Chapter 62: Narrow Encounters Between Foes

Eventually, the people from the fourth household came over. Xu Po felt rather embarrassed and directly brought over the wild vegetables and mushrooms Xu Jiaojiao had picked, along with a few potatoes.

Madam Chen saw what the fourth brought and nodded in satisfaction; the fourth was a bit smarter than that stubborn second.

"These wild chickens won’t keep well for long. How about I take care of them tonight?" Xu Minghui looked at the two wild chickens and asked.

"Are they still trying to charge you for this?" Xu Mumu raised an eyebrow slightly. Her brother seemed to have some connections, making her a bit curious. If he really had connections, it might be possible to hunt some wild game from the mountains, which would speed up their savings.

"Of course." Xu Minghui said with a smile. The kitchen already smelled delicious, and Xu Minghui couldn’t help but swallow. It’s not often they get to eat wild game.

"I want to go too, brother. Let’s go together." Xu Mumu looked at Xu Minghui, knowing that he probably wanted to go to the county to handle the chickens and turn them into money for peace of mind.

"What are you going for? It’s pitch black outside. What if something dangerous happens? Let your brother and father go." Old Xu took a drag of his tobacco and said.

"Grandpa, I’m quite capable, let me go and see, okay?" Xu Mumu pleaded cutely.

"I want to go too." Little Xu Minglei chimed in.

"Stay put, both of you, and behave at home. No running around." Old Xu gave Xu Minglei a sidelong glance.

He was aware of Xu Mumu’s strength, but since she was a young lady, he still felt uneasy about letting her go.

The dinner was prepared by Sun Huiping and Madam Chen together, while Li Caixia was responsible for keeping the fire going. With such good ingredients, they didn’t want Li Caixia to ruin them. No matter what Li Caixia cooked, it was just barely edible.

As the dishes were served, Li Caixia quickly snatched a chicken leg and put it into Xu Mumu’s bowl.

"Mom, you should eat too. You don’t have to serve me." Xu Mumu said helplessly but felt a warmth in her heart. Every time, Li Caixia would give her the best part.

"Alright, alright, eat quickly before it’s all gone." Li Caixia quickly joined in eating. It had been a while since they last had meat. One chicken was fully cooked by Madam Chen, and the other leg was snatched up by Xu Minghui.

Seeing the best parts in the bowls of her family members, Li Caixia felt a bit more satisfied.

After dinner, Old Xu couldn’t resist Xu Mumu’s pleading, so he asked Xu Minghui to watch over her carefully and let them go.

It was a bit dark, but the road to the county was a stone-paved one, not a small path, so it was relatively easy to walk on.

Xu Mumu followed Xu Minghui, weaving between the houses in the county. At night, the county was quite quiet, with only the occasional barking of a dog to be heard.

"Here we are, it’s this place. Don’t say anything, I’ll handle it." Xu Minghui said seriously once they reached a seemingly ordinary courtyard gate, reminding Xu Mumu.

"Mm." Xu Mumu nodded, quietly standing behind Xu Minghui.

Xu Minghui went over and knocked on the gate. An impatient voice came from inside the courtyard, "Who is it? It’s late, don’t you let people sleep?"

"Sir Qi, it’s me. I have something to discuss with you." Xu Minghui replied in a low voice.

Xu Mumu stood beside Xu Minghui, leaning against a nearby tree. Her sharp hearing detected at least four to five people inside. The place looked no different from other places, leaving her curious about how her brother found it?

Perhaps someone inside recognized Xu Minghui’s voice, for the courtyard gate opened slightly, revealing a somewhat chubby face.

"Oh, it’s Brother Minghui. What brings you to the county this late?" The chubby man relaxed upon seeing Xu Minghui.

"Brother Minghui, who’s this?" The man cautiously looked at Xu Mumu, not letting them in right away.

"She’s my sister, Mumu. Mumu, this is Sun." Xu Minghui said, unfazed by Fatty Sun’s wariness. In their line of work, having no sense of caution would get you nowhere.

"What brings you here?" Fatty Sun asked, still not opening the gate.

"We caught this at home, wondering if Sir Qi would be interested." Xu Minghui lifted the cover on the basket a bit, with a hint of flattery on his face.

Fatty Sun, holding a flashlight, took a look.

"Wait here, I’ll go get Sir Qi." Fatty Sun’s eyes lit up. While they could easily gather vegetables and grains, meat was hard to come by.

Previously, Xu Minghui would occasionally bring some wild game over.

Soon, the courtyard gate was fully opened. Xu Mumu watched as a lanky teenager came out, wearing a deeper smile on her face. Such fate!

"It’s you! What are you doing here?" Qi Feng was instantly reminded of the pain from previously healed injuries upon seeing Xu Mumu. It was this little girl who had ruined things for him before.

"Oh dear, brother, is this your friend? I think I might have offended him before." Xu Mumu said with a cheeky smile.

Seeing Xu Mumu, Qi Feng became fully alert, even more exaggeratedly grabbing an iron rod from the wall, holding it tightly for a sense of security.

"Sir Qi, my sister was young and reckless before. I apologize." Xu Minghui saw Qi Feng armed and his henchmen picking up handy weapons too.

"So, she’s your sister, Xu Minghui. I’m telling you, this matter isn’t over." Qi Feng was genuinely scared. He didn’t know where this woman got her strength before, kicking his older brother into the wall, leading to a fracture. His brother was still bedridden.

Seeing Xu Mumu now, Qi Feng instinctively recoiled, fearing she might kick him too. His build couldn’t take it.

"Do you think these people can handle me? We’re here to sell, not to fight. Are you buying or not?" Xu Mumu asked with a smile, not intending to act, unless they really didn’t know better.

"Sir Qi, what do you think?" Xu Minghui asked, somewhat in a bind and seeking Qi Feng’s favor. If he’d known about their grudge earlier, he wouldn’t have brought his sister here.

Observing Qi Feng’s demeanor, it seemed future transactions might be difficult. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Though he didn’t plan on returning with the goods. Naturally, he wanted to handle them before going back.

"Sir Qi, we’re in need of meat, right? How about we take it?" A henchman hesitantly suggested to Qi Feng. He had witnessed Xu Mumu’s ferocity in a prior altercation and was thus wary of her.
