Chapter 57: Sunshine meets Carson.

Nimo seemed to have forgotten the rules of the apocalypse which Sunshine had taught her. The rule about not dating fools was a personal one, but the one about not trusting super humans, that was a general one.

As with anything, there was good and bad, so there were some good super humans. Most were neutral and Sunshine had been in the neutral zone.

But, before deciding if a super human could be trusted or not, one needed to be very careful. If she had known Carson Warnock in the apocalypse, that would make it easy to decide but she never heard of him.

"He is here!" Sunshine dragged Nimo with her to the elevator. This is not a conversation that they could have out in public. "Shh." She asked Nimo to keep quiet.

Nodding Nimo followed Sunshine to the topmost floor, the penthouse suit that had turned into Sunshine and Hades’s home. The children also lived with them up there. Access was only granted to occupants.

As soon as the doors closed, Nimo turned to her and expanded on the matter, "We could not just leave him out there. Carson is one of the good guys, or so I have heard from a friend of a friend. All friends that are in the military by the way, to be specific.

Major Elio knows a secret service agent named Willy Sykes that mentioned over drinks that his buddy Carson, the only survivor of the mist needed a place to keep his head low. The major mentioned me and you and this base.

Willy sent Carson your name and the name of the mountain. Carson was on his way when he was attacked. We found him on the dirt road off the highway, cornered by secretary Ceaser’s men and we fought them off rescuing him and his sister.

Before you ask if we took safety precautions, all the attackers are dead and we stripped them of clothes, wallets and phones. The bodies were dropped on the highway for cars to run over. The city is on fire so even if they are found, they will be lumped in with all the other dead victims of looters."

Sunshine run her fingers along the back of a sofa, letting out a loud sigh. "Ceasar is chasing him which means sooner or later, he will be could be traced here. While confrontations between tense bases was common in the apocalypse, I was hoping to keep Fortress Four out of all the useless struggles. Need I remind you about my super humans warning Nimo? Being too helpful is how you ended up dead."

"Last time, I promise. I just thought that it would be better if we had him instead of Ceasar. Only God knows what that lunatic wants to do. But the choice on what happens next is yours. Even if you kill him to keep the base a secret, I will not judge because this is your place and we live by your rules." Nimo spread her hands leaving the final call to her friend.

Sunshine’s eyes locked with Nimo’s. "First I need to speak to him." She spoke as she walked to the dining room table. An open laptop was sitting there and she accessed the information database, searching for Carson Warnock.

Name: Carson Warnock

After looking at general information, she moved to the health section and checked what his thermal band had to say.

The thermal band could not declare him dangerous or safe but it confirmed that he was abnormal. She had set them to ordinary human standards for this specific purpose. If anyone awakened, she would know.

"Let’s go and see him." She told Nimo.

"Where is your husband?" Nimo asked her as they entered the elevator. "I want to meet the great Hades Quinn."

"Great!" Sunshine said curiously.

"Yes, great Sunshine, your husband is great." Nimo doubled down as the elevator moved. "Even you must admit that his rags to riches story is very inspirational. Lets not forget the fact that he has been featured in a couple of magazines as the hottest business man of the year. With a jaw and eyes of steel." She finished off in a teasing voice that was very childish.

Sunshine rolled her eyes. "Eyes of steel!"

Nimo laughed.

They reached down and got into a car, driving straight to the housing section in the second wall and stopped outside of a house marked 12. Cars were not allowed to park in the living sector for long periods of time. Naturally, a parked car drew the curiosity of the new residents.

As they stepped out of the car with umbrellas in their hands, Sunshine noticed the rustle of a curtain in the living room window. It signaled to her and Nimo that they were being observed from the inside.

"We are being watched." She spoke gently.

"He is a former soldier; surveillance of all new territories is in our blood. And, until he gets an all clear to stay permanently, he will continue to be on edge." Said Nimo.

"So am I. He is the first superhuman, we are witnessing history in the making Nimo. I hope I don’t have to kill him." Sunshine’s gaze moved to the opening door.

Carson’s head popped out. "Sergent Nimo," He said tensely, peeking at Sunshine through the sides of his eyes.

Nimo nodded once, to acknowledge him and then she touched Sunshine’s arm. "This is the boss, commanding officer and president of the base."

Carson turned his eyes to Sunshine. So this was the one in whose hands his fate lay. He saluted her, "Carson Warnock ma’am. It is a pleasure to meet you."

"At ease soldier." She replied.

He lowered his hand.

"I will be entering your house now, unless you would prefer that I don’t." She told him.

With a calm motion, Carson exposed his empty palms, indicating transparency. "I have nothing to hide ma’am and this is your base so every house is your house."

They entered the house, Sunshine first and Nimo followed. Carson was the last to make his way in. The house looked just like every other two bedroom house on the base.

A woman was standing in the living room.

Carson passed them and stood by his sister. "This is Sister Ana belle Warnock, my sister. Even if you don’t take me in, I hope that she gets to stay. She is not just a nun but she is also a qualified teacher. I am sure that there will be use for her here."

Sunshine sat down in the sofa and looked at Carson. "How did you survive the mist?"

"I don’t know, I just did. And I will be truthful because I don’t want to put you in trouble with Secretary Ceasar. Since I escaped the mist, I have an ability to heal myself." Carson responded without hesitating.

Anna pointed an index finger at her chest. "And others, he can heal others too."
