Chapter 284: Suspect

A few days later, inside Vice Dean Hannah’s office.

Hannah sat behind her desk with a serious expression on her face, standing in front of her were the two old men who were usually in charge of guarding the entrance of the university’s vault.

The atmosphere inside the office was heavy as the three of them stared in silence. The two men had their heads lowered slightly and from their expressions, one could easily tell that there was trouble.

"What about the observation formation inside the chambers?" Hannah asked softly after some time.

"It seemed to have been compromised, the last memory stored inside was of student Alex entering the corridor, there was nothing else." One of the men reported in a deep tone.

"Someone tempered with the observation formation and magic beasts appeared inside the university on the same day, coincidentally, it all happened at the moment that Alex went to claim his rewards." Hannah mumbled.

The office fell into silence again after Hannah’s words, the two men didn’t need her to say anything else, everything felt too clear to be a coincidence.

Something had been stolen on the day that Alex went to the vault to claim his rewards and it just so happened that the two of them had left to attend to some matters at that time, so they were unable to check Alex after he came out.

It was all just too convenient.

"But I honestly don’t think it was student Alex’s doing. It might be someone else trying to make it seem like he was responsible." One of the men said.

"I agree with that, a student has no business stealing the Void key. I doubt that he even knows what it is." The other man added.

"Silence!" Hannah spat in a low but powerful tone as mana gushed out of her body and pressured the two men in front of her.

Their expressions instantly changed as breathing became strenuous and it felt like a powerful force was about to crush them into the ground.

Hannah stared at them with sharp eyes for some time before letting out a sigh and withdrawing her mana, after which she said.

"Summon the student,"

The two men bowed slightly and exited the office.

After they left, Hannah rested her old back on her chair as she had been sitting forward since now, she stared at the ceiling while thinking about the words of those two men.

Indeed, very few people knew the existence of the Void key and what it could be used for, a first year student like Alex shouldn’t have any reason to take it.

More importantly, a Core rank mage shouldn’t be able to touch the Void key in the first place!

’But what if he’s part of that group? Could they be on the move again?’ Hannah thought, a glint of worry and hatred flashing past her aged eyes as if recalling something unpleasant.

...

Meanwhile, Alex was currently inside instructor Henry’s class. They were learning advanced methods of formation invasion and Henry was currently demonstrating in front of the class.

With each movement of his fingers, instructor Henry used mana to draw symbols in the air for everyone in the class to see.

"Remember, it’s important that when you find yourself trapped or lost in another person’s formation. Trying to break out with brute force or destroying the core of the formation isn’t always the best option.

Of course those options might always work but it could end up with you getting injured if the formation has defensive countermeasures. Additionally, it’s truly a waste to use such methods on a high grade formation.

Especially if it’s a movable formation." Instructor Henry voiced out as his fingers demonstrated how to place complex runes on an already existing formation that he had created in front of the class.

"Instead of using those options, you can take control of the formation and use it to your advantage!" He said.

From where Alex was sitting, his eyes flashed with an excited glint as he listened and memorized everything that instructor Henry was doing and saying.

Basic formation knowledge class had always been Alex’s favourite class inside the Magic University, he just loved learning about formations and the existence of runes fascinated him.

At this moment, the door of the classroom was pushed open and two figures entered uninvited.

Instructor Henry immediately stopped talking and turned to look at them, the students also turned to see who was bold enough to interrupt the class.

Instructor Henry’s eyes flashed in surprise after seeing the two men, Alex was equally stunned to see them.

He thought that these two never left the front of the vault.

’But why are they here though? It can’t be that they want to take back the grade five magic items that I took, right?’ Alex thought, thinking that the Magic University might be concerned about the numbers of grade five items left and wanted to force him to take something of a lower rank.

"Seniors, can I help you with something?" Instructor Henry said with a friendly smile, he was very polite to these two men despite his status as an instructor.

The two old men didn’t reply as they scanned the faces of the students with their eyes. Alex was already having a bad feeling about this and his guess was confirmed when their eyes locked on him at almost the same time.

They were here for him!

"Student Alex, come with us for a moment." One of them said expressionlessly.

The usual friendly tone that they had after meeting Alex a few times had completely vanished. Alex noticed this but didn’t think much about it, thinking it was because of the others.

Without saying a word, he stood up and walked towards the two.

"We’ll be borrowing this student for a bit, so you can continue with your class." The second old man turned and said to the confused instructor Henry.

The three of them left without waiting for Henry’s response.

"Aren’t those the two seniors guarding the university’s treasure vault? I thought they never left their posts?"

"I thought the same, I heard from my elder brother who’s a senior student that those two are related to the Dean of the university which is why they’re personally guarding the magic items in the vault."

"But why would they be looking for Alex, is he in trouble?"

"Who knows? He has gotten first place twice in a row and entered the vault, maybe he took something that he shouldn’t have."

"Serves him right!"

"Bah, you’re just envious and miserable because you can’t come first place; you didn’t even make the top 100."

After Alex left with the two old men, the students began whispering to each other.

"That’s enough, stop talking and listen!" Instructor Henry voiced out as he resumed teaching.

Meanwhile, on their way to Vice Dean Hannah’s office.

"Excuse me, am I being invited because I took another two grade five magic items? I wasn’t told that there was a limit on how many I could take." Alex said.

The two men stared at him with questioning eyes.

"You really don’t know or you’re faking ignorance?" One of them asked.

"Know what?" Alex asked back, his face adapting a confused expression.

The two men stared at each other before facing forward.

"You’ll find out when we get there," one of them said as they kept walking.

Alex stared at them in silence as he walked alongside them, he was thinking if he had done something that he wasn’t aware of.

Soon, they arrived at Vice Dean Hannah’s office.

"Come in," an aged voice came from inside immediately they got there.

"We have brought the student," one of them said as they entered the office.

Alex entered along with them and saw the Vice Dean staring at them with a serious expression.

He returned the stare with his still confused expression. Since this wasn’t his first time seeing her, he didn’t think much of it.

But Vice Dean Hannah misinterpreted his stare.

"Show us the items you took from the vault recently," Vice Dean Hannah said immediately after the door of the office was closed shut.

Alex didn’t hesitate and waved his hands, two items appeared from inside his storage ring.

One of them was a cloak and the other was a small round ball.

"Are these everything?" Vice Dean Hannah asked with narrowed eyes, her tone obviously telling Alex not to dare lie.

The two old men stared from behind, watching Alex’s every movement.

Alex’s eyes narrowed as well when he heard the question.

"Yes, these are all I took. After all, I only had two vault tokens." Alex stated confidently.

The office fell into silence once more as Alex and the old vice dean entered a staring contest. After some time, Vice Dean Hannah waved her left hand and an image appeared above her palm.

"Do you know what this is?" She asked.

Alex stared at the image that had formed, his expression didn’t change even after recognising the item in the image.

"I’ve seen it inside the vault before but I don’t know what it is, it definitely isn’t a magic item so I didn’t bother with it." Alex said.

He wasn’t lying when he said he didn’t know what that item was, since he didn’t use the all knowing mask to check it.

"This is a Void key, and it went missing the same day you took these two items." Vice Dean Hannah said slowly.

Alex "..."
