Chapter 225: Unreasonable

The second day of the blessing ceremony passed rather quickly without the chaos that occurred on the first day.

Esme could feel the attention she had attracted to herself.

Amongst the five main gods, Atlas and Zephyr were the only gods who possessed divine powers.

It has been decades since Zephyr was banished from the heaven hence someone representing him after a such long time was something that made heads turn.

Not to mention the prowess of the trident. All the people here were familiar with each other’s powers in one way or another but the powers of their god remained a mystery.

The water god was different after they turned him into a mer hence nobody knew what the trident was capable of.

As uncomfortable as she felt, Esme knew that she could do nothing but accept the attention.

However, there was something else that bothered her.

Throughout her time in the night court, she felt like someone was watching her.

It was not the kind of attention she was getting from other people. Not the gauging eyes of God Atlas which seemed to be measuring her from head to toe.

Not the shameless Prince Aleister who kept staring at her blatantly in a court full of people.

She felt like someone was watching her every move and whenever she tried to find that person, she did not see anyone suspicious.

It was unsettling to some extent.

After the blessings were over, Esme and Luciana walked out of the night court.

"I don’t know how they live here everyday...’’ Luciana mumbled under her breath, ’’There is no day, no sun, and no sunshine. I will go mad if I don’t flip in the water under the sun everyday.’’

Esme laughed, ’’Why don’t you tell your Prince to do something about it? Maybe he can leave this realm and come to our land for you to give you company with your sunbathing tendencies.’’

’’He is not mine,’’ Luciana’s nose scrunched up, ’’And I told you he has ulterior motives for you. Why are you not wary of him? You did not even confront me about Cardan.’’

Esme looked at their surroundings. Four of the maids were escorting them back to their room, ’’You can go back,’’ she said to them.

’’But...’’ As one of the maids started speaking, Esme shook her head.

’’We know the way,’’ Esme held the trident closer to her body.

The maids bowed and left.

Esme’s shoulders relaxed. She did not know why she was not fond of people following her and tending to her needs or serving her.

But then again, there were many things she disliked without knowing the reason or cause behind it. Like Prince Aleister.

She sighed.

Luciana leaned closer to her with narrowed eyes, ’’You have yet to answer my questions.’’

With a slight lift of her shoulder, Esme shook her head, ’’If we started getting angry for every lie you have fed me, or every secret we kept from each other then one of us would end up in the grave.’’

Luciana cleared her throat.

’’I know why you did what you did. And I know you mean well, Lucy. That’s all that matters to me,’’ Esme smiled slightly, ’’As for Cardan... I don’t even know how a cautious person like me got entangled with so many people in the past for them to hold a grudge against me...’’ As she thought about Aleister, her lips twitched, ’’But I feel like I attract troubles towards myself. I can’t go and ask Cardan what he wants from me as I doubt he would sit and explain. Moreover, I feel like it’s not me he wants something from. But if there is anything like that, all I can do is fight the battles as they come.’’

Luciana laughed, ’’You talk like you want to kill people.’’

’’Why are you shocked?" Esme tilted her head to the side, ’’There is someone I indeed want to kill.’’

’’Hmm?" Luciana blinked.

Esme turned around.

Luciana followed the woman’s gaze only to find Cardan and Aleister striding towards them.

She was speechless.

’’I am going back to the room,’’ Esme quickly said.

’’I am going with you...’’

Just as both the women turned around, Cardan’s voice rang from behind, ’’You gave me your word about having tea with me.’’

Luciana halted in her tracks, holding Esme’s hand to stop her as well. She needed moral support in a situation as unreasonable as this.

Luciana turned to glance at Cardan, ’’I did not give you my word for tea.’’

’’Oh? Did we settle on wine then?" Cardan blinked.

Luciana sighed, ’’I don’t want to have anything with you.’’

’’That hurt,’’ Cardan placed a hand on his chest, closing his eyes like a pet that was abandoned by his master.

Esme glared at Luciana without turning around. The woman was holding her hand in a tight grip and she could feel a burning gaze on the back of her head.

She did not have to turn around to know that it was Prince Aleister.

Luciana was persistent, ’’If you are done...’’

’’You are leaving tomorrow. We might not see each other again. Won’t you spare me a few minutes now so that we can reminisce about our time together?" A playful smile was etched on Cardan’s face.

Before Luciana could turn him down again, Esme spoke up, ’’Go. Who knows if you will ever see him again?"

Luciana frowned. Reminisce? What would she reminisce about with him? How he manipulated and cornered her for his motives all the time?

But she hesitated. Since he did not look like he meant any harm, it should be fine.

Not that she cared about whether she got to see him again or not.

She could do him the favour by gracing him some of her precious time.

’’I don’t want to go to your room,’’ Luciana released Esme’s hand and walked past Cardan.

Cardan’s eyes sparkled as he followed after her, ’’Where do you want to go then?"

’’That dark lake.’’

’’Why there?"

"I heard you fell into it when you were young,’’ Luciana glanced at him sideways.

’’So...?"

’’I think I would like to imagine your tortured face there,’’ she smirked.

’’If that’s what makes you happy,’’ he shrugged.

The smirk was wiped off her face. She wanted to see him angry and frustrated. What was up with his cocky smile?
