Chapter 39: A Momentarily Opening

Chapter 39

Facing the relentless assault from the revolting creature in front of him, Alex forced himself to calm down. He knew panicking wouldn’t save him. If anything, it would only make things worse.

He locked his eyes onto the monster’s body as he kept on dodging the creature’s strikes. The thing was really a tough bastard. His last hit had barely done anything to the bastard except make it more furious.

"There has to be something. There’s no way this thing is invincible, after all as mischievous as the system is, she won’t just send me on my first fight against a powerful thing." He muttered under his breath while narrowly slipping past another swipe.

After several near death exchanges with the powerful fiend, Alex managed to notice something crucial. That was, whenever the creature attacked him, a layer of conspicuous black flesh on its grey chest seemed to open for a fraction of a second... Then sealed back shut again.

Knowing the weak spot was one thing, hitting it was another. The opening was ridiculously short. Plus whenever he was about to strike at it, the monster would suddenly leap backward as if knowing that this pesky human was about to strike something important.

In short, his chances of surviving this encounter felt slim. But if anything, Alex absolutely had no intention of dying here. Not when he hadn’t completed his revenge on those who had wronged him.

Forcing out a deep breath, Alex’s gaze toward the monster suddenly sharpened. If he couldn’t hit the weak spot directly, then he would just have to create an opening for himself. One that would leave the harrowing foe’s defense wide open.

Alex locked his eyes toward the two hollow, glowing pits staring back at him and muttered under his breath as he shifted his stance.

"Alright, you ugly bastard. Let’s see whether you can still avoid me, while blind."

With a mad dash, Alex lunged toward the monster aiming for its chest, but the monster blocked almost instinctively, leaving it’s eyes wide open. With a brutal two handed thrust, Alex drove his hands straight toward the creature’s eyes. The monster tried to retract its face but it was already too late. Alex had already plunged both hands into the abomination’s eyes.

A deafening guttural roar suddenly tore out of the creature’s throat as its entire body convulsed violently. Its long elongated limbs flailed about, without any control, tearing through the air with raw destructive force. The jagged ground beneath, gave way under it’s aimlessly thrashing.

"Oh Shit!"

Alex couldn’t pull back in time, as the massive arm slammed into his side like a speeding truck. The impact sent him flying into the air. He coughed up a spray of blood mid air before plummeting down. A sharp pain instantly exploded through his body as soon as he made contact with the warm jagged ground.

"Dammit! That’s the third one today."

Alex cursed under his breath while wiping the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. He watched as the enraged monster continued to blindly attack everything in its path. On its revolting face, where the two eyes had once been, had now been replaced with two gaping holes that looked a bit off putting.

"Yes! It really worked. Serves you right. Now this is my only chance to kill it. Just gotta force myself up even if my body technically hurts like hell and hit its chest."

Alex sucked in a sharp breath and pushed himself upright. Every movement sent a dull wave of pain through his body but he gritted his teeth and endured it. This was the opening he had been waiting for. So there was no way in hell that he was going to let a little pain in his body stop him from finishing this.

Meanwhile, the monster stumbled forward blindly, flailing its massive limbs wildly, hoping to crush the pesky human who had just blinded it. But without its eyes, its movements were erratic and unrefined, driven purely by instinct and rage. Though, even like this it was still dangerous for Alex to underestimate it. One wrong step was all it would take for him to die.

"Come on... Do it again for daddy..." Alex muttered, while circling slowly around the raging monster, keeping just enough distance to avoid the sweeping attacks while staying close enough to strike at the golden moment.

The creature let out another distorted howl and raised both arms before slamming them down violently causing a miniature shockwave to travel through the ground. It caused Alex to stagger half a step back, but at that exact moment... The black flesh on its chest had peeled open again.

Without wasting any precious time, Alex lunged forward with all the strength he could muster in that brief expanse of time. In an instant he had already closed the distance and was gathering every ounce of strength he could muster into his right hand. The world around him seemed to narrow as he focused solely on that tiny opening.

’This ends now’

With a roar, he drove his fist forward.

The moment his fist sank into the exposed flesh, he felt a sickening squelching resistance before smashing straight into something solid. Immediately the heart got crushed, the creature suddenly froze and stared blankly at the human who had just dealt it a finishing blow. Even though it couldn’t see, Alex still felt uneasy by the hollow gaze. It felt like it was staring straight into his soul.

He pushed himself off the creature and landed roughly backward, creating space between him and the once fearsome creature. The monster swayed where it stood, then took a step. And another, trying to reach out for Alex. But failed to do so as cracks began to form all over its body. It gave out a low broken groan before its legs finally gave out.

With a thunderous crash, the creature collapsed on the jagged ground, Dead.

Alex watched the unmoving body with shock, he refused to believe that the fearsome monster had died so easily, so he cautiously moved toward the creature’s corpse and nudged it lightly with his foot, but there was no reaction. It was truly dead.

Alex’s knees sunk to the ground as he let out a long ragged laugh.

"I did it. I really did it. After everything I finally killed that son of a bitch. Though not easily, but hey, I still fucking did it."

After the long outburst, he calmed down and began to reflect on the entire fight. During the fight he had mainly been on the defensive, which had vastly improved his reaction time and defense. It looked like fighting in a death battle was really effective. If he had chosen to reject the system’s offer and learned basic martial arts like boxing or something, then.... he might have just gained some superficial skill which won’t be beneficial in a life and death situation.

But there was still something that was bothering him. If one of the minions were this strong then how strong was his cheap copy? It had to be much stronger than the bizarre creature, right?

No matter how strong the bastard was , he would make sure to finish him and complete this training. After all, he still needed to come back to the real world and build his harem.

With a sigh, he reached into his mind, trying to trigger his spatial storage space. And surprisingly it worked. It seems like even though his connection with the system was temporarily cut off, he could still access his storage space. He pulled out a bottle of water and took a long, greedy gulp 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Suddenly a sharp sound came from behind, prompting Alex to quickly be on the defensive.

’Could the bastard be alive? But I freaking killed him, I’m sure of that. Or was he just pretending to be dead?’

Different thoughts raced through his mind as he carefully turned toward the body. Fortunately it was nothing alarming. The cracks on the creature’s body had begun to spread more vividly, before it finally shattered into a wisp of grey smoke that dissolved into the air.

Alex stared at the spot where the creature’s corpse had disappeared and lowered his shoulders.

"So that’s it... The bastard was just fading away. Honestly I don’t know why I thought it was going to come back. It’s clearly dea..."

A low growl suddenly cut him mid speech. Alex’s eyes snapped open and before he could even fully turn...

BOOM!

Something had crashed into the ground where he had just been standing a second ago. It was a good thing that he was able to react in time if not he would have ended up as a flattened pie.

"What the hell was that?!"

He muttered while looking at the source of the attack. When he finally saw what had attacked him, Alex froze.

"You’ve got to be kidding me right now. Another one?! And I haven’t even had a chance to breathe!"

Standing a few meters away was a new creature that looked completely different from the last one. If the previous monster had been lean, then this one was built like a freaking tank. It stood at nearly eight feet tall, with a thick and densely muscled body, wrapped in layers of dark armor like flesh, that looked more like overlapping plates than skin.

Its arms were grotesquely oversized, hanging low enough that the fist dragged against the jagged ground leaving deep grooves on the scorched earth. But what made Alex breath truly hitch was the monster’s face.

Unlike the previous monster, this one had no face, just a vertical maw that stretched from where its forehead should have been down to its chin. Inside was nothing but rows upon rows of serrated uneven teeth, layered so densely it looked like a grinding machine built for tearing flesh and stone.

"Yeah I’m definitely fucked."
