Chapter 41: Undercover Guardian

Li Chen had developed a routine of morning jogs and park exercises. Each day, he made his way to the nearby park, a serene haven amidst the bustling city. The fresh morning air and the sight of people going about their routines provided a calming atmosphere, an escape from his busy life.

One crisp morning, as he was going through his usual stretching routine, a young man approached him. The stranger wore a friendly smile, his eyes reflecting sincerity. "Hello there," he greeted Li Chen. "Mind if I join you?"

Li Chen, though slightly surprised by the request, welcomed the company with a nod. He introduced himself, "I’m Li Chen."

The newcomer replied, "I’m Xu Zhonghao. Nice to meet you, Li Chen."

Li Chen’s rigorous exercise routine had often left him solitary in his endeavors. However, the polite and enthusiastic Xu Zhonghao was a breath of fresh air. With a smile, Li Chen said, "It’s nice to meet you too. You’re here for your morning workout as well?"

Zhonghao nodded, "Yes, I love the park. It’s an excellent place to stay fit and meet new people."

Li Chen couldn’t argue with that; he was already enjoying their conversation. Over the next few days, the two of them became jogging buddies. Li Chen learned that Xu Zhonghao was a university student studying business management, full of energy and passionate about life.

As their morning meetings continued, Li Chen decided to take things a step further. He believed that their shared interest in fitness could serve as the foundation for a new friendship. So, one morning, after their routine, Li Chen asked, "Would you like to come to my place tomorrow? We can do some more extensive workouts."

Zhonghao’s eyes brightened, and he readily accepted the invitation. "That sounds fantastic, Li Chen. I’d love to."

The next day, Xu Zhonghao arrived at Li Chen’s house, carrying his gym bag. Their training session began with a series of stretches. Li Chen displayed a high level of expertise, having maintained a strict exercise regimen. Xu Zhonghao, on the other hand, was eager to learn and follow his newfound friend’s lead.

As they exercised side by side, Li Chen realized that they shared a common goal. Though their backgrounds were different, they both sought discipline and self-improvement. He noticed Xu Zhonghao’s determination to keep up and adapt to the workouts.

Li Chen took it upon himself to offer guidance, sharing workout techniques and tips. He was a perfectionist and expected nothing less from his companion. To his delight, Xu Zhonghao proved to be a quick learner, his determination shining through.

Between sets, they found opportunities to chat and learn more about each other. Xu Zhonghao came from a modest family, and his parents ran a small local restaurant. He was the first in his family to attend university and harbored dreams of helping his parents expand their business.

Li Chen, on the other hand, shared snippets of his past, mentioning his time at the Gu family and his recent divorce. He wasn’t one to reveal too much about his personal life, but he felt a growing sense of trust in Xu Zhonghao.

The days turned into two weeks, and their morning workouts evolved into a significant part of both their lives. The bond between the two young men deepened, solidifying their friendship. They were not only fitness partners but confidants who supported each other in their respective endeavors.

One day, as they took a break during their workout, Xu Zhonghao turned to Li Chen and said, "I have to thank you, Li Chen. You’ve not only helped me improve my fitness, but you’ve also been a great friend."

Li Chen smiled warmly, "The feeling is mutual, Zhonghao."

One sunny afternoon, Xu Zhonghao bid farewell to Li Chen after their training session in Li Chen’s modest backyard. They had spent the morning practicing martial arts and discussing various techniques, enjoying the camaraderie that had developed between them.

As Xu Zhonghao left Li Chen’s house, he couldn’t help but smile to himself. The last few weeks had been quite enjoyable, and he had come to appreciate Li Chen’s company. He decided to call his contact, a man who had been guiding him throughout the mission.

The phone rang a few times before a voice filled with amusement answered, "Hey, how’s your mission going?"

Xu Zhonghao leaned against his car and replied, "It’s a bit boring, but I’m hanging in there. Can’t say no to the money, can I?"

The voice on the other end of the line chuckled. "Good. Ma’am trusts you to protect him."

Xu Zhonghao nodded even though it couldn’t be seen over the phone. "Even though he’s not someone who needs protection."

The voice responded, intrigued, "What do you mean?"

Xu Zhonghao glanced around to ensure no one could overhear his conversation. "He’s strong, actually too strong. If he had years of training, he could take me down in one blow."

The voice on the other end of the line grew thoughtful. "That is impressive. More reason to keep him protected. You know the organization would want him if they spotted him, and Ma’am doesn’t want that."

Xu Zhonghao replied, "I know. You’ve been telling me almost every day how important this young man is to Ma’am, and I’ll protect him."

The man on the line asked, "So why did you call?"

Xu Zhonghao hesitated before admitting, "Well, I wanted to know how long I’ll have to stay here and if I’m allowed to start a small, fake life. I don’t mind the job, but it would be good to have a bit more normalcy."

The man laughed heartily, amused by Xu Zhonghao’s request. "You seem to be enjoying the quiet life."

Xu Zhonghao acknowledged, "Can’t lie and say I don’t."

The conversation concluded with Xu Zhonghao’s recommitment to the mission, understanding the significance of his role. The lines between duty, loyalty, and personal connection had become blurred, and as the days passed, he had come to realize that his mission was more complex and intertwined with his emotions than he had initially thought.

Xu Zhonghao, once a skilled assassin, found himself in a peculiar situation. He had been ranked third in his organization, and his previous assignments had primarily involved eliminating targets. The request to protect someone was unusual, and it came from the very top of the hierarchy – his boss.

Initially, Xu Zhonghao was angry. The idea of moving from bustling Beijing to Shanghai to serve as a bodyguard seemed like a waste of his abilities. Yet, the promise of a substantial financial incentive was too tempting to pass up.

The mission parameters were clear: he had to befriend the target, Li Chen, and ensure he was constantly by Li Chen’s side. Failure was not an option, and Xu Zhonghao understood the severe consequences that awaited him if he didn’t carry out this peculiar mission successfully.

However, over time, Xu Zhonghao found himself growing more comfortable with the situation. Spending time with Li Chen was not as tedious as he had initially imagined. In fact, he had developed a certain admiration for the man he was tasked to protect. It was intriguing to observe Li Chen’s extraordinary martial arts skills.

Xu Zhonghao had been a martial arts enthusiast himself since the age of eight. He had never come across someone with Li Chen’s level of expertise and unique techniques. There was a sense of unpredictability in Li Chen’s movements that fascinated him. Every training session with Li Chen introduced new moves and techniques that Xu Zhonghao had never seen or learned in all his years of training.

As they sparred and exchanged knowledge, a strange bond formed between them. Xu Zhonghao found himself both challenged and exhilarated by Li Chen’s capabilities, and his resentment about the mission slowly gave way to a growing respect for the man he was assigned to protect. With Li Chen, he had discovered a partner in the art of combat, a formidable and unorthodox teacher. The days of intense training and their developing friendship made Xu Zhonghao’s mission more complex than he had ever anticipated.

The voice on the other end of the phone call was stern and insistent. "Listen, you can enjoy the quiet life, but make sure you stick by the boy’s side. Don’t forget why you’re there. Do you understand?"

Xu Zhonghao responded promptly, "Yes, I do. Don’t worry."

The conversation took an unexpected turn as Xu Zhonghao continued, "By the way, there are some men who have been spying on him."

The voice on the phone expressed surprise and concern, "What? Why didn’t you mention this earlier?"

Xu Zhonghao calmly explained, "I only report what I can’t handle, and besides, I don’t feel any evil aura from them. It’s like they’re just spying on him without any hostile intent. I don’t know why."

The voice on the phone, seemingly the contact overseeing his mission, suggested, "Can’t you hack their phones and gather information? You’re a trained assassin, and you know everything about technology."

Xu Zhonghao sighed and replied, "Can you just let me protect him my own way? I promise nothing will happen to him. I value my life, and I don’t want to be on the boss’s hit list."

The voice conceded, "Glad you know what’s at stake. Fine, do what you see fit."

With the call ended, Xu Zhonghao muttered to himself, "As if I would allow myself to fail such an easy mission." He started his car and drove to the apartment he had been renting, all the while pondering the mysterious men who were spying on Li Chen.
