Chapter 40: The Burden of a Secret

Sun Fang sat in his car on his way to the office when his phone rang. Dr. Bo’s voice came through the other end, "The results are out, you have to come and get them."

Sun Fang’s heart raced with excitement and anticipation. He didn’t utter a word in response to Dr. Bo. Instead, he instructed his driver, "Drive me to the hospital immediately."

The driver promptly acknowledged, "Yes, sir," and made a U-turn, heading straight to the hospital. Sun Fang’s thoughts swirled as the hospital drew nearer. He couldn’t help but wonder about the outcome of the kinship test and whether Li Chen might be the son of their long-lost aunt. His mind was a flurry of questions, hopes, and fears, and a subtle headache began to creep in.

When they arrived at the hospital, the driver alerted Sun Fang, saying, "Sir, your brother’s men keep following us."

Sun Fang, with a sense of annoyance in his voice, replied, "Let them be for now. I have other things to deal with."

Sun Fang was well aware of his brother’s suspicions, but at this moment, he simply didn’t care. His sole focus was on the results that would soon be in his hands, allowing him to plan the next steps.

Pushing open the door to Dr. Bo’s office, he found the doctor seated, engrossed in other files. Dr. Bo glanced up and remarked, "Hey, I know your family sponsors this hospital, but that doesn’t give you the right to barge in like this."

Sun Fang was in no mood for pleasantries and responded curtly, "Cut it out, give me the results."

Dr. Bo, exasperated, said, "Look at you, not even saying please."

Sun Fang, unapologetic, retorted, "Well, I paid for it. I see no reason to say please."

Dr. Bo rolled his eyes, retrieved the results from a cabinet in the corner, and handed them over to Sun Fang, who eagerly took the file and sat down to read it.

As Sun Fang held the document in his trembling hands, he carefully scanned its contents, his eyes anxiously darting across the pages. He moved through the document until he reached the results section. There, he paused for over five minutes, his mind racing as he tried to process the information.

Finally, Sun Fang turned to Dr. Bo, the urgency in his voice evident as he asked, "What does this mean?"

Dr. Bo, appearing somewhat smug, remarked, "Now you want my help."

Sun Fang, his impatience evident, urged him to continue, "Talk."

Dr. Bo, displaying a calm demeanor, responded, "Hey, chill, boy. Let me see." With that, he took the document from Sun Fang’s shaky hands and began to examine it closely. Dr. Bo studied the details within the document and then explained, "The percentage here clearly indicates that the two owners of the strands of hair tested are related."

Sun Fang was still seeking clarification, and he inquired, "How so?"

Dr. Bo elucidated, "Since the percentage is not too high, they are not parent and child, but they could be uncle and nephew."

Sun Fang, his mind racing with thoughts and emotions, questioned, "Are you sure that the two people are related?"

Dr. Bo reassured him, saying, "You can get a second opinion if you don’t believe me, but trust me, the results will be the same."

Grateful for the information, Sun Fang expressed his thanks. As he prepared to leave Dr. Bo’s office, he turned back, a note of urgency in his voice, and requested, "Please don’t tell my brother about this."

Dr. Bo agreed, "No problem." Sun Fang left the office with a slight smirk on his face, leaving behind the intrigue and questions that the test results had stirred.

As Sun Fang left the hospital, he quickly made his way to his car, a sense of urgency in his steps. It wasn’t long before Sun Gang’s men, who had been tailing him, called to report his movements.

"Second Young Master just left Dr. Bo’s office with a file," one of the men said, concern evident in his voice.

Sun Gang’s brow furrowed, and he replied, "Go to Dr. Bo’s office. I want to know why he was there and the contents of that file. I don’t have a good feeling about this."

Sun Gang’s men arrived at the hospital and barged into Dr. Bo’s office, their intimidating presence taking the doctor by surprise. Dr. Bo, taken aback by the sudden intrusion, questioned, "What do you want from me?"

The leader of the men, a formidable figure, answered, "The information on the file Second Young Master Sun left with... His older brother is inquiring."

Dr. Bo, mindful of doctor-patient confidentiality, maintained his stance, saying, "I’m sorry, I can’t divulge confidential information."

The man moved closer to Dr. Bo, who grew increasingly alarmed. Dr. Bo implored, "Hey, what are you doing?"

The man’s voice remained stern as he warned, "I have no intention of hurting you, but if you persist in being stubborn, I might do something I’d rather not. So, are you going to tell me, or do you choose to lose one of your precious hands and never enter the operating room again?"

The tense standoff in Dr. Bo’s office hung in the balance as the doctor weighed his options, unsure of how to proceed.

The man grew impatient and said, "I don’t have all day, my good doctor."

Dr. Bo sighed in resignation and handed over the copy of the document. The man took it and demanded an explanation.

Dr. Bo reluctantly complied, "Sun Fang came here with two strands of hair for DNA testing."

The man inquired further, "And what were the results?"

Dr. Bo clenched his jaw and revealed, "The two people are related."

The man pressed, "Who were the people tested?"

Dr. Bo retorted, "I don’t know. Like I said, he came with two strands of hair. How would I know whose hair they belong to?"

The man issued a warning, "If you’re hiding anything from me, it won’t end well for you."

Dr. Bo nodded, acknowledging the threat. "I know very well what Sun Gang is capable of."

With that, the men left Dr. Bo’s office, taking the file with them. Dr. Bo immediately picked up his phone to make a call. On the other end, a woman’s voice, tinged with age, answered.

She asked, "What’s wrong?"

Dr. Bo hesitated before replying, "Sun Fang knows, and now Sun Gang might find out soon."

The woman inquired, "Who do you trust more, between them?"

Dr. Bo confided, "I trust Sun Fang more."

The woman responded, "Good. Now, call him and tell him. He needs to protect the boy."

Dr. Bo sighed and asked, "How long do you plan to stay hidden like this, Aunt?"

The woman’s voice held a mix of determination and worry as she replied, "I have to protect my boy. Those who tried to kill me might find him soon. I just want him to be protected."

Dr. Bo acknowledged her concern and said, "I understand."

After the phone call with the woman, Dr. Bo sighed and muttered to himself, "I wonder how long this will take." He then decided to make another call, this time to Sun Fang.

"Hey, buddy," he said, "your brother’s men barged into my office after you left."

Sun Fang’s voice was filled with concern as he asked, "What did they want?"

Dr. Bo explained, "Obviously information about what you were doing here."

Sun Fang responded with a sigh, "I see."

Dr. Bo continued, "I gave them the file. I had no choice. I had to choose between the file and my hands. You see, I still enjoy being a doctor. I can’t lose my hands."

Sun Fang assured him, "I understand. Don’t worry."

Dr. Bo expressed his gratitude, "Thank you for understanding. Try not to work with me again. Your brother scares me."

Sun Fang replied confidently, "Don’t worry about him. I’ll handle him."

Dr. Bo warned one last time, "You better do that."

After the call ended, Dr. Bo sat in his office, deep in thought, contemplating the situation and the potential consequences of his involvement in the unfolding events.

Dr. Bo had grown up without his mother, raised solely by his father. He never knew much about his father’s work, but when his father passed away, a woman claiming to be his father’s former colleague appeared and took him in. While they didn’t live together because she preferred her solitude, she provided for him in every possible way, from his high school education through college. Under her care, he enjoyed a level of comfort and security he had never experienced, even when his father was alive.

During his college years, Dr. Bo discovered a treasure trove of books in his father’s study, all related to genetics and molecular biology. It made him suspect that his father had been deeply involved in these fields, which inspired him to follow a similar path, both in honor of his father and out of a genuine interest in the subject.

Upon graduating, the woman who had supported him helped him secure a job at a hospital in a foreign city. However, on the day he was about to start his new job, she contacted him with information that shook his world. Dr. Bo learned shocking details about the woman’s past and the nature of her work, things he was sworn to keep secret. Despite the unexpected revelation, Dr. Bo didn’t mind working in a city far from his own, essentially like a covert operative, as he was determined to repay the woman’s kindness by fulfilling the unique task she had entrusted to him.
