Chapter 161: 161-Power Hungry

Iris:

Luca stood up from the couch and stepped toward us. ๐˜ง๐“‡๐‘’๐‘’๐‘คโ„ฏ๐‘๐“ƒ๐˜ฐ๐‘ฃโ„ฏ๐˜ญ.๐˜คโ„ด๐˜ฎ

"Let her take a breath first," Luca told my mother, who rolled her eyes at him.

"Where is it?" she demanded again.

"Itโ€™s in the closet," I replied.

She rushed past me while I looked at Luca, sadness filling my eyes.

"Itโ€™s okay," he said, giving me a reassuring look.

"No, itโ€™s not," I replied. "Mom is going to give my brother the cure now. Then weโ€™ll have to wait at least a day to see if itโ€™s working, or if one dose is even enough."

I reminded Luca that even though my mother kept saying the cure would work, we did not truly know. Until it was confirmed, we could not leave.

My mother wanted to leave the moment we got the cure, but Kash made sure that would not happen. He had given it just one day before his wedding. We could not run away unless we were certain the cure worked. If it didnโ€™t, I knew my mother would stay and force me to get another one.

For the rest of the day, I sat by the window, watching people arrive as they prepared the royal garden for the wedding.

I began to remember my own wedding day. It was beautiful. Kash had planned everything perfectly, from my bridal dress to my hairstyle. He did not let anyone influence me. I remembered how his mother wanted to choose a crown for me, but he respectfully told her it was my decision alone.

I carried a heavy heart. I did not understand why Kash was marrying Lara. He told me repeatedly it was for the Blue River water. But before Colin, the Blue River water had always been about power. So what has changed? Was power truly that important to him, enough to choose it over me?

"Donโ€™t tire yourself. He has moved on," my mother said from behind me.

I lifted my head and gave a polite, forced smile to the guests arriving. Of course, family members would be staying in the guest rooms. We had occupied the first floor, and the remaining rooms would be filled by the guests.

"Lara is arriving in two hours too," I heard my mother add.

I did not respond. I acted as if I were watching my children in the garden. They were playing with Walkin while workers checked the arrangements.

"Oh, come on, Iris. Get over it. He has moved on. You should too," my mother snapped when she noticed I was ignoring her.

"Does it ever occur to you, Mother, that just because you tell someone to move on, they do not simply move on?" I asked without turning toward her. "You have been told many times to move on from my brother. Did you?"

At that moment, I wondered what it would take for her to feel my pain. Should I open my heart to her? Even though I knew she was cruel, part of me wanted to understand why. Why would a mother ruin her daughterโ€™s life so badly?

"You should not compare Wilson to Kash," my mother replied. "Wilson had a sickness. Kash is a cheater. He is hungry for power. He was born this way."

Her words made me turn from the window to look at her.

"As if you do not know," she continued. "He was born to rule. He thinks with his head, unlike you. The heart is only meant to beat in your chest, and he understands that. That is why, after the wedding tomorrow, he will be the greatest ruler in the history of werewolves, ruling over three territories."

She folded her arms across her chest, her fingers pressing into her skin.

"And what do you think comes next?" my mother asked. "The east. Mark my words. He will find a way to start a war with the east, even if they do not want one, even if they do not threaten him."

Her words made my body tense. The east was not just the east. It held secrets, secrets that would be exposed if Kash truly attacked it.

I let out a slow breath and looked away from her.

"I thought you were in a hurry to leave and give Wilson the medicine," I said, raising an eyebrow. "Are you not in a rush anymore?"

I wondered if she was staying just for the wedding.

"I think I will stay for the wedding. You will stay for the wedding," my mother snickered as she turned and started to walk away.

"But you didnโ€™t buy anything for the evening," I asked, confused.

She turned back and gave me a cheeky smile.

"Thatโ€™s because I already have a dress for it. I prepared for this a long time ago. The day we arrived and I heard Lara was marrying him, I started preparing," she said, a disturbing grin spreading across her lips before she walked away.

"I donโ€™t have to go back with you now. You got the cure, I should get my freedom," I said.

She turned again. I expected her smile to fade, but it didnโ€™t.

"Iโ€™ll leave soon after the wedding. You are going home with me, or the videos will be everywhere."

This time, her smile vanished, and so did the air in my chest.

"Mother," I said, stepping toward her, already feeling my emotions rise as she did this to me again.

She raised her palm, stopping me.

"The moment he gets married here, we will leave. Then you will marry Luca in the Lycan community. Those are my orders. Only after that will your brother wake up and get the cure. Otherwise, your son is gone for good."

There was a sharp urgency in her voice, as if she were running out of time. My eyes widened in shock.

The threat felt like it stole the air from my lungs. Panic began to set in.

On one side, there was a girl getting married to the man she loved, with her father helping her make it happen. On the other side, there was me, being threatened by my own mother.

How could two women, almost the same age, live such different lives and meet such different fates?

As tears burned in my eyes, I realized I needed to involve Kash now.
