Chapter 290: Facing the steel-horned snake

They had caused quite a lot of commotion while dealing with the magic beasts and the noise had spread to literally every part of the ironwood forest, attracting the attention of all the magic beasts inside it.

Alex had long sensed the presence of the beasts approaching them right after the fight started but didn’t tell Eric. Their main reason for coming here, the steel-horned snake, had also sensed the disturbance and started to move towards them.

As one of the few mutated rank beasts in the ironwood forest, the presence of the steel-horned snake had scared away all of the common rank beasts that originally wanted to see what was going on.

As for the remaining few magic beasts that were of the same rank, they were more intelligent and knew that fighting the steel-horned snake wasn’t a favourable battle, so they had retreated voluntarily. Leaving the snake as the only creature to come toward Alex’s and Eric’s position.

The snake had actually arrived some time ago and had been watching from the darkness as it saw the two humans take care of the weaker magic beasts.

Its hunting instinct caused it to stay in hiding and wait for the humans to finish fighting, it would strike once they let their guards down.

The snake finally found the right opportunity after sensing that Eric was completely defenceless and lunged at him with full speed, ready to end him in one bite.

Unfortunately, Alex had long been keeping a close eye on the other party and immediately made his move when he noticed that the beast was about to attack.

He had jumped out and placed a space wall in front of Eric just in time to welcome the steel horn of the snake.

As for why Alex had reacted like that instead of killing the snake directly, it was obviously to play according to his role as a Core rank mage and help Eric kill this beast.

Eric came back to his senses after Alex’s shout and without saying a word, his eyes turned pitch black and stars of the shadow element formed around him.

Two black star patterns quickly formed and created the two daggers that he had released barely minutes ago.

"Ready?" Eric asked with his eyes fixed on the snake that rose several meters high in the air, his expression had turned serious which was something that Alex rarely saw.

"Hmm, I’ll block its attacks, focus on killing it," Alex said with a nod, calmly stating their roles.

A slight smile broke through Eric’s serious expression and without wasting time, he dashed toward the snake. Alex wasn’t just going to stand there and follow closely behind Eric, his eyes already glowing with the silver-white light of the space element.

Seeing the two humans rush toward it, the snake sharply retreated into the darkness of the forest. Its black scales helped it to blend perfectly with the environment and one could easily lose sight of it.

Unfortunately for it, Eric was a shadow mage and could sense it now that he knew it was around. As for Alex...he was just too strong to be tricked by a mutated rank beast.

Bam!

Eric launched himself into the air with force, causing the ground to crack as he spiralled toward a nearby tree that wasn’t too far from the position of the snake.

At the same time, the sound of the wind being torn through sounded as a massive black shadow suddenly appeared from nowhere and headed for the tree that Eric was going to land within the next second.

It was the snake’s tail! The creature was so gigantic that even its tail was several times bigger than Eric.

Seeing this, Eric didn’t panic and didn’t try changing directions. The reason for his confidence appeared right before his feet landed on the tree.

"Space wall!"

Alex’s voice sounded from behind Eric just before he touched the tree, the tail of the snake arrived at the same time.

Bang!

A loud sound rang out as the tail of the snake crashed into an invisible wall that had suddenly appeared beside Eric, completely preventing it from making contact with the boy.

Eric’s movements didn’t slow down at all. His feet touched the tree at the same time that the tail and space wall met and he instantly shot himself toward the head of the snake like an arrow released from a bowstring.

Alex kept following closely behind.

The brown eyes of the snake flashed in the darkness. Upon seeing this, it opened its large mouth and hissed at Eric, who was approaching it swiftly.

Alex’s eyes narrowed as he recalled that the red-eyed bear he had fought back then was capable of sending out energy attacks, he guessed that this snake should be able to do the same thing.

And just as he had thought, the steel horn on the head of the snake suddenly let out a subtle glow that could easily be ignored.

The next moment, a red beam shot out toward Eric at a fast speed.

Eric was shocked, completely caught off guard by this attack and for a moment, didn’t know how to react. He was already flying through the air so he couldn’t change directions.

And the beam was too fast for him to cast a spell to escape.

Left without a choice, Eric was about to bring his daggers forward to defend when he heard Alex’s voice from behind him.

"Space wall!"

Eric’s face lit up, Alex’s voice sounded like the voice of an angel at this moment; although the next sound interrupted the moment.

BOOM!

The beam crashed into the invisible wall and erupted, sending out shockwaves.

The shockwave slowed Eric down slightly and he used the opportunity to step on the space wall before using it to accelerate his launch toward the snake.

He arrived above the beast almost immediately after that last launch and slashed down with both daggers.

BAM!!!

The sound of Eric’s daggers landing on the tough scale of the creature sounded, and the impact pushed the body of the snake toward the ground, although it didn’t manage to send it crashing into the earth.

Eric landed on the ground beside the snake and immediately used shadow blend to retreat to Alex’s position. The hit had caused the snake to be disoriented for a few seconds, but Eric didn’t go in for a second attack right away.

"I knew my shadow blades wouldn’t be able to cut through those tough scales, I should have used this right from the start." Eric let out an embarrassed chuckle as he rose from the shadow beside Alex.

His shadow daggers disappeared, and two short daggers with curved blades appeared in his hands. These daggers had faintly glowing runes on their blades.

They were both magic items, grade three magic items at that!

Alex "..."

He didn’t see anything and slowly raised his left hand towards the back of Eric’s head.

Pah!

Alex suddenly smacked Eric, shocking the boy.

Eric held his head and stared at Alex with a wronged expression.

"What was that for?!" He cried out.

"Why didn’t you use that from the start if you already knew that your daggers wouldn’t hurt the damned snake?!" Alex asked sternly.

"Umm, I just wanted to test how powerful my daggers are against a mutated rank beast with hard scales," Eric explained with a sheepish and apologetic smile.
