Chapter 800

As Anton expected, battling supreme rank beings wouldn’t be simple. After an hour of battling with the three liches, his teammates still hadn’t managed to kill the lich that they were focus-firing on. The defense of the liches was simply formidable. Still, Anton didn’t waver in his concentration because his job was keeping the other two liches busy.

Soon, though, Anton couldn’t take the attention of two powerful liches anymore, so he commanded two of his summons, the Shadow Master and the Shadow Warrior, to assist him, and the two summons grabbed the attention of the third lich.

Finally, after an hour and fifteen minutes, his teammates finally killed one of the liches. Unfortunately, the third lich managed to cast a spell that went through the Cloak of Shadow. Anton and his teammates knew that the lich's companions would arrive soon.

After a few minutes, the supreme rank wraiths and the supreme rank vampires who were guarding the half-formed gate arrived. Thankfully, Anton and his teammates battled with the remaining two liches, who were still under Anton, the Shadow Master, and the Shadow Warrior’s Cloak of Shadow Spell, caused confusion to the newly arrived elite undead creatures.

Anton knew that the main reason why the undead beings were confused was that the darkness, which was normally something the undead favored, was working against them. It was kind of amusing that the undead were the ones who cast light spells to check the area under the Cloak of Shadow. Thankfully, light spells were not effective against Anton’s Assassin skill.

What impressed Anton most about the liches was their ability to keep fighting blind. It actually took him and his teammates a while to destroy one of the liches, even though their enemies were working without sight. Still, Anton’s teammates managed to destroy the second lich.

Captain Joraniah noticed that the vampires and the wraiths seemed to become aware that they had managed to destroy two of three liches. After a few seconds more of hesitation, the wraiths and the vampires plunged inside the Cloak of Shadow and joined the fight.

Anton’s team advantage was mitigated by the vampires’ ability to smell prey. They were able to fight against Anton’s team as if they were able to see because of their sense of smell.

Since all of the Supreme Rank undead had arrived, Helena and Sudarta abandoned the Silence and Fog of Confusion ritual spell they were doing and joined in the fight. The fight had become eight of them against six of the undead elites.

Anton summoned all of his summons to assist them. They were still under the Cloak of Shadow since it was still effective against the remaining lich and the wraiths.

The fight lasted for a long time. The sun had started to rise when Anton’s team finally killed most of the Supreme Rank undead. The only remaining enemies were the two powerful vampires.

Unfortunately, since the two remaining vampires were aware that they would lose, they sacrificed themselves by doing some sort of spell that let their bodies explode. Even with all their defenses, including the buffs from all the supreme rank wizards like Anton’s Paladin Auras, the two vampires managed to annihilate Tamor and gravely wound Mishos.

They couldn’t do anything about Tamor since he exploded into particles along with the vampires, but Mishos was fine after a few seconds. All of them had potent healing skills and managed to heal Mishos to full health in seconds. Unfortunately, they couldn’t do anything to help Tamor.

After all the supreme rank undead were destroyed, the team had to complete the mission. They destroyed the remaining undead in the fallen town, destroyed the half-built gate, and buried the space destabilizing item deep underground to prevent any more gates from being established in the area. When they were all done, they hastily left the area and headed home to Nermador.

There were eight of them that arrived in that fallen town, and now just seven of them were left. Anton was shocked. He did not expect to lose anyone during his first mission, considering that all of them were Supreme Rank wizards.

The others looked sad, but they were all giving off the vibe that they were used to it. When the captain saw his expression, while they were flying home, the captain flew near him.

“I’m sorry you had to experience that in your first mission, but I want to be honest with you. Doing our task, one in ten missions, we would lose someone. That’s the average for all the teams. That was why all captains gathered whenever a new, powerful wizard arrived. All of us need to fill our team. Since you just joined our team, it will be a while before it’s our turn again.”

“What about Tamor? Are we going to inform his family?”

“Of course. We will even hold a memorial briefly. Tamor’s remaining family is aware that there’s a huge chance that he wouldn’t return from Nermador. As a matter of fact, all of our families are aware. The fatality rate of wizards here is extremely high, but we still need to fight. We have no choice. I’m sure you’ve prepared your family as well.”

Anton was startled, but kept his mouth shut. As a matter of fact, his father and his sister weren’t aware of anything at all. He was sure that they were aware that he joined the fight against the coalition in the kingdom of Amendora, but they did not know the details. He was sure that his father and his sister were confident that he would survive since his abilities were truly powerful.

He knew that he should inform Anders and Anna so they would be prepared, but he was a little afraid of what they would do if they learned the details of the circumstances of the wizards in Nermador, wherein even the most powerful could die in a given mission.

Anton knew that more than likely, deep down, his sister and his father were aware. The three of them had been victims of the coalition for a long time and knew how powerful the Undead Coalition was. Anders even joined in the fight against the undead in New Drennor.

Their way home to Nermador would take longer since they had to return using a roundabout route. Their flight from Nermador to that fallen town only took them a few hours, but their return home would take them a whole day. Even under the Cloak of Shadows, they had to avoid the undead army besieging the Nermador’s Western Walls.

Anton was a little shocked about the team losing Tamor. He just met the man, but he felt close to his teammates already. The main reason for that was his team’s willingness to fight it out with the coalition, since just like him, they believed that the coalition needed to be destroyed.

Thankfully, they managed to return to Nermador without any issue. Captain Joraniah told everyone that for the next two days, everyone could rest. He informed Anton that Sudarta would provide him with high-level crafting materials, so he had to start his magic item experimentation. The captain asked Anton to prioritize crafting items that would contain the Cloak of Shadow spell and some of the defensive auras that he had.

After that, the captain left to report the details of their mission to the higher-ups. Once they were at their base, Anton saw his teammates going to their rooms. He knew that they were going to grieve privately. He learned that Tamor had been a part of the team ever since it was formed, so all of them were close to him.
