With two roars, Yan’s anger subsided a bit. He flopped onto the sofa and glared at his mother who was playing him for a fool. “Spit it out! What’s your next game, Mother?”
Lady Yan just giggled at him, even when she punched him, she did so with a smile.
When he put the question to her, she didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she leisurely lifted the lid off the teapot, poured in some water, put the lid back on, and tilted the pot to pour the jade-green tea into a teacup.
Yan watched her leisurely complete the series of actions, and before she could move further, he picked up the teacup and served his father and mother each a cup of tea. Only then did he pour one for himself, lifted the cup, and drained the tea in one gulp.
“So, spill it!”
Since he took over both the Yan and the Tong families businesses at eighteen, he has always maintained unflappable composure in public. The only time he showed such irritability was probably in front of Lady Yan.
Lady Yan took a fancy teacup gently in one hand, sipped the tea lightly, and then glanced at him with a radiant smile, “So, you can banish someone’s son abroad, but you won’t let me play around with you?”
Yan’s eyes narrowed threateningly.
“Did Tong Deming complain to you?”
Yan gritted his teeth in secret. Initially, he had no intentions of involving his mother in this matter. She had retired many years ago and he preferred to let her and his father enjoy their twilight years without a care in the world. As for those trivial matters related to the Tong family, he was more than capable of handling them on his own.
However, he never anticipated that Tong Deming, a man devotedly loyal to his mother, would turn disloyal.
Lady Yan put down her teacup, the smile vanished from her face.
“My son, Ming is my cousin as well as your uncle. What Feng did was undeniably improper, but he never tried to defend Feng’s actions. He has no objections to your decision of banishing Feng abroad, neither do I. However, you must understand his plight as a father. By prohibiting your uncle from going abroad, he just wanted to see his son and had to resort to illegal ways to leave the country. Do you think that’s fair?”
Yan got the gist of the entire matter. “Uncle got arrested abroad?”
Lady Yan took a glance at him and nodded, “Yes, he made a distress call to me. Of course, I couldn’t ignore it. It was nothing serious. Just buying a ticket would have allowed him to see Feng. But due to your meddling, he got detained in another country for two days. Out of desperation, he had to call me for help.”
Yan couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation, “Mom! You can’t be doing this, you know! Do you even realize that you nearly scared me to death!”
For influential families like the Yan and Tong families, security was of the utmost importance. Any minor misstep could spell major disaster.
So, when Yan found out that his parents had not boarded the plane, he had conjured up multiple scenarios in his mind, both good and bad.
Lady Yan waited until her lesson had sunk in before adding, “At that time, I wasn’t thinking much. As soon as I received your uncle’s call at the airport, I immediately arranged for help. By the time we managed to release him, it was very late and we wouldn’t have made it back in time to L City. So, we ended up spending the night here.”
What could Yan say? What could he do with such a mother? He couldn’t reproach her nor could he coax her…
Ultimately, she had just wanted to make him feel anxious for a while to let him understand the desperation Tong Deming felt when he tried all means to visit his son.
Yan was furious in his heart, but there was nothing he could do to his own mother. After considering for a moment, he suddenly stood up, turned around in silence with a gloomy face, and left the room.
“Son, where’s my daughter-in-law?”
Well, she sure remembered this!
“She ran away!” Yan tossed out the words curtly, swung the door open and stepped out, slamming it shut behind him.
Subsequently, Yan traveled back to L City overnight. Uncle Hai, who was roused and waiting in the hall, was surprised to see him enter alone and craned his neck to look behind him, “Where are Master and Madam?”
“I don’t know!”
Yan brushed past him coldly, started climbing the stairs, but halted midway. He turned towards Uncle Hai who was about to make a call in the hall.
“Get something to eat.”
He had rushed from L City to H City early in the morning. As soon as he arrived, he was busy digging for information and tracking down leads. When he finally found his parents safe and sound, the weight in his heart was lifted. But his appetite had been completely killed because of his mother. By this time, his stomach hadn’t received any food for more than ten hours.
Uncle Hai acknowledged his request and was about to head towards the kitchen, when he suddenly had a thought. He turned around and told the retreating Yan, “Young Master, Miss Fifth sent some snacks over in the evening. Would you like to try some?”
The Miss Fifth Uncle Hai referred to was Zhu Qianying.
Yan paused for a moment on the stairs, holding onto the railing, “Sure.” Then, he continued his stride and walked upstairs.
As Yan was likely to be hungry, Uncle Hai had the chef heat up the snacks that Zhu Qianying sent over in the microwave first. A few minutes later, he brought a tray with several dishes of exquisite Chinese snacks and a pot of freshly brewed tea to Yan’s study room.
Yan’s study room came with a bathroom. Sometimes when he felt worn out, he would take a shower inside to refresh himself.
When Uncle Hai brought up the snacks, Yan was not in the study room. However, he could faintly hear the sound of running water from inside the bathroom.
Uncle Hai knew he wouldn’t take long. So he placed the snacks there and left.
After showering, Yan came out draped in a bathrobe.
On the coffee table was a cup of steaming hot tea and several dishes of beautifully prepared Chinese snacks.
Yan was notoriously difficult to please.
This difficulty extended to his picky eating habits.
While most of the young people nowadays preferred Western snacks, Yan found them overly sweet and had a preference for Chinese snacks instead.
Even so, he didn’t have much expectations for the snacks on the coffee table.
After all, there weren’t many who could please his fastidious palate.

But hunger drove him to take a piece of taro spring roll. He took a bite and chewed slowly. The spring roll was fragrant, crispy, sweet but not greasy, and had an excellent texture.
He knew that Zhu Qianying’s mother used to be the chef for the Zhu family. However, he was surprised by the culinary skills of Zhu Qianying’s mother. It was no wonder she managed to win Zhu Zhizhou’s heart and stomach.
But he was misunderstanding.
Those snacks were not made by Chen Jing, but by Zhu Qianying herself.
After she finished talking to Zhu Qianyu on the phone, she planned to work. But she couldn’t find inspiration after sitting in front of the computer for a while. So she got up and went to the kitchen to make some snacks, while searching for inspiration.
It was odd. She despised her mother for always cooking for her father late into the night, yet she herself would always turn to cooking when she lacked inspiration.
After she made a pile of snacks, she didn’t know what to do with them. She couldn’t possibly eat them all.
In the end, she had an idea. She packed the snacks into a box and had her driver deliver them to the Yan family.
Consider it as a return gift for devouring half of Yan’s breakfast and taking two of his mobile phones!
