Master Of None
Chapter 2860. The Real Reason
"That’s not the only thing you wanted though?" Remey knew the entire time that Onyx would not have sought her out if he didn’t have more that he wanted help with.
"I wanted to do more than one thing. That potion would have harmed some people but mostly it was a way to set an example to everyone. That there are rules and the right way to do things. Plenty of the younger generations of each race are doing similar things in the name of growth and advancement."
This was a concern that every leader within Genesis was handling and so far they had been doing so well. Making sure that there was not a devolution in to the same things that the immortal chasing race did was important.
Growth came because everyone worked together and did so with the best interests of one another. It did not come from harming one another and constantly taking while only rewarding those who harmed others to make those advancements. It was simple but clear.
"But you also?" Remey waited to see what Onyx had to say. She was very interested in what he was thinking and what he might need from here.
"I want to fight one of the elder dragons."
She coughed, choking on the air as she tried to take a breath. This wasn’t something that Onyx would have to say if it wasn’t for a damn good reason. She also knew that he would not causally come to her unless she could do something like that or manage to help him with it.
Besides all that, it wasn’t a normal thing for anyone to ask, let alone Onyx who was always seemingly better put together than most people. If Midnight asked or even Remey herself wanted to causally spar with a dragon, then sure, that would make a lot more sense.
Onyx though? What would make him wish to fight a dragon?"
"I am not saying this because I believe I am the most powerful leader within Genesis, but I have found that some of the elder dragons are looking down on me. They also look down on the goblin race, gray haired spider race, and even the harpy race. But they have made exceptions for the monster races because they were not able to develop as long. They have not done so for myself and I do not wish to be disrespected in front of my people."
Now it was clear that something had happened and Remey was already feeling the raging anger building. "Who would be stupid enough to disrespect you? They should know you are family and I will come and break their weak scales in to dust for potions." Remey was already growling out the words holding herself together.
"I am going to deal with it myself. It was one of the half fire dragons and half wind dragons. They are an elder that was able to learn from their parents before handling a territory. They are living nearby where I have my territory and they have made it clear that we are not to take to the skies because they own them. We are not to bring merchants through without their permission. They are acting as if they are in charge of everything moving to my people and I will not have it. When I spoke to them they made it clear that I did not have authority over them because my race is young and I am just starting a movement that may die out."
The curling body of Onyx slowly became larger as his own emotions showed. But that calmed Remey down. She wasn’t looking at Onyx as just family, she saw him as a leader who felt that their people were being treated unfairly. He wasn’t angry because he was disrespected, but all the efforts of everyone he was protecting and raising were being belittled.
"I will advocate that you handle the matter in the same ways as other dragons do. We won’t involve Ignus or Ventus, who would have control of that elder. You can fight them and show that you have strength worthy of your standing and require respect."
As much as Remey knew that there would always be the elder dragons or really anyone of any race that looked down on them or others, it was hard to accept.
This elder dragon most likely did not believe the words that they had heard about everyone in the hero party that helped build Genesis. They most likely believed that it was the royal dragons who made the greatest achievements. Especially if they were an elder dragon from further away suddenly called to watch over a small village and change territories as a whole.
There had been a few dragons that had issues like this at the start of the changes within Genesis territory and the larger territories made to mimic elemental areas just as the elemental planes were. Therefore, it was known but a problem that would be solved over a longer period of time.
It was the same as the races learning one another’s cultures. It was just happening faster for some races compared to others.
"Let’s go and handle this then, I have plans but this is more important." The plans that Remey had were related to herb prices and some meetings with older alchemists about how they would sell potions to merchants for longer travel times. It was all things that didn’t need her but some people insisted that she was present for. But they would hold a meeting like that off until she could be there, while Onyx needed her support for himself and for those under his protection.
Plus, it wasn’t every day that Onyx came to her wanting to fight someone. The territory they could reach easily with the elemental teleportation formations. While restricted still, it would eventually be used for goods and services. Right this second it had the primary usage for moving guards, important merchants bringing materials for building, and the people in need of new jobs or finding new jobs elsewhere.
There were some other reasons but the general populace was still following the roads being built. In the future the teleportations formations might be improved but that was thought for another time. Right now, Remey and Onyx were walking outside of Onyx’s territory and in to the actual wilderness.
The signs of some nearby trees recently being cut down and even some broken stones proved that someone had been giving orders for materials to be gathered. Yet, it was not in the sustainable and proper way that the elder dragons closer to Genesis were ordering their dragonkin followers to do.
This had been a major reason for the conflicts at first. Some elders did not like that they were being told how to run the territory given to them by the royal dragons. However, that was handled by the royal dragons for the most part. It was also handled by their dragon champions and draconic guardians. Both who ranked higher than the elder dragons as a whole in their culture.
"It seemed that this elder dragon is not properly following the gathering and replenishment-"
"You are correct. It is another piece of issue we have with one another. When I brought it to their attention they were angry and told me never to set a scale in their territory. If they attack I will break their wings so that they must stay on the ground and heal while looking at the harm they are doing to their lands." Onyx stopped for a brief moment, "and their people who they should prepare for the future."
As if called, the wind picked up around them carrying an odd heat. One that was not altogether natural. Remey nearly reacted by increasing the flames around herself and making it clear that she would fight, but she stopped herself and waited for Onyx.
He was already showing his full size and the younger serpents hiding within his shadows darted out to make room and witness what was to happen.
"I gave you an order, you are not to move through my territory. You are violating my word. You spit in the faces of every dragon. You and your small species of monster will not survive the next decade because you do not understand what it means to be prey."
The words of the green and red scaled dragon were vicious and filled with mockery. Yet, they were also clearly directed at Onyx without notice of Remey.
"Be silent in my presence. I am Remey, title holder of many and here to witness this battle of hierarchy amongst dragons and patriarch of their race. I am going to witness this as one who stands equal to a royal and also one who wishes to see justice and equality upheld. Your punishment will come whether you win or lose today, be warned." The flames that flared around Remey set the precedent.
Punishment was inevitable now that the elder had also ignored her and focused on just one Onyx. But it was greater than that. Remey stood beside Ognus, a royal fire dragon. Someone that deserved respect. If Remey was not given that respect, it was very much against dragon culture as well.
Besides, Remey was not unhappy to make sure Onyx could start with a slight upper hand in this fight, whether it was just words or not.
