Chen’s brow furrowed in confusion as he regarded the unfamiliar couple. "I’m sorry, do I know you?" he asked politely.
Lin Dongchen’s eyes narrowed, his fists clenching at his sides. "Don’t play dumb with me. It’s about my daughter, Yuhuan. She’s... she’s gone missing."
A collective intake of breath filled the room as the weight of the revelation hung in the air. Li Chen’s expression remained bewildered, casting a questioning glance at Zhang Mei.
"I’m afraid there’s been a misunderstanding," he began slowly. "I don’t actually know who your daughter is..."
Before he could finish, the door burst open once more, and a man who bore a striking resemblance to Li Chen entered, his expression one of barely contained panic.
"Dongchen, Yingying," the newcomer gasped, his eyes wild. "What’s going on? Have you found Yuhuan?"
Li Chen’s eyes widened as he took in the sight of his twin brother, Li Xinjie. Understanding dawned, and he turned back to the distraught couple.
"You must have mistaken me for my brother, Xinjie," he explained carefully. "I’m Li Chen, Xinjie’s twin."
Lin Dongchen’s eyes flickered between the two brothers, realization slowly sinking in. "You... you’re not the one who’s been seeing my daughter?"
Li Xinjie’s shoulders sagged, and he shook his head wearily. "I’m so sorry, Dongchen, Yingying. Yuhuan and I... have been seeing each other, but I have no idea where she is."
Cen Yingying’s lips trembled, and she buried her face in her hands, her body shaking with sobs. "Three days," she whispered brokenly. "She’s been gone for three days."
Zhang Mei stepped forward, her expression one of gentle concern. "Have you contacted the police?" she asked, placing a comforting hand on Yingying’s shoulder.
Lin Dongchen nodded, his expression grim. "Of course we have. But they haven’t been able to find any leads."
Li Chen exchanged a meaningful glance with his brother, a silent understanding passing between them. The pieces were starting to fall into place, and it was becoming increasingly clear that the disappearances of Jiang Xiaolin, Lin Qingqing, and now Cen Yuhuan were connected – but how, and by whom, remained a mystery.
"I promise, we’ll do everything we can to help find Yuhuan," Li Xinjie vowed, his voice thick with emotion. "She means the world to me, and I won’t rest until she’s safely home."
Lin Dongchen’s shoulders sagged with a mixture of relief and trepidation. "Thank you," he murmured, his voice barely audible. "Thank you both."
As the Lins departed, a heavy silence descended upon the room, each person lost in their own thoughts. Tang Ziyi exchanged a meaningful glance with Li Chen and Li Xinjie, a silent understanding passing between them.
The path ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, and they would need to tread carefully if they hoped to unravel the tangled web of lies and deceit that threatened to engulf them all. But one thing was certain: they would stop at nothing to find the missing woman and bring her home safely, no matter the cost.
